Review: Thank you Mr. Barker! When I first saw this movie I was surprised because it wasn't the typical cheese bag tacky horror movie. It was different from the regular "scream machine" it wasn't predictable & it wasn't campy. I have seen all four in the series & this one is still at the top. Only this & Candyman are the two that scare me. Three little words "Time to Play". It's a movie I won't soon forget!

Summary: Once you see this you'll never forget it
Review: This is the type of film that has images you'll still remember 10 years from now; but that's a good thing. There has nver been anything quite like "Hellraiser", though many have tried. The story is descent but of little importance, since most people will only want to see the gore. And what gore it is. The rebirth of a rather unlucky fellow is a stunning achievement, as is the creativity and direction, all courtesy of Clive Barker. Followed by a superb sequel, Hellraiser II, also a must see.

Review: The mid to late 80's spawned hundreds of horror movies of which Hellraiser stands head and shoulders above the competition. Combining stylish, nightmarish imagery with a plot straight from the fetid imagination of English writer Clive Barker it succeeds where so many failed and is a genuine edge-of-the-seat watch. The introduction of the wholely evil Cenobites, led by the charismatic and ruthlessly sadistic Pinhead, was to shape many an imagination and even today the image of a white-faced bald-headed guy whose head is full of builder's nails embodies the best(worst?) of on-screen horror. This original movie was to prove the basis for a further three spin-offs but none managed to capture the almost tangible sense of real fear that the original movie did so well. Don't miss it, and if you ever find a gilt-covered puzzle box, for heaven's sake don't mess with it! END

Summary: My favourite horror movie
Review: Clive Barker's Hellraiser showed that he was an accomplished director as well as an excellent writer. Hellraiser is a very influential film and it is sure to give you nightmares. The special effects are not mind boggling by todays standards, but that is okay since it's the atmosphere and the acting that makes this movie what it is. The sequels were unfortunately not as good, but Hellraiser 4 is worth an afternoon. It is more gory and special effects driven, but you can still see Clive Barker's genius shining through. Also worth your time is Candyman 1 (almost as good as Hellraiser) and Lord of Illusions (some slow moments, but if you liked the book The Great and Secret Show you will enjoy seeing some ideas from it used). Summary: A classic of the genre.
Review: In 1986, Clive Barker wrote a novella called "The Hellbound Heart" which was and by all means still is a brilliant example that in a space of roundabout 160 pages a skilled horrormaster like Barker can convey horror and suspense enough to shock and scare the reader. Barker is the same one who says that there are no new stories, only new ways to tell. It is a refreshingly original story rich in gruesome details. Then, in 1987, Barker himself got the opportunity to adapt his novel to the screen. This film immortalized the legendary villain called Pinhead, played by Doug Bradley. The film is just as gruesome as the book if not more. I'd say that I had no doubt the film would be faithful to the novel because after all it was the novel's writer who was directing the movie in the first place! I just rewatched Hellraiser last night and I reread the book today. It's short enough to be read in one sitting...and compelling enough, too! To me this film is a contemporary masterpiece of the genre. It's not only an excuse to show flayed, skinned glistening on screen, no. Unlike what others say, there is a story here too, and to me at least, it's a very original one. Andrew Robinson, Claire Higgins and Ashley Laurence give very good performances to back up this film...but the real heros behind it are director/writer Clive Barker and the special effects creator, Bob Keene. The scene with Frank's reanimation has got to be one of the grossest and most stunning effects I've ever seen. And also, considering this film only cost one million dollars to do, I think that that price was a bargain. Congratulations to all!
