Summary: Don't bother!
Review: While this movie looked somewhat promising from the trailers, only the opening sequence is truly gruesome and scary. The movie falls flat, subjecting the audience to one horror cliche after another. For a classier, more original thriller, rent "The Ring" instead.

Summary: Really not that bad
Review: I saw this one at the two dollar theatre. I must say, it was better than I expected. Yes, there are some unbelievable things about the movie, but what horror movie doesn't have those? The pace slows towards the middle of the movie a bit, the dialogue leaves a little to be desired, and some things are predictable. BUT, this movie will be worth the watch for a few reasons. First off, the opening sequence is just awesome. Without giving too much away, it switches from the surreal and beautiful to the grisly and horrific. Then towards the end of the movie you get a flashback scene that is breathtaking in presentation and story. Gabriel Byrne does a nice job with his character, coming off as both creepy but likeable at the same time(ala Christopher Walken in most of his roles). The plot has a few twists and turns, nothing too terrific or unexpected, but enough to seperate it from many horror movies that stick to the exact same model. The end is decent, again breaking what we are used to with horror movies, and oh yeah, leaving space for a sequel. All in all I liked the movie, will buy it on VHS, and recommend any reader of this to do the same.

Summary: Average with the last horror movies
Review: "Ghost ship" is your average last-decade horror movie. There are many movies with plots similar to this one, just varying the environment (but in all movies it is an enclosed location - this time it was an oceanliner) and the kind of horrible thing that haunts the characters. Just as an example, "Ghost ship" is very similar to two recent movies of the same kind: "Hause on haunted hill" and "Deep blue sea". Even the proportions of the ethnic origin of the actors are the same in these movies.

"Ghost ship" 's plot is: a group of ship rescuers (they won't do anything if there's not any money involved, of course) lead by Gabriel Byrne is approached by a young man who claims to have seen from the air an abandoned oceanliner. When they get there, Byrne discovers it is the "Antonio Grazi", a ship that was reported missing since 1962. That's when the team discovers a hidden treasure and strange things begin to happen. OK, everybody knew what the plot was.

So let me say other things about the film: the first scenes are very well-though and well-made and, like other reviewers, I thought I was in the wrong movie. The first mass-killing scenes are also good. The story is full of flaws and some highly-unbelieving death scenes. The prodution of the movie is competent and Steve Beck is a regular director, but knows how to keep the audience paying attention to the screen without laughing too much. Following a recent fashion in horror movies, an important character dies; the ending tries to be clever and innovative, but in fact it was not so different from what I was expecting.

So, "Ghost ship" is nothing the average viewer hasn't seen a hundred times. There are some cool visual effects, etc. etc. Go watch it if you have 1 1/2 hours to spare.

Grade 6.7/10

Summary: Ghost Ship
Review: In the mood for shlocky horror? Well, all aboard GHOST SHIP, where the screams are few and the plot is nowhere to be seen! Hack director Steve Beck (13 GHOSTS) helmed this plodding thriller, which, while it has it's moments, is still very underwhelming and worst of all, not very scary. This is one of those movies which works on a better level if you take it as the sum of its parts rather than the film as a whole. Stars Gabriel Byrne and Julianna Margulies manage not to get lost amidst the barrage of "Boo!" scares and overly-gruesome killings. One facet of the film that hits the mark is the downright creepy score which adds a lot to the mood. For most thrillers (See PSYCHO, JAWS, HALLOWEEN) the music is like another character, and in this case, the thundering tunes fit perfectly. Beck uses some neat camera techniques and there are some undeniably eerie scenes, but the whole trip gets predictable as the movie progresses. Ok, so the scene where the woman gets garroted is very horrific and off-putting, and the cinematography gives a whole new meaning to the term "Audience involvement". This is 5 star film for style, but a 3 star film for thrills. Where 13 Ghosts had superficial yet effective shocks, this one fails to reach such audience terror. Still, considering this is a film about ghosts, its understandably hollow.

Summary: It's okay, but it isn't as bad as some are saying...
Review: This is a 3 star horror movie that isn't that scary, but is severly underated. Yes it ripsoff better and scarier movies, but it was alot better than Fear Dot Com, Swimfan, Abandon, and They. This is one I'd recommend you seeing. It's got gore, lots of laughs (most of them are unintentional) and maybe a few scares, but nothing that will mess you up, so that makes this a perfect party movie that you sit back and watch with your buds and laugh at it. Highly recomennded. I actually really enjoyed this movie. It's gory, it's got alot of action, and it's fast paced, so die-hard horror fans need to see this. I would buy it.

Summary: Good movie
Review: I really enjoyed "Ghost Ship". The beginning scene was gruesome and entertaining. Although it wasn't as good as "Thir13en Ghosts", it was still pretty good.

Summary: Flawed but Well Made Supernatural Thriller.
Review: In 1962, When a Mystery Man and Others did murder all the Passengers and Crew on a large Boat Ship. Then 40 years later... a strangely grim young Airplane Pilot (Desmond Harrington) find the Ship has been missing for 40 years. The young man recruits a cocky Salvage Crew (Julianna Margulies, Ron Eldard, Gabriel Byrne, Karl Urban, Isaish Washington & Alex Dimitraides) to examine the Mystery Ship that turns out to be the Cadaver of an Italian Ocean Liner and there's a mysterious bloodthristy "soul collector" wanting for them.

Directed by Steve Beck (13 Ghosts-Remake) made a entertaining, eerie, sometimes scary Ghost Horror film. Beck manages to pull off, Good Performances from the Cast, including:Emily Browning as Katie. This has some terrific Visual Effects and a good music score by John Frizzell. Although the film is flawed, because, director:Beck never knows, what his film to be & it's never recaptures the early pizzazz of the Prologue and at times, it seems Beck doesn't know how Good or Evil or Dreamy or Nightmarish, he wants his own version of Tales of the Crypt Vessel to be but Beck does a better job with his Second film. It's worth seeing. DVD has an sharp anamorphic Widescreen (1.85:1) transfer and an great-Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. DVD Extras are:Behind the Scenes featurettes, Hidden Features, Music Video and More. Produced by Joel Silver (The Matrix Trilogy), Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump) & Gilbert Alder (Bordello of Blood). From a Story by Mark Hanlon & the Written Screenplay is by Hanlon & John Pogue (U.S. Marshals, The Skulls, Tears of the Sun). Grade:A-.

Review: standard haunted house tale transplanted to the high seas.
"Ghost Ship" is a standard haunted house tale transplanted to the high seas.

The cast features such talented people as Julianna Marguiles, Ron Eldard and Gabriel Byrne.

As in "The Ring," though, director Steve Beckand cinematographer Gale Tattersall do a wonderful job making the atmosphere far more haunting than the story.
Beck also kick starts the plot with an unforgettable jolt.

One evening 40 years ago aboard the Italian luxury liner Antonia Graza, most of the passengers and crew gather for elegant fun on the dance floor. A deck away a hand trips a switch, and a high-tension wire reels onto its spool. A hinge snaps and the wire whips across the ballroom floor, slicing everyone in two except a young girl short enough to survive.

It doesn't even come close to capturing the power and intensity of The Ring, but it is a whole lot better than Fear Dot Com.

Not a complete waste of time, especially if you're new to horror, but for the die-hard horror fanatics, look somewhere else to be thrilled.

Summary: Kinda dull but has a few sparks
Review: I was eagerly awaiting the theatrical release of this movie, just because I had enjoyed Dark Castles's earlier two movies, House On Haunted Hill & 13 Ghosts. So I was pretty disapointed with this third one. But first with the good stuff.
1)I have never liked nor disliked Julianna Margulies, and not being an E.R. fan wasn't drawn to this movie because of her. But it turns out she is the shining light in this pretty drab voyage. She brings a nice piece of humanity to the rather dull role of Maureen and makes the whole thing watchable.
2) The production values. Some nice effects are on offer as usual with this production company and the digital effects aren't over the top or especially obvious. Nothing ever looks studio bound and the rust and ageing procedure to the ship is handled well. Also of note is the reversal of the ballroom from rust trap to it's former slender - also very well handled.
3) The opening massacre - pretty much the only real gore in the movie and pretty cool! A bit CGI-ish though in places, but a nicely directed set piece. Shame there isn't more like it. I also liked the "romantic" credits - throws you off nicely and it's different.
4) Little Ghost Girl Katie's trip back to explain what happened. Fast paced, energetic and quite harrowing in places.
5) The ending, Katie helping Maureen find her way. Again quite touching and nicely shot. Hints of James Cameron here. Made me think that with a slightly different play on the script this could of been a lot better and could of given the director a few more choices as it's obvious he has talent.
6) No bad acting!
And now for the bad stuff:
1) It's about as scary as Mary Poppins cuddling some kitties. And it's not even especially creepy or tense - at all.
2) You don't care about any of the characters other than Maureen & Katie. I know this is pretty common for this genre but it can be done and it wonders why such talent as Gabriel Byrne, Ron Eldard and Isaiah Washington sighned up to play such lame roles. A lot of talent was wasted here.
3) Kinda dull and unoriginal in general, for this type of movie.
Overall I will say I enjoyed it but i really was expecting more, which of course doesn't help. I had hoped it would of been darker and with a few more gore effects. Kinda reminded me of the 'Rose Red' mini series which was all sleek and no substance like this. But you know, after all my ramblings just see it for yourself as you may love it, we all like different things for different reasons.
