Summary: Great Scary Movie
Review: I really liked this movie. It had all the elements that I enjoy in the horror genre. This has ghosts, the devil, a great abandoned ship with treasures aboard. I particularly enjoyed the beginning scenes where we find out what happened to the original passengers. The scene where the cable snaps was wonderfully done. I also enjoyed the flash-back scene where the main ghost shows Julianna M's character what has occured on the ship and who the big, bad devil person is behind everything. Another thing I enjoyed about this movie is that it showed that people can be self-sacrificing and not just out for a buck; that money is not more important that helping others and saving your own soul.
I saw this at the theatre and again rented it and watched it three more times. Dark Castle should be proud of this one. It is as good as House on Haunted Hill was. I hope they keep up the good work. Basically, give this a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Summary: The Love Boat this isn't!
Review: Any movie that can make you slide to the edge of your seat and cover your eyes in the first 5 minutes is going to be a good one, guaranteed! This movie is one of the best horror films that I have seen come out in a long time. The special effects are top notch, the acting is incredible, and the plot is good. I wanted to see this movie in the theatre, but just never got around to it. I bought it the day it came out and watched it as soon as I got home. I swear, I had to get up and turn the lights back on to watch it. One of the best things about this movie is that everything comes full circle. There are no loose ends just lying around. On the predictabiliy scale, this movie doesn't even rank. You never know what is lurking around the corner or sitting in the next cabin. The sets in this movie are among the best and rank right in there with the sets from The Haunting and Titanic. This is a movie I will definitely watch over and over and keep enjoying for a long time to come.

Summary: This ship starts sinking right after the ...opening
Review: Steve Beck started off as a Special Effects Art Director for Industrial Light and Magic on "Indiana Jones and the Lost Crusade," "The Abyss," and "The Hunt for Red October." That explains why the strength of Beck's first two films as a director, "Thir13en Ghosts" and "Ghost Ship" have been triumphs of set design. Unfortunately, with this 2002 horror film once again the set design overwhelms the story and characters.

Julianna Margulies, who stars in "Ghost Ships" as Epps, has described the film as "The Shining" meets "Dead Calm," and it is certainly impossible not to watch this film and find echoes of previous horror films that you have seen since we are talking about a haunted house movie set on an ocean liner (which reminds me of "Alien" more than anything else). What else is there to inject new blood into this horror genre besides new locations for recycled stories?

Actually Mark Hanlon and John Pogue do try to come up with something different. The opening sequence of the film is one of the grossest you have ever seen and I can guarantee you that it terms of the mystery it presents the audience you will never see the solution coming. Unfortunately, that solution ends up being rather over the top (when you come up with something too far fetched for a horror film you know that you are going to have problems). More importantly, ... which is the more unforgivable sin in this genre.

Forty years after the blood bath of the opening sequence the titular vessel is discovered by a salvage crew in the Bering Sea. This is a very odd place for a trans-Atlantic Italian ocean liner to end up, but this does not bother Murphy (Gabriel Byrne) or his crew, who are too consumed by the dollar signs dancing in their heads to worry about things like the fact that the rusted ship keeps doing the now you see it, now you don't routine on their radar. Once aboard Epps, the character who has the virtue of having more brains and guts than the rest of the crew combined, encounters the ghost of little girl Katie (Emily Browning), who keeps suggesting the visitors want to get off the ship right now. Of course, if they did that there would be no film and all this great set design work would be for naught.

"Ghost Ship" is another in a long series of disappointing big budget horror films that have been foisted off on us in the past several years. Apparently the lesson of "The Blair Witch Project," which had no special effects to speak of but still managed to be scary for a whole lot of people, is lost on Hollywood. The explanation for the "Ghost Ship" is quite convoluted and even taken at face value a rather inefficient way of accomplishing such a task. The true face of evil is usually not that stupid.

Summary: Maybe for Halloween ...
Review: The scares are too few, too far between, and too often retreads.

That said, there are a few good long creepy segments. I think this could be a fun rental for a Halloween party or the like.

Summary: This ship package works!
Review: Gabriel Byrne and Julianna Margulies have the two central roles that make this movie work so well. A female on a Salvage Crew is my type of non petite, assertive woman. This is done here in a manner to not simply imitate a masculine perspective. Movies deserve more of a gender balance in lead characters. I rented the movie and read the back of the package when I got home. Haunted House and 13 Ghosts were comic book stories with a special effects make over. I was angry at myself for not reading this before renting the movie, as I was not impressed at all with these brainless special effects gore fests. I was pleasantly surprised that Ghost Ship does indeed represent real story telling. At the end, I thought the total package of Ghost Ship worked in the most basic terms of entertainment. However, I will have to admit that I am not sure I am comfortable in seeing child actresses used in horror movies since the death of the Poltergeist child actress under unusual circumstances. It is an impressionable age, and these are images that remain with you for a very long time. The end of the movie leaves the door wide open for a sequel. For a change, this may be a horror movie deserving a sequel if done in this more intelligent than comic book style.

Summary: Shipwreck
Review: Unfortunately this film never lives up to it's over the top but rather cool introduction scene.
Produced by the same people who did House on Haunted Hill and 13 Ghosts it continues in the same style but never reaches the creepiness and makes both these films look far superior.
Tediously predictable, the plot and scripting are aweful and Gabriel Byrne's wooden seafaring acting is testing. Sure, these films succeed in their ability to scare through special effects but it also falls short in this respect too.
It seesm to end too abruptly. Just as you think it's about to come to life, it winds down...possibly a blessing though.
Avoid.

Summary: Wow!
Review: Hey, it may not be the greatest scary movie, with all the great special effects, but i loved it! The story was great and it would make a great book. I'm not going to tell you what happens but the end was the best part. It wasn't as scary as i thought it would be but it is a movie that tells a story, and isn't so much a jump-out-of-your-seat-thriller because i think it isn't sopposed to be! I recomend watching it. If you hate it, you hate it. If you like it, you like it. :)

Summary: Seen this movie before
Review: I've seen this movie before - it was called Event Horizon. And that was not too good either.
If you draw out the plot and character lines via pencil and graph you see that the lines for both movies are identical. The beginning is still too disturbing to recall but does not really serve the story. And the later scenes of the massacre on board, in light of world events, is unfortunate.

Summary: Above Average for this Beat'n, Bloodied Genre....
Review: So, we have Ghost Ship. Cheesy title. Typical Trailer. Released during Halloween. It feels like a movie you would take your 15 year old girlfriend to see (if you're that age). So you figure its going to be relatively stupid. Perhaps like scream, or Child's Play.

I'm not saying this movie is perfect--But this is not your usual experience with horror. So, before I tell you why, here are a few things that brought Ghost Ship down.

Number one: Gore is good, but you have to do it the right way. The beginning scene in Ghost Ship, for the most part, does what I would call a "tasteful" presentation of this tactic, but there are about 3 or 4 camera shots that do not belong. After the "disaster" we get the point. I don't need to see what looks like a rubber doll, in the center of the screen, flop about and fall over. It just takes away from the believabilty. Give me gore, but not too much. As they say, too much of anything, even blood and guts, can be bad. Show me dripping blood, side angles, far away angles--but don't get close up and stay there forever. Ah, Just watch. You'll see my point.

So Next: While the beginning and the end of this movie seem to be strongly connected, the middle gets muddy. Aside from a few scenes (such as when our heroine goes in the pool) you just sort of sit back and think: Now what are they doing? Do they have a plan? Or are they just aimlessly looking for spooky things in here? Its like a meal. Good beginning, awesome ending, but the middle just needs more seasoning.

Those are my two MAJOR gripes. But here's the good stuff: The opening credits are even worth noticing here. The movie opens up to a classly longue song, with pink lettering. It's almost as if you're watching the "loveboat" movie for the first minute and a half. Then everything changes--a quick incident occurs--and everybody dies. Well, almost everybody. The camera work is done well here, too (aside from my earlier complaints).

Here's a compliment that is rare of Horror Movies: This one, my friends, has good acting. Yes, thats right. Good Acting. I think we owe the screen writers a bit of credit on this note, though. Each character has his/her own qualities, weaknesses, and so forth. You know who is gonna get it, and why. Its not like watching 10 stupid teenagers chase after a guy in a white mask. The Villian, when introduced, is truly an amazing character. Ah, just watch. You'll see what I mean.

Don't forget about this set. Its detailed. Its dark, and full of lovely little nooks and crannies. It shoots into the past, then to the present, and simply, it looks real. I believed that this boat existed.

What about the Horror? Well, aside from the gore, much it is very subtle. For example, a woman will see a glimpse of a little girl, a crew member will talk to a dead captain as if nothing is wrong. Reflections in mirrors come back differenly. Children's puzzles turn by themselves. Characters find cigarettes in ashtrays, still burning. Ghosts sit and smoke on tables--in the sight of the audience, but not the character. Dead, vacant rooms turn into live, active parties. Its sort of like "The Shining" in many respects.

The best part about this one, though, is the way it ends. I won't give it away, but its a bit more than a simple twist.

In the beginning, you see all the people die. And you think you know "whats up."

But you really don't. This is where you get a scene, about 3-4 minutes in length, that is without a doubt, one of the most unique, original--and heartstopping scenes in all of Horror. I won't say what it is. You outta know what it is when you get to it.

Whatever you do, give this movie a shot. Its not an Oscar Winner, but it is fresh. It is worth a look, and it may not completely terrify you, but it should shake you. Should jostle you just a bit. And the very end, as you will see, in a way, will take you back to the very beginning in a nice, full-circle close. Bon Voyage!
