Summary: A "Perfect" Horror Film for the MTV Crowd...
Review: Imagine this: you're a member of an elite salvage crew that works in the Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia. One evening you and your crewmates are celebrating your most recent successful salvage operation in a bar in Alaska. Suddenly, you're interrupted by a "mysterious stranger" who claims he's a pilot who's found a huge, derelict ocean liner in the Strait. He says that the US Navy and Coast Guard isn't interested in the ship because it's in international waters, which means it's open for someone to claim salvage rights. So, without asking any questions (such as: what is a huge abandoned ocean liner doing in the Bering Strait, why wouldn't the Coast Guard be interested in such a ship, the credentials of the mysterious stranger, etc.) you'd agree to immediately sail out to the ship, right? If you said "yes", then you'll probably love this film. If, however, you enjoy classic horror films such as "Halloween", "The Others", or even the original "Dracula", or "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", then you should avoid taking a ride on the "Ghost Ship". This film lacks all of the elements of a good horror movie: plot, suspense, chills, a creepy atmosphere, and logic; and it has all the elements of most modern horror films: lots of special effects, blood and gore, and MTV-style music and filming techniques. The plot (such as it is) goes like this: in 1962 a luxurious Italian passenger ship, the "Antonia Graza" is serenely sailing the Atlantic. In a single night, however, everyone on board, save one, is killed (usually in the most painful, gruesome, and bloody way possible). Of course, the ship then vanishes without a trace. Forty years later the ship suddenly reappears over 5,000 miles away in the Bering Strait. The salvage team literally collides with the ship on a stereotypical "dark and stormy night" (and there's loads of stereotypes and cliches in this film). The salvage team boards the ship, and naturally things soon go terribly wrong: they begin to see the ghosts of the dead crew and passengers; their salvage tug explodes, trapping them on the ship; and then the salvage team begins to die horrible deaths, just as happened in 1962. Eventually only one member (Julianna Marguiles, as the team's tender-but-tough "mother hen"), is left to confront the villain who started the killing back in 1962. The paint-by-numbers plot allows you to figure out what's going to happen long before the hapless salvagers do, and the ending is so convoluted that it resembles "Titanic" meets "Ghost" meets "The Exorcist". Particularly absurd is the five-minute "flashback" scene near the end in which we see what happened to the "Antonia Graza" on that fateful night in 1962. The scene is shot to resemble a MTV music video, complete with the soundtrack. I almost expected to see the "Smashing Pumpkins" or "Dave Matthews Band" in a cameo, singing away while everyone is being slaughtered. The only scary thing about this movie is that some top-notch actors (such as Marguiles and Gabriel Byrne) agreed to appear in this mess. Bottom line: if you like lots o' blood and gore, special effects, cardboard characters, and no plot, then you'll like this movie. But if you like classic horror films, then don't get aboard the "Ghost Ship".

Summary: Ghost Ship is the best movie ever.
Review: It was full of cliffhangers. You would think that at frist Greer would die when he died second. The ending was a big twist cause I thought that would not happen.

Summary: Downhill Horror Flick
Review: As if Dark Castle Entertainment didn't learn its lesson yet, GHOST SHIP is by far the worst film to date to be released by the company. They also produced the remakes of HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL and THIRTEEN GHOSTS. Both were equally terrible films in their own right, but GHOST SHIP takes the cake. If those two films were bad, GHOST SHIP achieves a new level of awfulness. All I kept thinking while watching this film was how notable actors like Gabriel Byrne, Juliana Marguilles, and Isaiah Washington would degrade themselves in such a stupid movie? The paycheck must've been tempting. This movie does everything a horror movie should NOT do - it's slow, dull, boring, not scary, not interesting, and (worst of all) extremely predictable.

Only the first 5 minutes of the movie are any good, as it shows us what happened to the crew of the Italian cruise ship The Antonia Graza in 1962. The opening credits toy with us, starting off like some happy episode of "The Love Boat," before the real terror (or lack thereof) starts. A cable line snaps off and slices every single member and vacationer on board. There's a brief pause and slowly every person begins to break in half or lose a head or lose an arm. The little girl is the only one to survive. It's not scary, but this very gory sequence achieve a creepy disturbance that the rest of the movie doesn't have.

The remaining 80 minutes or so of the movie are so deathly dull that I just wanted this thing to be over. We know what's coming so sitting through this movie is pretty pointless. Also, the so-called "surprise" twist at the end is too phony. I mean, come on, I guessed right off the bat who the person was doing this. You have to be blind not to have figured it out. And not only that, the revelation that is shown about what really happened to the crew is not only uproraringly funny, but downright ridiculous.

GHOST SHIP is just a waste of time. The special features on the DVD are OK, but it will just anger you even more considering how the filmmakers still managed to screw everything up. Check out the original HALLOWEEN or the original A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET to see how horror is really done. I don't think anyone will rememeber GHOST SHIP once you've left it alone - at the bottom of your DVD collection.

Summary: not scary in the least...
Review: This movie had a good plot and some impressive special effects, but isn't a horror movie supposed to be scary? I'm telling you right now, I haven't seen many horror movies and I scare very easily, but neither this or its predecessor, "13 ghosts", scared me very much. while the images on the screen were sometimes scary, there was no underlying creepiness or sense of foreboding that movies like "the ring" and "the sixth sense" had in droves. those movies had a minimum of blood and very little violence, and yet they still managed to scare me senseless and disturb me on a psychological level. i think that movie makers are confusing gore and violence with fear, but unfortunately they are two very, very different things.

Summary: JUST WISHING THIS SHIP WOULD DISAPPEAR
Review: "Ghost Ship" is a story idea fraught with possibilities that never quite comes off. At 91 minutes, the film is too short and not scary enough, while some of the scenes contained herein border on tasteless gore.
PLOT: In a nutshell, a salvage group in present day gets duped into going after an ocean liner that disappeared in 1960. No, the ship didn't sink. It just became repopulated by ghosts.
Transfer wise, this is a very nice looking DVD. Colors during the opening sequence (supposed to be taking place in 1960 on the last night anyone was seen aboard the ship) are bold, colorful and brilliantly balanced. When we fast forward to present day and the ship is seen in its various stages of decay, the muted color scheme is equally well balanced with rich browns, deep blacks and incredibly fine detail evident in the background information, even under the lowest of lighting conditions. Edge enhancement, aliasing and shimmering are virtually non-existant on this DVD. This is a stunning visual experience. The audio is equally impressive, mixed to 5.1 and sounding of incredibly vivid, rich basses, perfectly pitched trebles and a lot of power during the action sequences.
Extras: A ship full - beginning with several in-depth documentaries on the making of the movie, a comprehensive behind the scenes look, interviews with the stars, deleted scenes, a really fun "mysteries of" featurette and the film's theatrical trailer. Plus bonus features for your DVD-ROM. WOW!
BOTTOM LINE: So much more could have been done with the plot that I really can't recommend the movie on its own merit. You won't be scared. You might be grossed out. But for sure, as far as the transfer quality goes, you'll be impressed!

Summary: Ignore the bad reviews....
Review: Its about Ghosts, and it is gory, what more do you need? My only complaint, and the reason I gave it a 4 instead of 5, is it tends to be slow in spots, but the movie is far from boring and will hold your attention through till the end

Summary: 2.5 stars.............. here's why
Review: GHOST SHIP, like a cross between THE SHINING and DEEP RISING has more than competant acting and great, if not a bit gratutious opening scene. It's never laughable but rarely instills any real fear. It includes the usual devices, like quick cuts of rotting flesh and corpses accompanied by a harsh orchestral chord, bleeding walls, and things that move by themselves when no one is looking (why would ghosts move things if no one will see it happen?)
The plot is buy-able, but nothing memorable. Overall it's simply not scary and not inventive enough, but its a helluva lot better than DARKNESS FALLS

Summary: Almost Terrible
Review: Dull, uninspired, derivative, insipid, etc are just a few of the words that come to mind after watching this stinker. The best moment comes in first 5 mintues and goes downhill from there. The contrived "surprise" ending that seems to be a necessity for bad horror movies feels particularly takced on here. It's not scary, but it might have been. To its credit there a few scenes of distrubing gore but that's as far as it goes. No real suspense. It's not so bad you turn it off. I might have given it one star but I watched Darkness Falls the same night and it was worse.

Summary: Entertaining, But Not Scary.
Review: As a horror movie fan, i can spot what's gonna happen a mile away, and in this movie i knew what was gonna happen 10 min. before it was gonna happen. It's a shame too, it had a great cast of actors, too bad they were not given much to work with. I will admit though i was entertained, but in no way was i scared. What a perfect opportunity to do such a great horror film, "on a ship". I also will admit, i was surprised that a certain someone/something was behind the whole thing. Anyway, as i said pretty predictable, and not scary, but if one night your bored or something, pop this in, and you'll be entertained.

Summary: surf and turf
Review: This movie was a lot better than I expected it to be. It was fun and scary and gory all rolled into one. I am a big fan of what I like to call "scary water flicks"....in the tradition of Abyss, Leviathan, Deep Star Six, even a sub flick like U-571. I wasn't sure this was going to cut it, it didn't get great reviews when it was in the theaters. But I was surprised and the story immediately grabbed me and had me guessing right up till the end. Gabriel Byrne runs a salvage tugboat and is intrigued by an offer he can't refuse, claim a lost ocean liner for him and his crew. Most will recognize Julianna Marguiles from her ER fame, and she stars with her boyfriend Ron Eldard (who also starred in ER, that's how they met). The DVD has a ton of extras and behind the scenes stuff. A great "scary water flick" that I definitely recommend.
