Summary: DISTURBING BUT IT KEEPS YOU HOOKED...SHAME THE EXTRAS DO NOT
Review: After it has sat in my dvd horror section for a couple of months I finally got round to watching this movie all of the way through.I have to say I was excited to get hold of this movie as it is banned in Britain, and I am a sucker for any films with a bit of contreversy around them. The picture has been niceley cleaned up for a old movie like this, and the colours come through very well and I beleive it has DD51 sound as well but this will not make much impact on your speakers as most of the time the film is fairly quiet. The film is acted well,by all of the small cast, and Camille Keaton is hot.I would like to see more of her and will be looking out for anymore of her work from now on.The story is fairly simple, but somehow works. The scenes of rape are fairly graphic, but nowhere near as bad as I thought they would be.The strange thing is there is no score at all,but perhaps that is supposed to add to the realism, also after the rape there are no flashbacks or anything, she just has a bath a bit of a weep and goes to church, says a prayer and becomes a serial revenge killer.I felt that it would have been more realistic if there was more of a build up of her emotions, perhaps considering going to the police but then not, some flashbacks that sort of show the state of her mind as she decides to take the course of action that she does etc,but no.This does not mean I did not enjoy this film still,as i did.You must of heard of the infamous bath attack by now,and allthough you do not see that much I guarentee it will still have you squirming if you are a male, and you will never let a woman you may have upset near your bath again! The downside of the package is the total lack of extra material on the disc, all that is on offer is a paltry trailer.Sureley there must be some articles available on a movie as contreversial as this one.Still a good buy especially if you are from a country that has banned it.

Summary: it's a, um er ugh, good movie
Review: This movie was tough to watch, and I am rarely offended by movies. The characters are so vile and there is so much violence in this movie, I would genuinely worry if people took it lightly. On the other hand, it is so violent and graffic, it exposes you to that side of life that is far too real, unfortunately. Having known victims of violence, I can relate to them much better now than before, and I am glad that a movie can helped me on this point without having to go through it myself.

The plot lacks a bit,, and the characters aren't delved into with much energy. However, there is enough there to help you through the horror scenes. So if you can deal with being depressed, and you just want to test yourself, this movie may not be a bad idea.

Summary: Perhaps the most infamous exploitation film ever made
Review: When movies first came out on video there were two legendary exploitation films I had to track down. One was "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and the other was "I Spit on Your Grave," which is actually the more memorable film of the pair overall (although I do grant the highest place to the "hook" scene in TCM). Director Meir Zarchi's 1978 film has become rather infamous, since critics hated it, audiences were outraged, and the film was banned in Germany and Great Britain. The story, such as it is, finds Jennifer Hill (Camille Keaton, Buster's grand-niece) out in the woods of Connecticut to work on a novel when she crosses the path of some local boys who decide she should be the first sexual partner for their mentally-disabled friend. When he cannot complete the rape, his friends do it for him. Then they decide that they are not done with Jennifer.

At issue are not Jennifer's specific acts of revenge, including the infamous bathroom scene, but rather the series of brutal rapes that precede them. I do not want to meet anyone who is not disturbed by these rape scenes and I think it is fairly obvious that Zarchi intended to make audiences uncomfortable. In retrospect you have to wonder about all those movies with rape scenes that do NOT upset the audience. But Zarchi certainly pours it on thick, absolutely assuring that things go beyond the tolerance level of anyone who watches this film. So the bottom line is that this film will upset you and it is therefore effective at doing exactly what it wants to do, which is supposed to be a good thing, right? I have always considered this an "X" rated movie although I would not consider it pornographic in the traditional sense. But it is a very disturbing film and I do not think I would want my kids to see it until after they graduate college (if ever). Anyone renting this film for cheap thrills is in for a shock.

As I now understand it, this 1978 film was originally released as "Day of the Woman," but that rather innocuous title was replaced by the well known "I Spit on Your Grave," although the film was also screened as "I Hate Your Guts" and "The Rape and Revenge of Jennifer Hill." All of this is interesting since it seems the producers were trying to pass off this film with both higher and lover levels of pretention. Beyond being letterboxed, this DVD offers nothing than the cheesy original theatrical trailer. But this is one film where you would certainly like to have to hear what the director has to say.

Summary: A Sexploitation Classic
Review: I Spit on Your Grave is not for everyone, and I can think of a few female relatives who would turn the VCR off in disgust, and immediatley call for a ban of the film in the name of Feminism. My biggest problem with it, is that the four bad guys, especially the retarded one, Matthew, are horrible actors. Camille Keaton, is lovely and believable as the young, sexy writer. But the 4 rapists act idiotically throughout the film, taking away from the raw horror of the brutal, and graphic rape scenes, very realistically shot. The revenge scenes were set up well, and provide a great climax to the movie...I would like to see this picture remade, as they have done with other classics such as "Psycho" or "Planet of the Apes", featuring a fearless actress, and 4 competent actors who would play the parts for realism. But would it sell well today? Only time will tell.

Summary: Shant Be Watching This One Again
Review: Interesting footnote: My good friend Terry was the neighbor of a starving young actress a couple of decades ago who was hired to be the model whose backside you see as she's holding a knife on the poster for this film. Her name: Demi Moore.

Summary: Better than "Last House" (that isn't saying much)
Review: I Spit on Your Grave (Meir Zarchi, 1978)

Meir Zarchi took Craven's idea (with Last House on the Left) and paid homage with a film that, while not all that good, is a sight better than Last House. It's also become something of a cult classic for reasons that I'm not sure I understand (nor want to). Again, the plot is simple and savage: Jennifer Hill (Camille Keaton, who actually HAS managed to find a few other roles, mostly in what seem to be Italian giallo flicks given the titles) has rented a secluded house on a lake to get out of the big evil city and runs afoul of three of the local miscreants and their toady, a twentysomething seemingly retarded virgin. The miscreants develop a plan to get the toady laid, and, as is to be expected, a bloodbath ensues, starting with an almost forty minute long scene punctuated by three different rapes. I mean, we're talking nasty here (but by the time Miz Hill gets around to stalking her attackers, I have to say, the viewer is definitely rooting for her).

What about this particularly nasty movie makes it more effective than Last House on the Left? One definite reason is that Zarchi's scenes of brutalization are a whole lot more explicit than Craven's, and as such, the viewer has a deeper gut reaction to what's happening. When Hill starts wandering around like a zombie in the aftermath of the aforementioned forty-minute scene, it's realistic post-traumatic stress. Also, Zarchi gives more of a human dimension to the attackers; one has a wife and kids, one likes to play the harmonica, that sort of thing; details which cause a viewer to see the bad guys as something more (a little more, but still) than cardboard cutouts. Also, the film itself has a kind of endearing shoestring quality about it. Grainy stock, handheld-camera shots, that sort of thing. Zarchi probably had a budget of five hundred bucks and spent it half and half on fake blood and beer for the crew.

It's not the best film you'll ever see, but if you follow IMDB's recommendation and double-feature it with Last House on the Left, it certainly won't be the worst film you ever see, either. **

Summary: Emptiness
Review: ... I decided to give it a look. I tried to see the good points, I really did. ..desturbing.. [the] sequence was the politics. This film basically stated that all men are pigs and women are saintly until disturbed.

Summary: SICK
Review: I got hold of a copy of this movie in the UK. A friend and I watched it up until the first rape scene, being well rounded induviduals we were utterly sickened by what we saw and turned it off. Admittedly banning movies is not a good idea but are movies like this really needed? AVOID.

Summary: What A Fantastic Sleaze Flick!!
Review: I Spit On Your Grave is one of the best of the genre that I have ever seen. This film has everything you come to expect from this sort of gem: violence, nudity, unintentional humor, a weak story line and graphic rape scenes to boot.

The look on the girl's face when she is attacking one of the guys with an axe is worth the price alone. (not to mention the "tub" scene)

This is a great flick you can watch over and over again. I highly recommend it. Also, if you haven't yet, pick up "She Wolf of the SS" More 5-star entertainment in this genre.
