Summary: No doubt one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
Review: The plot is about as bare-bones as an exploitation film gets: A writer from the "big city" rents a country home to work on a new novel. A group of hicks attack and rape her several times, then leave her for dead. She recovers, and seduces, then murders them one by one. Roll credits.

I'm really baffled as to the purpose of this film.

Are the rape scenes realistic? Sure; they're graphic and uncomfortable. Is the realistic portrayal of rape in itself a worthy goal for a movie? Not really. I could make a movie that realistically portrays animal torture and prison sex... but without a plot or characters, why would anyone waste 90 minutes of their time?

Viewers who say there's some kind of feminist subtext to the film are putting a lot more thought into the picture than the director did. Keaton continues to be a sex object right until the end of the picture.

What's really awful about the film, though, is the completely amateurish acting, cinematography, dialogue and script. The movie does not even have a soundtrack. Really awful stuff.

If you want to see a rigorously disturbing horror/exploitation film that ALSO has some artistic sense, find a copy of "Cannibal Holocaust." It's infinitely better than this awful, awful film.

Summary: Not as awful as I've constantly heard.
Review: Camille Keaton is a pretty young writer from the city who spends the summer in the backwoods to write her first novel. As all genre fans know, four rednecks rape and leave her for dead, but she slowly recovers and plans her bloody revenge. One of the most infamous films of all time, I Spit on Your Grave features no less than three rape scenes and an almost non-stop barrage of full frontal female nudity, but it actually wants to take its subject matter seriously, and it does work to an extent, but peters out in its unbelievable and silly finale. Keaton is, however, superb as the victim who takes charge against her abusers. Only recommended to the very curious (and even then, you better have a STRONG stomach).

Summary: graphic and terrible, but reality
Review: I put reality because this is a very strong depiction of what rape is and how men can be. It made me nauseous just watching it, and I read the other reviews on here about it and was very offended by the guy who wrote "if your a man the bathroom scene will make you squirm". Well, the man in the tub had brutaly raped this woman and deserved what he got, in my opinion if your a man watching this film what should make you squirm would be the scenes of the rape and just knowing that you are part of the male species that commit this horrific act. Dont watch this if you have ever been raped, it will bring flashbacks.

Summary: I Can See Why This Movie Was Banned!!!!
Review: I have to say that I was never really interested in this movie as I had never heard of it. I had seen it at my local video store almost everytime I went into the horror section. It's hard to forget the cover. Anyway, after seeing this movie on a list of video nasties I figured I would give this movie a try and check it out.

What I found was a movie that I didn't think was to bad but it has an extremely sensitive subject matter. As a matter of fact if I were a woman I would find it very difficult to watch. Four "Good ol'" boys brutally rape and torture a young woman on vacation. Needless to say she gets her revenge. The acting is not really great and I thought the four men who committed the crime were incredibly stupid. I gave this movie three stars because of how violently she kills the men. Especially the bath tub scene which was hard for me to stomach.

This movie was rated R. Now I don't know if there is another version of this movie but I thought the content of this movie should've got this movie a harder rating than R. This movie is Definitely not for younger viewers. It has extremely brutal rape scene, plenty of nudity, and some harsh graphic scenes. I can see why this movie was banned in some countries.

Summary: trash cinema at it's best....what happened to meir zarchi ?
Review: while i've always gravitated to the most controversial films i could find, this is one that i wanted to hate but somehow can't. the scariest thing i should mention upfront is that i spit on your grave was around long before baise moi, thelma and louise, & that oscar-nominated jodie foster film the accused. i spit on your grave has somewhat of strange cult following. this may be one of the few exceptions to the rule but everything you've ever heard about this film is probably true. you will either love it as quite a few people did or you will be sick to your stomach & never want to see it again. camille keaton gives a nearly flawless depiction of a rape victim & a terrific avenger. meir zarchi has fabricated a hideous tale of animalism, senseless hatred, & completely barbaric depictions on the dark side of human nature. still interested? keep reading. the box tells us that the woman on the cover has just cut, chopped, & burned five men beyond recognition but no jury in america would ever convict her. was this woman ever on trial? i don't know because the film didn't tell us one way or another but i don't think many viewers will actually care one way or the other either. after seeing how camille keaton's character exacts her revenge on these 5 merciless men who brutally raped her leaving her for dead, you actually are cheering her on when he carries out her bloody revenge. while the violent acts towards the end are definately not as graphic as most horror films we've seen, they certainly are the MOST disturbing ones ever filmed. by the way, what happened to meir zarchi? does he make films anymore?

Summary: I'd spit on this movie!
Review: I'm a keen horror fan and thought wow this movie looks really scary. But here is what I saw:

A woman comes to stay at a house by the lake.
She gets raped
She seeks revenge
The end.

If I look it from a horror perspective then yes it certainly has the gore and terror we all expect in a standard horror. The deaths are all done within about 15 minutes, which leaves just over an hour to get bored and lose interest.

This movie may have been more entertaining if the story was more padded out and had more of a back story. We don't know anything about the people in it, they are just thrown into a situation and there you have it...a pointless story. For example in a horror you often get told why the killer is murdering teens - he doesn't just turn up and kill people for no reason.
I guess if your into classic banned nastys - you may like it because its so outrageous but I just couldn't get anything from it...it was pointless.

Summary: uggggggggggggggghhhhhh!
Review: Part 1: A woman moves from the big city to a small hick town so that she can write a novel. Soon after her arrival she is assaulted ( BRUTALLY raped, beaten, ... and left for dead) by some locals.
Part 2: After surviving the attack(s) she exacts revenge on each of her attackers one by one.
That sums up the plot of the movie. That is all there is to it. Oh, I almost forgot the grotesque, and laughable, scene that is between part 1 and 2 where the heroine goes into a church and asks for forgivness for what she must do to the bad guys. This scene might have had some value had it been established earlier that she was a religious person but never mind.
I don't have a problem with violence in movies, even when they are sick revenge fantasies like this wishes to be. The characters in this movie lacked any dimension so that it was impossible to have any sympathy for any of them. Obviously the filmmaker wants us to sympathize with the women but the way he tries to manipulate us into it by showing us this horrible brutality that is done to her is sick. My guess is that he does this so that maybe we'll think it's ok that she hangs, cuts up, and castrates her attackers. My main beef with this film is the rape scene. i see no reason why it needed to take up a third of the films running time. a good director should know that sometimes less is more. i think that making that long was a sick way of trying to manipulate us into sympathizing with his protagonist. Maybe he wouldn't have needed to do this if he would have properly developed his characters before jumping into the action. And why did he need to make it so graphic. Everyone i talk to says that it has the most realistically graphic rape scene ever. SO WHAT! Just because its realistic doesn't neccessarily make it good, or warranted for that matter. This film was just a showcase for the rape scene.
My opinion is that this movie is garbage. If you want a good revenge movie then rent Death Wish or The Limey or anything for that matter. This film is scraping the absolute bottom of the barrel. I Spit on Your Grave IS the absolute worst film I have ever seen!!!!!!

Summary: A HORROR MOVIE CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!
Review: This movie among a few others is one of my favorite horror films. This movie is about revenge and I also believe it tackles an interesting subject-RAPE. Rape is a subject most often portrayed in a mild manner, however in this film it is portrayed in a very graphic nature. This is something that should not be taking place in the world- but it does.
The movie may be offensive to some people because of the brutal and graphic rape sequences.
Originally titled Day of the Woman, which fits the film quite well, is unequaled in my opinion by any other film in the genre.
This is the most graphic and brutal portrayal of rape EVER brought to the screen.
This film is quite good and I highly recommend it to anyone who thinks they can stomach it!!! This film is not for the squeamish.
See it at your own risk!!!
NOTE: This film was originally released with an X rating because of the graphic rape sequences!!!
One must be open-minded when viewing this film. Let's keep in mind that this is ONLY a movie!!! However, it touches base with an important subject- rape. This portrays rape realistically(very violently) and in actuality it is that way. It is mean and hateful and one of the many bad things that take place in the world. So to portray it mildly would be incorrect!!
I have never seen a more violent and vile movie, but I give credit where it is due- they got their point across!!!
After watching this movie, you will come to know RAPE(as wrong as it is) and you will witness it first hand.
Finally, you will never be the same again!! No one should ever have to deal with the pain of rape...but to disregard this movie as garbage is quite wrong!
My advice is to view this movie with an open mind!!!!!
In doing so, you will see this movie for what it is- ART!!!
This movie is a work of art and the message is that rape is a terrible part of our society, but yet it is a part of our society and this movie helps us to understand that rape does happpen and most importantly, that it SHOULDN'T!!!!!

Summary: Jennifer's Day
Review: Anytime I see a movie that has been "banned" and dubbed "the most controversial movie of all time," I'm generally not pleased. Apparently that kind of "reputation" sets up too many expectations for me. This was not entirely the case when seeing I Spit On Your Grave, however. I did have those kind of expectations set up, but the film did what it was supposed to -- evoke emotions.

I Spit On Your Grave (aka Day of the Woman) is the tragic story of Jennifer Hill (Camille Keaton). A young attractive writer from New York, Jennifer moves to a small town out in the middle of nowhere to work on her first novel. We quickly learn that this small town is something out of Deliverance country with Deliverance-type residents -- in particular, four men, all of whom work at the general store/gas station. Three of them are as mean as Hell and the other, Matthew (Richard Pace), is "slow," going along with whatever his friends do.

Jennifer pulls in to fill up for the first time, the boys see her, and decide to go to her house across the lake and rape her. It may seem as if I'm moving too fast or skipping details, but really I'm not -- that just about sums it up. We soon learn that the initial reason behind committing these rapes is to "make Matthew a man." That reason quickly becomes secondary, as the men turn into utter monsters, losing any sense of "right" they may have ever had. The rape scenes are quite graphic -- they leave the viewer with an acute sense of emptiness and despair -- Jennifer crawls nude trying to escape, having no idea how to. The men catch up with her and continue to rape her. This goes on for 30 minutes, if not longer.

Physically and emotionally shaken, Jennifer begins to plot revenge and viewers begin to root for her as we see her deserving revenge. Once Jennifer comes into contact with each of the four men, she brutally kills them, each in a different and very "creative" way.

One problem I had with this film overall deals with believability -- would the rapists have killed Jennifer having so many reasons and opportunities to do so? For example, in one scene, Jennifer has the ringleader at gunpoint, but hands her gun over to him (I assume this was all part of her plan). Would the rapist, who just begged the woman he raped for his life, have thrown the gun away as he did? It may just be that I'm forgetting that the rapists in this film are stupid and logic doesn't apply to them.

One aspect of the film that makes it especially eerie and unusual is the total lack of any musical score. Perhaps the only music throughout the film is Jennifer's classical music, which she listens to while killing one of the men. This lack of score oddly makes the viewer feel like an invisible observer -- there's nothing to distract us away from the woods, from the rapes, and from the eventual gore.

Camille Keaton is excellent as Jennifer Hill. She very accurately portrays Jennifer's transformations from sane writer to pitiful victim, from vengeful killer to satisfied woman. If you can look at the graphic nature of the rape scenes as purposeful, in that we as viewers can better understand why Jennifer does what she does, see this movie. Otherwise, you might just regret it. Rating: 3 / 4(...)

Summary: NOTORIUS MOVIE KEEPS YOU HOOKED....EXTRAS DO NOT
Review: I finally got round to watching this movie after it has sat on my shelf for months.I was attracted to this movie because it is banned in Britain, and I have to admit I am a sucker for any of these films surrounded by such controversy. The picture is very good for a film this old,and the colours come through well. Also the sound has been remixed into DD 5.1 I think, but you won't notice this much as(most of the time!) the film is quiet.Camille Keaton is very hot,and after watching this I would probably like to see more of her work. The film is fairly simple in plot, but somehow it works. All the small cast act well. The rapes are fairly graphic, but not as bad as I thought they might be.Those who look at it in a femenist way will see she certainley gets her own back.I found it unsual that it had no music score, but perhaps that is supposed to add to the realism. Also I felt that after the horrofic attack more time should of been spent analyzing her characters state of mind in flashbacks or something, that would give you more idea of her choice of action, like did she even consider going to the police or anything?Instead Keaton,s character gets cleaned up,has a cry then goes to church says a prayer and then becomes a avenging serial killer.By now you must have heard of the notorious batroom attack, and if you are a male you will never let an angry woman near your bath again after watching this. All in all,it is a powerful and disturbing movie. It is a shame the same cannot be said of the dvd features on offer here though. All you get is a paltry trailer, and sureley a movie as contreversial as this must have material made about it kicking around somewhere.
