Summary: This movie is extremely OVERRATED!!!
Review: I had heard bits and pieces about this movie over the years but never watched it since it never seems to be on t.v. and most rental places I go to don't carry it... So I stumbled upon it at a store for the low price of $5.95. BELIEVE ME, it wasn't even worth the $5.95 I paid for it... more like $1.50 or less... and even that price is too high... this version was 88 minutes uncut from LEGACY ENTERTAINMENT INC. and I don't care what anyone says cut or uncut this movie was DUMB... The acting was worse than you would find in a school play, NOT SCARY and HONESTLY, it was rather boring EVEN with the so called scary bits... NO SUSPENSE BUILD UP AT ALL... Plus to label this as a cult classic seems a bit of a stretch since if anyone with half a functioning brain cell would realize who the killer is before they even get to the end (if they can manage even that WITHOUT FALLING ASLEEP) just by paying attention to the KILLER (oops, I mean Angela) and how she won't shower at the same time with the girls and how she is insanely jumpy when a guy gets too close to her (ie... trying to unbutton her shirt) etc, etc... Anyone who is at least part way paying attention will sum it up before the end... Then the so called "most shocking climax in cinematic history" (DVD COVER STATED) will supposedly cause you to be disturbed and shocked beyond ALL HUMAN UNDERSTANDING!!!!! Well, I managed maintain some kind of alertness up to the end though every pore of my body screamed to turn this excrement off and do something more entertaining like clip my toenails... I somehow persevered and got to the end and my reaction was "UH, IS THAT ALL?!?!?! All the hype over a pretty dumb, yet predictable ending... What was up with the growling... NOT SCARY JUST WEIRD AND CORNY... Friday the 13th is still the best summer camp horror movie by far... It isn't an OSCAR winner by any means but their is good suspense build up and the movie doesn't seem to jump all over the place like this one does... Alot more gore in F13 but more entertaining to watch... BUT if you like obscure movies like this with horrible acting, shoddy effects, no suspense or scares, horrible acting (oops, I already said that) and confusing plot sequences like the bed scene with boy and girl and the scene with the dad and a guy than this is right up your alley... The word CULT CLASSIC seems to be used loosely lately to describe otherwise undeserving garbage like this one... I WOULD GIVE IT 1/2 star for generosity but AMAZON won't let me so I'll give it one star... BAD ACTING, NO SUSPENSE, TERRIBLE DEATH SCENES, (no, I don't like lots of gore but I do expect it to scare me somewhat or the idea thereof) HORRIBLE EDITING... Don't buy into the so called word of mouth... IT JUST AIN'T THAT GOOD... If you can rent it or watch it on t.v. at least you won't waste your hard earned money... Just a suggestion...

Summary: Corny Corny Corny
Review: I had heard of Sleepaway Camp many moons ago, but hadn't seen it until I bought this movie in the $5.99 section at Best Buy, and boy am I glad I didn't spend too much money on it. This movie is just plain cheesy, boring, and not scary at all. Okay, I've got to admit, the film kept me wondering what was going to happen and who the killer was, but the ending to this movie was one of the hokiest I have ever seen. I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen the film yet, but oh brother was the ending stupid. That ending was not worth the 90 minute wait, especially since the first 90 minutes weren't very interesting. It's pretty typical "b" movie acting and sound/picture quality, without the frightening effect of some other "b" slasher flicks. The death scenese are completely telegraphed and don't make you jump at all. I guess if you like truly corny horror movies, then this one might be up your alley, otherwise stay away!

Summary: Surprizingly fun and "campy" horror flick....
Review: I will say, I am huge horror fan, but always steered clear of the "Sleepaway Camp" series until today. I always thought the movies looked and sounded really stupid. And I was pretty much right, but in a good way. ;P

Sleepaway camp is one of those movies that has cheesey and over-the-top acting, plenty of stereo types, but somehow it all works.

This movie is about a girl named Angela and her cousin Ricky going away to summer camp. It of course is supposed to be a lot of fun. But Angela is very shy and doesn't want to talk to anyone or play any games or anything so she is picked on a good deal. And not to far after they get to camp, people start to die.

Its pretty clear who is the killer from the get-go, but it still keeps you interested because its a fun movie, and you keep wondering "WHY?" are they killing. It actually has a nasty little twist of an ending too. And the sad thing is, that what happened to the killer isn't far from what has happened to some people(seen a similar case on dateline, except without all the murders).

I didn't think this movie was slow, but I don't have a short attention span either. But I'd say that if you like horror movies, or movies that are so bad their good, then you'll like "Sleepaway Camp", its worth at least one view, its pretty darn funny(unintenionally most of the time.). The gore is pretty good too, its not to explicit so it leaves some to the imagination, but it shows just enough. All in all, worthwhile horror film. :D

God Bless & *enjoy* ~Amy

Summary: creep-away camp
Review: i first saw this movie at a birthday slumber-party when i was twelve years old. the parents of the birthday girls (twins) actually picked it out for us because they didn't want us watching something "too scary" (like the infamous freddy or jason flicks).

first of all, its not that sleepaway camp doesn't measure up to these movies in terms of freakyness. in fact, i found sleepaway camp to be even creepier. but the fact remains that the movie box looked harmless, and the film was virtually unknown.

the plot seems simple. at first. two cousins go off to summer camp, the pair meet with conflict from other campers/councellors, largely due to little angela's anti-social nature, and killings start to happen, one after another.

complexities: the mysterious begining, with TWO fathers and two children killed in a boating accident. the creepy aunt, who seems like the perfect serial killer. the fact that the identity of the killer remains unknown throughout the film. the back-flashes which become more frequent near the very end, scenes with the aunt, and the two fathers in bed together. and finally, the shocker ending. which blew my socks off when i was twelve years old. an image very difficult to remove from ones mind. in my opinion, one of the creepiest endings ever created.

sleepaway camp is cheesy, yes. but it is also creepy, which is hard to come by in this genre of film. i recommend this movie to anyone who loves 80's horror and who is looking for something a little different.
