Summary: Sleepaway Camp rises from the dead
Review: After all those years of wishing, they brought back SLEEPAWAY CAMP, the greatest movie ever made. After being discontinued for so long it was hard to believe why such a profound movie that could effect so many peoples lives would ever be shunned from the public. The movie is about Angela and her cousin Ricky. Of course it all takes place at a Sleepaway Camp, Camp Arawak. Thrust into an atmosphere of perversity and mockery poor Angela just can't seem to make friends with the other campers. She isn't even safe from the adults. Pretty soon people who hurt her start to die at the hands of a mysterious killer. Mel, the owner of Camp Arawak is so worried about losing the camp to the murders that he accuses Angela's cousin Ricky of committing the terrible acts. It isn't until the end of the massacre and the end of the movie that the TRUE identity of the killer is revealed. SLEEPAWAY CAMP is a special recipie blend of a film with a secret ingrediant I just can't place my finger on. It all comes from the mind of genius Robert Hiltzik. If you don't like SLEEPAWAY CAMP, you must have been born without that part of your brain that enables you to appreciate fine art. Have a nice day!

Summary: Sleepaway Camp finally on DVD!
Review: Finally, the b-movie/horror flick, Sleepaway Camp is being released to DVD. It's nearly impossible to find on VHS (the original and both sequels are currently out of print!). Its a good thing this movie is getting the recognition it deserves because the story is so unique (with the bizarre aunt) and surprising (the final scene in which "Angela"'s true self is revealed). Hopefully, Anchor Bay will give this film a good DVD transfer (who can forget the garbage they gave us for the non-collector's edition of Halloween), and hopefully they'll have a new 5.1 soundtrack and anamorphic widescreen. What about Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers? Or Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland? All the films in the series need the DVD treatment, right? I'm still waiting for April Fools Day or Mothers Day.

Summary: Surprizingly fun and "campy" horror flick....
Review: I will say, I am huge horror fan, but always steered clear of the "Sleepaway Camp" series until today. I always thought the movies looked and sounded really stupid. And I was pretty much right, but in a good way. ;P

Sleepaway camp is one of those movies that has cheesey and over-the-top acting, plenty of stereo types, but somehow it all works.

This movie is about a girl named Angela and her cousin Ricky going away to summer camp. It of course is supposed to be a lot of fun. But Angela is very shy and doesn't want to talk to anyone or play any games or anything so she is picked on a good deal. And not to far after they get to camp, people start to die.

Its pretty clear who is the killer from the get-go, but it still keeps you interested because its a fun movie, and you keep wondering "WHY?" are they killing. It actually has a nasty little twist of an ending too. And the sad thing is, that what happened to the killer isn't far from what has happened to some people(seen a similar case on dateline, except without all the murders).

I didn't think this movie was slow, but I don't have a short attention span either. But I'd say that if you like horror movies, or movies that are so bad their good, then you'll like "Sleepaway Camp", its worth at least one view, its pretty darn funny(unintenionally most of the time.). The gore is pretty good too, its not to explicit so it leaves some to the imagination, but it shows just enough. All in all, worthwhile horror film. :D

God Bless & *enjoy* ~Amy

Summary: *YAWN*
Review: Maybe in my old age I have become picky. I love horror movies and spend my spare time reading reviews and buying used & new scary movies. I just couldn't finish Sleepaway Camp. It was laughably pathetic with hairy stud-wannabes in too tight shorts yelling obscenities at each other like some over filled testosterone foolish chumps! I wasted my $$$$$. Seriously folks, do NOT bother unless you are extremely bored and need a chuckle. I'm not kidding when I tell you I could make a far better movie in my sleep. There is not one scare in this little film. Friday The 13th is a better bet for all its flaws. If you want my copy of Sleepaway Camp, email me and I'll be happy to mail it to you.

Summary: one of the best of the B genre
Review: This is a B horror movie that I was actually satisfied with. It was orignal in plot and ending, fairly realistic and it is one of those movies where you are routing for the killer. The people who created this movie didn't have to hold back AT ALL on controversial images because it was not one of those gaudy big budget blockbuster horrors. Geeze, I hate those. This film actually deserves 3.5 stars

Summary: Terrific 80s cult classic with = amounts of horror and humor
Review: You know you're watching a good, campy horror film when you're actually rooting for the "targets" to die.

This movie was a terrific slasher film. It didn't take itself seriously for two seconds, but still managed to have some of the elements of a typical slasher film like Friday the 13th or Halloween. The difference between this movie and those is that we don't know who the killer is, but there are plenty of hints, though it isn't until the last few minutes of the film that the discerning viewer pieces it together

I liked this far better than any of the Friday the 13th films, the Halloween films, the Evil Dead films, and most of the Nightmare on Elm Street films with the exception of the first one. Sure, there's no crazed monstrous entity with far more strength than it should possess running around tearing people apart, but this was just more satisfying upon reaching the end.

There are some particularly risqué moments in the film, considering when it was made. There's a scene with two men kissing (one the father of a child killed in the very beginning of the film which sets it all up), a chef that refers to the young children as "baldies", clearly painting himself as a pederast and while the people around him here his proclamation, they just laugh.

There's quite a surprise at the ending, and while I've used this phrase before in a recent review, it isn't a Million-Dollar-Baby-Surprise, you really won't see it coming. I promise.

This deserves every ounce of cult status bestowed upon it. More so, perhaps, than *most* (NOT all) cult films I've watched.

Check it out - you'll enjoy it, and laugh your head off during the process.

Summary: It can't be! IT CAN'T BE!!
Review: I was in a screenwriting class one day and my teacher was reviewing a script one student had written and he kept mentioning this movie in the process, so I thought if my teacher was using this as an example, I should see it. Hahahahahaha...No. I was sorely mistaken. Just because the script was written like this movie, doesn't mean this is any good. This is just...bad.

A brother and his sister Angela go to camp many years after the accidental death of their father. How does this factor in? Well, they're being raised by their deranged aunt. What does that have to do with anything? Wait until the end (but I'm not telling you)...While at camp, everyone who's making fun of Angela for not participating or sitting alone being unsocial gets offed in gruesome ways. Except for a puny little boy who is infatuated with her. BUT-Who's behind the whole thing? Hmmmm...

Basically this is 'Friday the 13th' with a younger cast and even lower quality. But why the two stars instead of one or zero? The ending of this movie was so perverse and seriously disturbing that I must admit it creeped me out. And for a bad movie to turn on me at the last second like that, it deserves some credit.

Summary: One of the better eighties slasher efforts...
Review: In the wake of the runaway success of violent slasher films like John Carpenter's Halloween and Friday The 13th, greedy film studios quickly oversaturated the market with slasher films of varying quality to cash in. Slasher films, which usually follow the same basic formula of teens stranded in the woods stalked by an anonymous killer, were generally inexpensive to produce and at least for a while were guaranteed to turn a profit.
Sleepaway Camp is one of the more enjoyable films to emerge from the slasher fad and is in many ways superior to Friday The 13th, the film that obviously inspired it.
Angela, the survivor of a childhood tragedy, is sent to the recently re-opened summer camp Arawak. The introverted teen finds herself tormented by the other campers, with her cousin the only one to come to her defense. When a series of grisly accidents begin to occur at the camp, the camp counsellors begin to suspect a maniac is in their midst.
Populated with a cast of truly bizarre characters from a muscle bound, short clad camp counsellor to a pedophile cook, the film is infused with an offbeat weirdness that keeps it interesting at all times. The film also features a strange undercurrent of sexual deviance and gender confusion not often seen in such films, the exception being Hitchcock's prototypical slasher film, Psycho.
The film is also unique as much of the action is related through the killer's perspective. William Lustig also attempted this in his controversial film, Maniac, though Sleepaway Camp is much more lighthearted in its approach than that film. The killer in this film is not the unseen killer often found in films like My Bloody Valentine, The Prowler, Friday The 13th, but rather one of the teens attending the camp.
The camp is also noteworthy as being a genuinely creepy location situated in upstate New York.
The killings, though essentially bloodless, are very clever and inspired, they are certain to impress fans of this type of film. Atypical of the slasher movie, Sleepaway Camp is also entirely absent of any nudity and features very little gore.
Sleepaway Camp is a worthwhile effort for slasher fans and features some very original twists on a genre not known for originality. It also features what is perhaps the most memorable shock ending to a horror movie ever, viewers are almost guaranteed never to forget it. Followed by two sequels, that featured Bruce Springsteen's sister and were played more for laughs, recent rumours have abounded about a planned proper sequel featuring original star Felissa Rose and titled, Return To Sleepaway Camp.
Anchor Bay once again does a great job with this DVD which features a beautiful print of the film and also includes a commentary track with both the director and lead actress, Felissa Rose. The commentary itself is one of the most enjoyable and informative I have come across. This is a highly recommended DVD!!
