Summary: terrifies, shocks, amazes all at once
Review: had some humor in it
full of terror
that deformed son of the carnival master's is quite terrifying
it's like looking at an ape
putting him on drugs/steroids
splitting his face, and then bashing him 2 times with a baseball bat
one ugly m.f. that creature
I didn't expect it to kill that fortune teller lady like it did. I figured they'd struggle. and he'd stop. and she'd keep counting the money for him. the scene where the cart goes in with the kid. and the Frankenstein monster (aka the freak one) pushes the cart so it stops and you see no one is in the cart anymore. so the boy gets out somehow. but the last couple in front of him which were 2 of Amy's friends are gone to never be seen pretty much. and these kids don't realize they're not in the house where fun comes out to play
they're in the funhouse. where fun comes out to slay. literally
great movie
great actors
glad I have it on dvd
a timeless horror piece from Tobe Hooper
see this movie.
I shall watch this one 90 years from now still and still be terrified
I could watch it today, tomorrow, etc and still be terrified and get a giggle in here and there

Summary: Step right up for Chills! Spills! Thrills!
Review: "Two young couples decide to spend a night in a carnival funhouse, only to witness a murder. Now they find themselves trapped by the sadistic funhouse owner, and his deformed, psychotic son. This exercise in horror was directed by genre regular Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Poltergeist)." - jacket description.

Two young couples venture into the underworld of the Carnival, behind the wholesom facade of Rockwellian depiction, to reveal a world of murder, sadism, and physical contortion. No one escapes the Funhouse. The laughing fat lady echoes jollyingly throughout the makeshift faregrounds, seemingly amused by the eustress of the rubes who subject themselves to the many freakish attractions and displays, including a two-headed cow. Yet nothing quite compares to the dreaded funhouse, where all manner of shadowmantic manifestation lays dormant to arise from the dark side of the minds of the observers. The couples witness too much for comfort, & are heralded into situations of true distress, from the menacing stare of the showman with his menacing dialogue, to the twisted horror of the lusts of his horridly-deformed son, of whose monstrosity The Elephant Man cannot compare.

From the grotesque clown heads who laugh diabolically, to the actual homicidal intentions of the inhabitants, The Funhouse provides an environment of true horror amidst the couples. Only one girl survives, yet is driven insane by the terrors of the Funhouse.

Summary: boring......way too slow
Review: Tobe hooper's funhouse did not deliver anything close to the terror he usually puts on screen. Infact, this movie was pretty boring, for the first hour and ten minutes, nothing happens. Four teenagers explore the carnival, and finally they reach the funhouse, they steal some money from the family owners and they get chased around. The only thing cool was the make up effects, the gimp who tried to portray leatherface looked cool but it was too repeatitive. His screaming and cries didn't capture the same mentally disabled leatherface. Throughout the movie you can see how this film relates to the Texas chainsaw massacre but it doesn't come close to the sick and disguting terror. Even the deaths weren't that great either, the gimp who wears the frankenstein mask gets electrocuted at the end. All in all the the gimp looks cool, but the movie itself is very boring, and the deaths were pretty lame. Give it a shot and rent this!

Summary: Pretty good horror film- 3.5 stars
Review: Funhouse was directed by TObe Hooper , same guy who directed the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This is in noway as good as TCM but it is a good horror film. I admire Tobe's directing. The movie is about 4 kids who go to a carnival and sneak into a funhouse on a dare. They encounter a freak and his father or master and the freak trys to kill em all, they are locked in the funhouse. This reminded me a little bit of texas chainsaw massacre only in the sense that they had the freak who acted like leatherface , who cowared when the master or father came home ( back to the funhouse). The begining scenes of the freaks from the funhouse and dolls were creepy and so was the atmosphere but like i said this in noway compares to the masterpiece tcm. It is worth owning though if your a horror fan.

Summary: new universal dvd review!
Review: the funhouse has been out before on goodtimes back in 99, the first time ever the funhouse was put out in 2.35 widescreen. The transfer wasnt bad, but had alot of white specs and dirt. The new release from universal is the way to go, it is a great improvement over the last. The transfer looks stunning, like it could have came out today. The only thing is that chapters 1 and 2 look a little grainy and color faded. But the rest looks super. No white specs or dirt. and the transfer looks clean. and this time as an extra you get a trailer. which was missing the last time..

Summary: the best and most scary movie I have ever seen
Review: This movie is great. Actually, Halloween is just as scary and as good, so they tie. But this movie is terrifying. And it has a really dark feel to it, also. After I watched this, I didn't feel like talking to anyone for like 3 days! I just walked around, thinking about that extremely dark and creepy atmosphere, how much I think Tobe Hooper is amazing, how much I wanted to be like him and make a great movie like The Funhouse. Oh yeah, and the lead is one of the hottest people I have ever seen. And there is nudity! And you get to see a rad Frankenstein(1931, the only good ones were made in the 30's) poster and get a sample of The Bride of Frankenstein. Yayyy!! The carnival makes a horrifically terrific setting and can creep the hell out of you. So, if you want to see one hell of a scary, terrific horror flick, check this out. Don't check it out, but it. Actually, sorry, one more thing, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is also tied with these. Have a horrific horror marathon, and watch those movies and this one 3 in a row(if you can stand the horror), and watch more horror movies if you have time. Oh yeah, and the book by Dean Koontz with the same title as this movie is nothing like it, it is f**king boring. Check out Stephen King instead, or Tick Tock by Dean Koontz.

Summary: DATED HORROR FILM GETS RESPECTABLE DVD TRANSFER
Review: "The Funhouse" is one of those wacky tacky slasher flicks from the early 80s that used to seem like the height of terror, but since then has transmuted to merely a dated footnote in the annals of horror films and cinema in general. It stars Elizabeth Berridge (of Amadeus fame) as Amy Harper. Amy and her troupe of teen toughies, Buzz (Cooper Huckabee), Liz (Largo Woodruff) and Ritchie (Mile Chaplin) are your typical pack of oversexed morally bankrupted adolescences. Living in a small dead end town they get their kicks by getting high and into trouble.

So when the circus/sideshow comes to town it seems like the perfect place to indulge in the perversions of youthful folly. Unfortunately for Amy and Co. this traveling show is home to a hideous and horny little monster (Wayne Doba) - - sort of a cross between a midget, an ape and the killer's mask from "Terror Train." Amy and friends think it's cool to crash the circus after all the performers have gone to bed. But when they accidentally stumble across Madame Zena (Sylvia Miles) getting raped and murdered by the monster they retreat with fear into the funhouse where, naturally, the monster sets to work picking them off like flies, one by one. Clearly inspired by visions of Tod Browning's illustrious scare fest, "Freaks", director Tobe Hooper tries to recapture some of the taut tension of Browning's classic, but ultimately succumbs to the urge of creating a gore fest. This he effectively does but the result is less of a classic and more of a passing fancy on celluloid. The final experience: pay to get in, pray for it to be over.

Universal's anamorphically enhanced 2:35:1 DVD looks rather good considering the age and prestige of the production. Colors are fully saturated - - if dated - - with mostly accurate flesh tones, deep - - mostly solid - - blacks, and considerable fine details emerging from the contrast and shadow levels. Film grain is kept to a minimum and age related artifacts on the whole are absent. The audio is 2.0 mono and nicely cleaned up. It suffers from a dated characteristic with frontal sounding dialogue and directionalized effects but this is as the producers intended it to be. The only extra is the film's theatrical trailer.
