Summary: I can't believe it but......
Review: I really enjoyed this film! It was great fun. It was wonderful to leave your brain behind and enjoy a film. Yes, the plot is preposterous, and the script hammy. It was hysterical when the little girl mentioned in another eview said to Regan:

What's your problem?

REGAN: Oh, I was possessed by the devil (!)

Hysterical. Great fun.

Does anyone know what the different endings were? I'd love to know the difference between the print on video in the UK (with the brilliantly hammy trailer)and the others.

Summary: "The Exorcist" sequel just didn't cut it.
Review: Poor Linda Blair. I really don't know how they could do this to such a beautiful, talented young actress. With the success of "The Exorcist", people probably SHOULDN'T have offered her any roles in the same movie genre. "The Exorcist II: The Heretic" was a revolting, embarrassing accident. I hope Linda learned her lesson!

Summary: Drastically underrated
Review: Yes, big problems with this film are evident. It's badly miscast and the acting is often way over-the-top. But give it a chance. The set-design, fx, music and cinematography are extraordinary. A visionary film that is highly ambitious in its investigation into the nature of evil.

There's a reason why Martin Scorsese admires this film quite a bit.

See it not as a comparison to the orginal but as a film that stands on its own.

Summary: Messy sequel, but still answers questions.
Review: No movie could live up to the volume and sheer impact of "The Exorcist," so one has to have some respect for John Boorman for trying. However, this respect soon dwindles when one realizes that the claustrophobic and moody atmosphere as well as the "documentary-realism" that the original carried seems to have been lost on Boorman. He instead opts for psychotherapy and change in locales to push the idea that Regan was not picked at random for the subject of possession, but was instead victimized because she has the ability to heal. Father Merrin too, it seems, was as much plagued by demons as was Regan. Still, this movie does offer answers to questions about the backgrounds and motivations of the characters that weren't fully explored in the first film for those patient (and cerebral) enough to parse the often wordy, fragmented and obscure dialogue. Original cast members Linda Blair, Max Von Sydow and Kitty Winn return, and are joined by newcomers Richard Burton and Louise Fletcher as they try to get to the bottom of the struggle inside of Regan. This video is recommendable only to those who have seen the first installment and have a hunger--for either carnage or knowledge--that wasn't satiated by the first masterpiece. If, however, you are searching for more psychological terror and genuine seeds of discomfort (something the original provided in abundance), look elsewhere, for you won't find it here.

Summary: "Exorcist II" a Messy Sci-Fi Horror Film
Review: The strangest thing about this picture is that Warner Brothers bothered to release it. It has everything a bomb could ask for: Terrible screenplay, awful editing, bad acting along with horrible direction.

What I find most starnge is that John Boorman could not see the turkey he was creating. And at the time, this was a big budget film. Only Dick Smith's makeup and Ennio Morricone's score are worthy.

There is a possibility that this film could be re-edited and cleaned up a bit for a new video version. But John Boorman would have to rethink the way this picture should be assembled.

Summary: One of the five worst movies ever made.
Review: This turkey had three different endings. The original one had audiences laughing. The one that finally made it into theatrical release merely had them scratching their heads and asking each other, "What was THAT all about?"

It turns out that the sainted Father Merrin actually was a Manichean heretic- a follower of an ancient theological dead-end which rejected the Christian view of the devil as a fallen, rebellious and ultimately doomed angel and saw him as a serious rival of God. Regan was possessed, it seems, because she had the special gift of healing disturbed children. Telling piece of dialogue from the movie:

REGAN: And what's YOUR problem?? CUTE LITTLE GIRL: I'm autistic!

Nothing follows from anything else. James Earl Jones is apparently a witchdoctor with a PhD; Richard Burton is a Catholic priest who apparently lacks Fr. Merrin's talent for charming demons, but does manage to get one to turn into a locust and give him a ride on its back. Good for a laugh. Doesn't deserve the same title as the original.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: It's reputation is worse than the film itself.
Review: Leave off, it's not that bad! Granted, as a sequel to the Exorcist, it goes off in another direction and completely trashes William Peter Blatty's original theological debate, but the end result is a strangely compelling picture. It isn't the disaster everybody makes it out to be, but it isn't a direct remake of the original (which is what everybody wanted). Director John Boorman gives us some stunning and atmospheric shots and the film is divided between America and Africa as Richard burton investigates the death of Father Merrin (Max Von Sydow). The film is a strangely hypnotic "boys own" type affair. A sort of a spiritual adventure. Give it a try.

Summary: Truly, one of the worst...
Review: ...if not THE worst movie. As I was watching this it was hard to come to grips with how far askew a sequel could be. This movie seems little more than a reason to rehash the first movie and it seems the protaginists are simply 'looking for trouble.' Just about the only bright spots in this is the rather gritty, realistic areas that must have been filmed on location, seeing Regan again (not necessarily hearing her), and seeing Louise Fletcher (see Regan). The dialogue here is simply not any good, but the worst part is the story. I'm sorry... WAS there a point to this movie? No, I mean beyond the financial aspect. Didn't think so. This is without a doubt the biggest let down in a sequel ever, but beyond that may be one of the worst movies ever, no, really. Think how the Lost World tainted Jurassic Park, not multipy that by 100.
