Summary: Could have been better
Review: Had all the promise of a better movie but was pooly executed. The end helps a little in theory but makes it worse as well.

To summize - the next day I thought if I were to think about the film again I would find the good part and finally see what I missed. Since I have had no realization it just must be a bad film, or maybe it hasn't hit me yet? If it hasn't hit me by now I guess I don't weant to know.

Summary: SCARY!!!!!!
Review: This movie is freaky! Sam Neill is a insurance fraud investigator who is investigating the dissapperance of a horror book writer. That's where the normal ends, Neill is then taken to the hometown of the writer where all anything weird happens. My advice to anyone wanting to buy this movie is rent it first or borrow it from a friend because not everyone likes it, but i did. It is a good movie but its weird.

Summary: A Potrait Of A World Gone Mad!
Review: "Reality is just what we tell each other it is."
That is the premise of this movie, and an interesting one at that. What happens when the insane outnumber the sane? It's all shown very well in the movie. Loosely based on H.P. Lovecraft' life more than his works. (The rumor about him was that he actually BELIEVED that the things he wrote about were real.) Makes me wonder what would have happened if he was as popular as Stephen King. It's a movie that messes with your head and confronts you with those types of scenarios more than bombard you with gruesome effects and things that jump out at you. Should keep you thinking about reality and fantasy (and the thin line between them) long after you've seen it.

The only bad thing about the DVD is commentary with John Carpenter and the cinematographer (Gary Kibbe). Basically all it has is 95 minutes of John interviewing Gary about the lighting used in each and every scene. Very disappointing and extremely boring with the same questions asked and answered over and over and over....etc.

Summary: Creepy, But Gets Boring After A While!
Review: This movie freaked me out a few times. Mostly the parts with the kid on the bicycle, and the police officer outside of the building, were the scariest parts added. Like the little surprise John Trent gets when he wakes up in a dream, within a dream.

I think the only way I can enjoy this film, is not to watch it for about five more years. Because I get bored of it every time I watch it. That would be the message I am sending to the people who like this movie, too much.

If you haven't seen it, then rent it. It is really creepy. Just don't watch it too often. Oh yeah! another good source for this movie, is the main song. That song is very heavy.

Summary: Excellent plot... Watch out for the rubber
Review: Sam Neil stars in this thought provoking horror thriller about a town gone mad. Neil is an insurance anti-fraud agent that is sent to investigate when a smash hit author by the name of Sutter Cane( Played wonderfully by Jurgen Prochnow) mysteriously goes missing. Journeying to the town, he discovers to his horror that the writings of Sutter Cane actually have some unexplainable evil power that has wrenched its grip on the town. Some unexplainable evil that has started to take over the world, Neil becomes trapped in the town, but eventually escapes. A good film with some amazingly interesting twists and turns, especially at the beggining. All though the special effects are less than up to par, I could forgive it. Some excellent acting and directing.

Review: This is a must-see movie for classic horror movie-goers. This movie has the eerieness and "slimy things in the dark" that John Carpenter usually goes for. Everytime I've watched this movie, (which is a lot), it always seems to make me turn the lights back on. Sam Neil is excellent and makes me wonder "What if?" This is one horror movie that has it all.

Summary: Sick of "Bob" the lighting guy
Review: Alright, this movie is a masterpiece on its own, but the DVD version is awesome! The 5.1 mix is astounding and you get to finally watch it in widescreen! BUT, the commentary track on this particular DVD is horrible. Yes, you get to find out some/few interesting things, but unfortunately "Bob" the lighting guy is with John Carpenter. Through the entire commentary track you have to listen to John make "Bob" feel better/needed by asking him in EVERY scene how they would light this particular scene and/or set. It gets so annoying because by the second or third seen you don't care how he would light the set or what kind of lighting he used. And you can tell John Carpenter is purposely trying to involve "Bob" by ignoring all the cool and interesting facts by letting us all find out about lights. He does this through the WHOLE movie! As much as I love this movie I will never listen to the commentary track again. Be warned: Cool DVD, but LAME commentary track. For shame Mr. Carpenter! Please loose "Bob" the next time you comment on your movies.

Summary: One of Carpenters better works
Review: This movie is definitally not for everyone. IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS portrayed the best from both John Carpenter and writer, Micheal De Luca. They wanted the viewer to be unsure of what was about to happen next, and what was actually going on. They did that well. Almost too well. Throughout the entire movie I was struggling to figure out what was reality and what was only fantasy. Right when I thought I had something figured out, the facts would begin to blur together, and get more confusing, untill I got to the point where I was just as unsure as Sam Neil what was ACTUALLY happening. It was established that there was an "evil". I have no question about that. My question comes in relation to character, Sutter Cane. Was Sutter Cane created by this evil as a plot to retake the world, or was this evil infact, only a fantasy, that an amazingly talanted Sutter Cane gave birth to. That is a question I am not sure that De Luca could answer. Carpenter did bring his usual "creppyness" with him. The scenes where very well done. The whole thing was very dark and mysterious, and some of the townspeople alone (especially the children) where enough to make you a little jumpy in the dark. Overall, I would say it was a pretty good movie. Definitally not one that I would suggest if you are looking for a fast pace, blood and guts, horror movie. IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is actually more of a mess-with-your-mind type movie that a horror. It's one to watch with the girlfriend- She'll be jumping into your arms during the gory scenes, and you'll have something to do in the middle of the movie instead of falling asleep. If you don't have a girlfriend, my suggestion is: get one. But untill then, try to play a little game called "lets see if I can make it through the WHOLE thing without falling asleep." 10 to 1 odds say that you'll fail the first time you try.

Summary: Carpenter Delivers....
Review: If you are in the mood for chills and thrills, John Carpenter really delivers with In the Mouth of Madness.

The film moves quickly and serves up real spine chills along with nice doses of Carpenter's deadpan humor. There is a nice look to the film and the DVD has extensive dialogue between Carpenter and his DP Kibbe if you're interested in that stuff.

Whether or not you find the "explanation" and/or ending for all this nightmare satisfying or not will probably be beside the point....the trip to it has plenty of interest.

A good scare-ride worth taking.
