Summary: Lopez is straining her talents
Review: I think Lopez is a talented actress, to a degree. She isnt near the best but she is good enough to be a leading lady. In recent films, however, she is just going with the momentum of her popularity. She was good in Out of Sight, but since then she hasnt had a decent performance and, by the way, her music is horrible. It is so obvious that the only thing she seems to have going for her is her looks and once that goes, she will be hurting. As for this movie, its awful. I mean, there is not one good scene in the movie. I never once believed any of it and the performances were like something out of an old B horror movie, even though the special effects were stunning. Nowadays, effects simply do not cut it anymore. They mean nothing without a story. If you must see it, rent it. Dont buy it. I noticed that this movie was picked as Roger Eberts film of the year. How sad that is. In my opinion, it is a solid candidate for one of the worst films of the past several years, giving the scope, magnitude and talent involved.

Summary: Vincent D'Onofrio
Review: I thought this movie was utterly boring, and even moreso when I heard some of the director's commentary of his motive behind some of the scenes. Frankly, the only reason I even saw it was to enjoy Vincent D'Onofrio's performance, because he is a very talented actor. If you are an avid D'Onofrio fan then I recommend renting it on DVD and at least watching the scenes he is in. The visual affects were entertaining as well.

Summary: Great for what it was.
Review: Basically what this film is, is a long look at weird and wonderful visual effects, that look like a cross of David Lynch, Salvador Dali and the Matrix creators at their weirdest and best.The premise is weird but actually quite interesting. A serial killer suffers a seizure and lapses into a deep coma, and it's up to a psychologist (Lopez) to use a newly developed method that allows her to delve deep into his psyche and find out where the last girl he abducted is, before she dies. From then on, we see her trudge through the twisted hallways of the depravity of the serial killer's mind. It's a stunning visual feat, but that's all there is to it. Director Singh himself admitted he was more concerned with the visual effects aspect of the story, rather than with the story itself. This film WAS meant to be eye candy, and that's just exactly what it is. There is even a plus side for those who watched this film specifically because of Jennifer Lopez. There are a few scenes where she appears scantily clad which should make the testosterone-raged portion of the audience happy.

Summary: Bizarre but mature
Review: The Cell may have earned a 2½ score from me after I first saw it, but about a week after viewing, I had a strong urge to watch it again. I was intrigued first time round of course and I liked it, but the film has such a strong after-feeling I just couldn't stop thinking about it. So, why I am giving it only 3 stars and not 4 like my friends and critic Roger Ebert? Because the film fades into absolute stupidity in some sequences, and is sometimes just plain bizarre, and that was second time round as well as first. But, this is still a very impressive movie - bold, imaginative and really gripping. The performances are not brilliant, but Tarsem's vision is quite stunning. Technically impressive and upliftingly weird, The Cell is a very strong, but sometimes confused mixture of madness and maturity, that is highly recommended.

Summary: Don't Waste Your Time
Review: Perusing the wall of "New Releases" at Blockbuster Video - and being overwhelmed by the sheer wretchedness of the available inventory, I was forced me to give this video, "The Cell", a try. Hey, my wife likes 'serial killer' movies and, wow, this movie purports to explore the inner psyche of just such a demented character. Later that evening, after my wife and I had muddled through this lousy film, I was inspired to warn my fellow amazoners. This film blows. First, much more than one would expect, this is a conventional, dopey, "FBI guy trying to track down the sadistic, vicious killer" type movie. In this one, our killer likes to videotape his victims drowning in a glass cell and then watch the tape while torturing himself. Eeewww! The twist is Jennifer Lopez, who works in a lab which allows her character to enter the dreams others. When our killer psycho goes catatonic, it is up to Jay Lo to enter his dreams to find out where his latest (soon to be drowned) victim has been hidden. Sound a bit familiar? Actually, there is not a single shred of originality to be found in this film - anywhere. The dream sequences are visually striking but pointless. What do we learn about this vicious murderer? He's actually a cute little boy deep down inside, and if his mean old dad hadn't abused him when he was little (by, among other things, holding his head underwater for too long WHEN HE WAS BEING BAPTIZED), he wouldn't have turned out being such a bad bloke after all. Leave it to Hollywood to turn a baptism into a brutal scene of child abuse. What else does one expect after years of such moronic offensiveness? The performances are just plain tired. Vince Vaughn acts like he can't believe his own lines. Jay Lo, honestly, isn't much of an acting talent - but she is pretty and puts on lavish costumes for the dream sequences. Overall, this one is a "thumbs down."

Summary: Ohhh pretty...
Review: This movie dragged on and on. The only reason I give it the two stars that I do is for the visuals. This is a movie that you can tell was directed by a music video director. This is a man that works entirely in visuals instead of words. However, a movie should be a balance between the two and this one doesn't even come close to balancing those factors. The art direction is the shining achievement of this movie and I'm sure the prop people had a load of fun creating all the freaky stuff you see in all the different locations, especially the horse. THAT'S IT, I'M DONE!

Summary: Pornographic Violence is not entertainment
Review: I hated this movie. I actually had to keep from vomiting while in the theatre. If the violence in this movie was sex, the producers would be in jail. I am horrified that this movie didn't come with a warning about the graphic nature of the film. It wasn't helped by having a story line that has been told over and over and over. It is boring. This film shows what is wrong with America, because there are sick people out there who believe this is entertaining.

Summary: Somebody Should Lock Her in a Cell
Review: First of all, let me say that this movie was "ok" The imagery was excellent and that's what earned 2 out of the 3 stars I gave it. The other star was earned for an interesting "idea" for a plot line. However, this idea was not executed very well. They spent too much time on the imagery and barely any on the plot line. A lot of holes. The acting was pretty good. I think this movie would have gotten 1 more star if Jen took her damn clothes off. Isn't that the point of putting her in a movie? Her looks? it sure as hell isn't for her ..ahm..Talent?
