Summary: Ok, but could have been alot better.
Review: The first time I had watched this movie was when I was about 10 yrs. old. It scared the hell out of me then, but as I got older and read the book, along with did some more research into the REAL story of what happened to George and Kathy Lutz and family in that house, I realized Hollywood would have done far, far better to have just stuck to the facts a little more closely. The Lutz's story as told in their own words, and not in the words of Jay Anson (the author of the book), or American International (the film makers) was far more terrifying. Special effects were terrible to say the least and the age of the film is no excuse. To see what a well made horror film is, see the Exorcist. The special effects were available. Again, the real story is terribly frightening, but it could have been portrayed far more accurately with better results.

Summary: should of been like the book,but still a classic!
Review: It was one of the first movies I had ever saw,so it has a special place in my horror movie heart.No matter how much someone tells me horror movies don't scare them, when I show them this one it makes them uneasy! I think it is a very good horror movie,but it should of been a whole lot better!I just read the book and it is ten times more scary!The movie leaves so much out & don't tell the whole story as it happened.If they would of kept to the book better this film would be an untouchable horror flick!They change a few details for drama, but this took away from the story.forget dramatizing the film,if the book does tell the truth,then what happens in the book is enough to scare you silly! maybe someday they will remake the movie and stick exactly to the book! that would be a dream come true! but anyhow the movie is scary enough to enjoy!

Summary: Scary Little FIlm of The Late 70's
Review: I admit that when this was originally thought to be a true story, I was terrified by this movie. Yet after all this time and with the knowledge that the book was a hoax--I still found this movie to be very scarey. Except for the unecessary--and poorly done--flash-backs of the original murders in the beginning while the realestate agent is showing the house to Kidder and Brolin, this is a very well directed movie. The tiniest subtle things in the beginning leading to less subtle events later on is what makes a horror movie great. Like when after the realestate agent is alone in the kitchen, sorting her contracts after she made the sale: a subtle breeze rustles her papers. She looks around quickly and abruptly packs up her things and leaves. I just wish I could edit out those flashbacks which almost seems like it wasn't the intended work of the director. Oh well, aside from those brief 45 seconds, the rest of the movie is great. Also note Helen Shaver (Poltergiest: the Legacy) in an early role as a psychic. This movie predates the original Poltergeist movie but is much more frightening and with less flash. I would put this on the same level as the original "The Haunting," "The Haunting of Hell House," "Burnt Offerings" "Ghost Story." If you liked those, you will like this. Buy it.

Summary: Still Creepy...after all these years!
Review: Margot Kidder and James Brolin are FANTASTIC in this film! Perhaps the highlight of Mr. Brolin's film career. 2nd only to "Sisters" for Ms. Kidder.I honestly think of this film EVERY TIME I see a fly on a bathroom mirror. Still gives me the creeps! Must See! Must Own! Terrific DVD Transfer.

Summary: About as fun as watching a fly buzz around your face.
Review: James Brolin and Margot Kidder are newly weds who find out their quaint house is...gasp...haunted! Unbelievably boring movie is packed full of laughably silly moments and revelations that make no sense, and Brolin increasingly appears more and more like Charlie Manson throughout the film! This is as bad as haunted house films get.

Summary: Decent Horror Movie
Review: THE AMITYVILLE HORROR is a great movie, but I want to tell you why I wouldn't give it, actually, five stars.
This movie is loosely based on an actual historic event that took place in the small village of Amityville. I had heard some positive reviews of this movie and some not so good.
My aunt bought this movie for me not too long ago, and I watched it and was pleased with it.
The thing is, at times, it is very confusing. And I mean, VERY confusing. The ending is so weird. I had no clue of what happened. James Brolin is chasing Margot Kidder with an axe and then blood pores out of the walls, then she is crying and he is comforting her. It is sooooo weird.
I liked the entire movie except for that. The acting is great, the house is absolutely creepy and the story is good.
But it is hard to make a perfect movie based on a true story.

Summary: An fine ghost supernatural thriller.
Review: The Beautiful, three-storied colonial in Amityville from the State of New York City. It`s seems to be the perfect dream house of George Lutz (James Brolin) and His Wife Kathleen (Margot Kidder) and thier children. Once they move to the house, troubles starts flying and Kathleen finds out a dark secert about the house. Series full of Inexplicable events are happening non-stop. When the local Priest (Rob Steiger) tries to bless the house but the house won`t let him. Cold Winds and Eerie Sounds rages thoughtout the house from the very beginning from it`s meancing eyes glowing from thier barn house, and the very walls of the house with a strange ooze. Now the Lutzes has to face the dangerous reality of the Situation of terror and Destruction, but the house would let the Lutzes leave? Directed by Stuart Rosenberg, the film does have, it`s shares of Creepy Moments and including a share of Campy Moments in this supposedly based on a true story and Based on a Book by Jay Anson. This Film was an High Box Office Hit in 1979. DVD`s has an good non-anamorphic Widescreen (1.85:1) transfer (also in Pan & Scan) with an fine Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono Sound. The Film High-Light is the Creepy Score by Lalo Schifrin, which most of the score was unused for the 1973 Horror Classic:The Exorcist, which he Receive an Oscar Nomination. Grade:B+.

Review: Well I wasn't sure what to expect considering it's an old movie and is now on DVD but needless to say I was happily surprised. I was just as scared watching it as I was the first time I watched it. It's very clear and totally worth the buy. The music still gives me chills sometimes haha!

Review: This movie wasn't that scary. It had its moments but wasn't that great. I had heard how scary is was but now I know it isn't. This is about a couple and their kids who move into a house that years earlier, had murders commited in it. Their isn't much action and the story is good, but they didn't go far with it. Don't waist your time with this. If you want a good haunted house story, see THE CHANGELING.

No this is not based on a true story. The Lutzes made up everything and if you do some research, you'll find that many facts are incorrect. (I.E. They're was no huge snowstorm that year, and the Lutzes never called the police to look around) Under oath in the court of law, George Lutz admited the story was MADE UP by Jay Anson. It is not true. --This text refers to the VHS Tape edition In responce to this yes it was a lie but the murders did actually happen so in affect it is based on a true story.
