Rating: Summary: too far off Review: this is a good movie but not close enough to the book. However i still liked and would say to people they should see it
Rating: Summary: "John Carpenter's Christine" Review: Christine (R) ***/5 Keith Gordon, John Stockwell, Alexandra Paul, Robert Prosky, Harry Dean Stanton. Directed by: John Carpenter. Synopsis: A vengeful car is bought by a young nerd. Special Features: Filmographies. Review: A car with an appetite for vengeance becomes the obsession of a young nerd, but when the car decides to go on a killing rampage for its young master his best friend and girlfriend decide to attack the car with a bulldozer. I did not find this film all too scary. The only thing that saves this film is Carpenter's handling of his material and fantastic performances by all involved, (Especially Gordon who has to change so much through the film, and the always cool Harry Dean Stanton). This film was based on a story by Stephen King. Directing-wise it seemed to be a bit off on movement shots by Carpenter (Could've been my trashy DVD player). He handles the film nicely, and he creates some excellent shots (the flaming car chase sequence). As for the DVD? Only buy if you're a Carpenter or King fan. Note to studio cast/crew bios don't cut it.
Rating: Summary: One sweet ride! Review: Arnie Cunningham's high school career is not going well. His parents are overbearing, his classmates are bullies, his best friend has become a jock, and he has no love life whatsoever. Things soon change however, when Arnie meets the car of his dreams, Christine. The 1958 Plymouth Fury sits in a yard, decaying, as Arnie and Dennis drive by one day. Despite its horrid appearance, Arnie falls instantly in love with the wreck. He buys it off a loony old man, against Dennis's advice, and right away takes it home to meet his parents. They are disgusted by the very idea of Arnie owning ANY car, let alone a wreck, so Arnie is forced to rent a space in a local car garage. In seemingly no time, Arnie has restored Christine to her original appearance! Arnie's appearance is taking on a change however. He is becoming more and more like a 50's greaser, and less and less of a nice guy, and Arnie doesn't let ANYONE talk bad about Christine. Arnie's bad attitude and deadly car with a mind of its own, soon cause him to lose his new girlfriend, the most sought after girl in school, almost as soon as he gets her. His best friend Dennis, though confined to a hospital room most of the time due to a football accident, is starting to notice the negative change in Arnie also. Soon Dennis and Arnie's girlfriend Leigh team-up to take on the car, but it'll be no easy task. Christine is determined to keep her love with Arnie intact, and no one gets between Christine and her man. Christine is a great horror classic, despite differences from the book. I'm starting to think I should recommend people stop reading books, since it only seems to give them a bad attitude towards movies if they are even the slightest bit different. You have to take a film completely on its own merit. This is a great film, with fun and exciting scenes. Oh, I doubt it'll give you nightmares or anything, I mean, c'mon, it's a car, though you may develop an even stronger fear of choking. Christine may not be terrifying, but it's tons of fun! From the intense moments when Arnie goes up against his overly controlling parents, to the school jocks pursuit of the high school sweetheart, to the scenes when Christine runs down the school bullies. The entire film is extremely entertaining and well done, and I especially love the way Christine communicates through old 50's rock songs. Perhaps the only thing I DIDN'T like in the movie was Leigh's line at the end, "We didn't do so hot." Ha. It doesn't seem that big a deal now, but listen for it during the end of the movie...it just kinda ruins everything. Ha ha. But regardless, Christine is a must own DVD.
Rating: Summary: Awesome movie.. but.. Review: I use to think this was a *great* movie until I read the book. The way I look at it is, the movie leaves out about 75% of the story. I don't want to ruin the book *or* movie for anyone but here are a few reasons why you should read the book first.1. The movie focuses more on the car being "possessed". In the book, you will see a much deeper storyline in which Arnie is "possessed" too. 2. They slash crucial parts of the original story to pieces. In the movie, LeBay's brother sells Arnie the car and LeBay himself, is already dead.. which does everything but destroy the original plot. 3. The way Moochie Welch is killed in the movie is just plain *lame* compared to the same scene in the book. 4. Perhaps the biggest letdown is the utterly lame way that Darnell is killed. It's practically a joke in the movie. In the book.. it's gut wrenching terror. 5. The "last drive" sequence with Dennis and Arnie is also very boring. The death of the original story's plot earlier in the movie seen to that. 6. And finally, in the book, there's "ghosts", corpses who drive cars and the many disturbing visions that Dennis has of the car.. including Arnie's "marriage" to it with some interesting guests. Altogether, it's not a *bad* movie. But the plot is destroyed and it's only about half as scary as it was intended to be. This is a much deeper story than the film shows, like many books. I hope this review inspires a few people that have watched the movie to read the book.
Rating: Summary: A Low Octane Thriller Review: This film does not do justice to the book. Many important details were changed and some left out all together. Carpenter abriged many elements of the story that made it scary, such as the nightmares, the car's strange smell, and the lights on the dashboard that seem to turn into eyes. The film manages to be entertaining, but lacks the suspense and emotional impact of the book.
Rating: Summary: One to Outgrow Review: This movie, based upon the Stephen King novel, is about a geek who buys a car which, for no apparent reason, was "evil" even before it came off of the assembly line in the 1950s. As the geek becomes more attached to the car, he becomes increasingly sociopathic. He then uses the car (which only plays oldies from the 1950s on the radio and can reassemble itself whenever it is damaged) to get "revenge". I loved this movie the first time I saw it on late night TV so I was surprised by how boring I found it when I saw it again recently. Of course I was only 13 the first time I watched the movie and could be easily excited by any horror movie with good special effects and lots of swearing. The special effects are still great (and so is the soundtrack), but the plot about highschool bullying and overbearing parents that I used to find interesting now just comes off as one-dimensional and dull. The main character isn't very sympathetic even before he becomes corrupted by the car, so no matter how dislikeable the bullies are, you never feel much sympathy for him either. For your approximately 2 hours of viewing, you get to see a boring geek turn into an egotistical jerk and eventually run down a couple of bullies with his car. None of the good character development that exists in the book carries over into the movie and it fails to build up much suspense. Looking back, this is one of the last watchable movies Carpenter made until his recent rebirth with Vampires. There are far better car movies, Stephen King adaptations (the far better "Dead Zone" came out the same year) and John Carpenter movies than this. Do yourself a favour and get one of those instead.
Rating: Summary: A scary car Review: This film is a story about the car, which has a spirit. It shows well Carpenter¡¯s talent. The plot is simple but interesting story telling, especially the actor who played Christine¡¯s master, his acting was superb. It makes me more interested in this film. The evil car, Christine, there is no origin about this car in this film. However, every owner of this car was dead in the car. Most interesting scene is that broken Christine restore to the original state. In addition, one man who owned this car, becoming been evil, it describes realistically. Anyway, it is worth seeing.
Rating: Summary: In All Honesty!!!!!! Review: This movie really wasn't that great because a whole hour goes by before the car really does anything special. Christine could have had the potential to be a good movie but, it turned out to be kind of, to be frank: BORING!. I won't lie, I liked the part where Christine got revenge on the guys that tore her apart but, as a whole the movie just didn't measure up to my expectations.
Rating: Summary: Good stuff Review: This is not a movie that I ever really wanted to see, but I was at the video store looking for a DVD to hire and everything that I wanted to see was out, so I picked this up and enjoyed every minute of it. The idea of a possessed car is not to my taste, but it is done very well here. It is a shame that there is no commentary track as John Carpenter has done some very entertaining ones such as on VAMPIRES and THE THING. The picture quality on the PAL disc in quite unbelievable considering the age of the film and looks as good as many DVD's of current films and should look almost as good on the NTSC disc. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: A Carpenter Classic Review: This movie's pretty good. For a horror movie. I say that because the movie doesn't have much violence, but it manages to stay thrilling. John Carpenter really did a good job on this one, eventhough some people may not like it, because it is not scary. If you think about it, it is more of a thriller. I wouldn't say this is the best John Carpenter film, but it ranks up in that area. Also the soundtrack. The theme music is very spooky, and the tune is just good to listen to. This film is pretty good.
