Summary: Sure it's ok.
Review: The movie was interesting at best. It did, however, left a few points unclear such as how the gold was recovered at the end, what exactly was that scavenger guy, who was the boss, what was the relation between the minions and the scavenger guy...

Perhaps, watching a couple more times may clear up some of those, but the only thing that really bothered me was the inconsistancy of the body choppings on deck at the begining... how does the old perve, who was dancing with Emily Browning, get part of his head chopped off while everyone else got chopped off at approximately 4 feet... Emily should have been about 5 feet tall with shoes. The old perve's head got chopped at around 6 feetish. HELLO!! 2 feet differential is a little too obvious. Anyway, good thing they did that, because of it were truely convincingly logical, I would not have been able to finish my lunch. First I was horrified, then I laughed (at the technical flaw)... And the rope appeared to be a little too large in diameter to result in a cutting effect such as that presented even with the velocity they tried to convey.

Oh well, whatever. To any other horror movie producers, get a physics degree holder for consulting before doing something like that.

Summary: A Gruesome Apparition of a 'Ship'
Review: The title gives away the whole movie! Spoils! "Ghost Ship" is about a salvage crew who is looking for The Italian luxury liner called Antonia Graza, which has been missing for nearly half a century. A silly man gets spooked by a clock and almost soils his pants. A smart man gets chilled by a sexy woman's voice. And the rest of the crew gets offed one-by-one with the routine horror cliches. Enough said. What was once a heavenly cruise ship, is now the ship of hell. Yes, I said it. Cable wires were very perilous. A double-faced (literally) lounge singer was extremely insidious. So don't eat canned food that's old, it's pure rot. This is not a scary movie, but a fun one.

Summary: Campy, campy, campy!
Review: I didn't think I was expecting all that much from "Ghost Ship." I LIVE for scary movies, and, after a fellow Blockbuster denizen made the recommendation, I and two friends decided to rent this dvd just to get a good scare.

Unfortunately, the thrills and chills in this movie were neither thrilling nor chilling. I don't know how Juliana Margulies or Gabriel Byrne were convinced to do this flick, but it is just the most campy movie I've seen in a long time. The special effects are pure cheese...severed limbs, fake blood, horrible demises for each of the characters...the filmmakers made the gore the central scare tactic, and it makes the whole thing rather boring.

I think the best role is played by the little ghost girl who tries to guide Juliana Margulies away from the evil that eventually takes all of her crew. She is sufficiently creepy and lends some genuity to the story....but that hardly makes up for the rest of the movie.

If you are thinking of even seeing this movie, much less buying it, get ready for a dumbed-down, aquatic version of "The Shining" featuring a bad guy who steals souls. The story is just not compelling at all, the characters are not well-developed (most are killed off before there's even a chance), and the visual effects are pretty blah.

To sum it up: only see this if you're really really really bored and if you only feel like getting "pseudo-scared."

Summary: A pretty good foray into the horror scheme of things.......
Review: It would be a fair assessment by some to label this a garden variety horror picture but it is probably due more credit than that. Instead of moving too fast too early so you can outguess the plot, the opening scene shows an intriguing series of events that leaves your interest piqued about what lies ahead and holds your attention.

Falling away from the standarad locales of haunted houses, cemetaries, etc. of other horror movies, it is nice to see a fresh perspective on an unsettling and unseemingly evil ship. Somewhat straightforward in the cast getting killed one by one (no surprise there) with twists and turns thrown in, the viewer is thrown for a loop later in the movie that is totally unexpected and adds a nice angle to the whole story. The suspense in the movie is well done and there are good special effects to boot. Lastly, the ending has a nice reedeming quality too in that it is not what is expected and gives you a good jolt. So much so that you could almost read a sequel into this first movie.

The DVD itself has a couple of good featurettes, a music video, trailer, and cast and crew biographies. Not a bad deal for the money really. If you're a horror fan and like a decently developed ghost story plot with good intentions, you'll probably be pleased with this film and I do recommend it to everyone.

Summary: Oh! I'm so scared!
Review: Yeah right! It's funny how it says, people who rented Ghost Ship also rented The Ring and Signs. This movie bit all around. I couldn't wait until the whole thing was over so I could actually go in for work Monday morning! Scary movies are hard to come by these days....I've yet to find one that gave me the jolts like The Evil Dead or The Silence of the Lambs. Well, off to bed for some pleasant dreams..that should pretty much sum up how scary the movie was!

Summary: Not Even Worth It!
Review: 'Ghost Ship' is lacking of a good story and good actors. First of all the story is very lame, and doesn't correllate with any of the other mysterious happenings. For example the fact that the Ocean Liner shows up in the Bering Strait holds no signifigance whatsoever. Second of all, the cast really drags. It's made up of unknowns, who seem to be complete amateurs. All the parts that were supposed to scare me actually made me either mad or laugh, because it is a disgrace to any cinematographer. Ultimately, Ghost ship actually deserves -1 star but i can't do that. Don't even bother.

Summary: A good spooky time!
Review: Contrary to some other reviews, I thought this was a good movie! Thoroughly enjoyed it! Not quite the twists of THE OTHERS but still worth the time.

Summary: Nothing New Under the Moon
Review: A first rate and well-known actor will occassionally do a bad movie for a little extra cash. This is the only explanation I can find to justify Gabriel Byrne's performance as the stereotypical old-man-of-the-sea tug boat captian in this less than average horror film. The plot is as worn and tired as the classic Victorian hunted house with the simple twist of geography. In lieu of a turn of the century decaying mansion the film is set primarily in a rusty bucket that was once a transatlantic luxury steam liner. It can be summed up in one sentence. An ocean salvage boat tries to tow an aparently abandoned mystery ship. Canned scares ensue. All the boiler plate cliches of hauntings past are resurrected. The film builds up to the real gore with a few false positives where the salvage crew members flippantly scare each other and rusty floors give way. Yawn. By the time the supernatural beings begin to show themselves the viewer is informed enough of the style and system of the director to see them coming for several minutes. There is the good ghost trying to warn the tug boat crew as they dither about eerily lit halls and cabins. A blood filled swimming pool scene that is a direct lift from the Shining's famous elevator scene. The evil demon whose omnipotence is inexplicabley hit and miss. Trust me, I could go on and on with the holes in this sinker (pun intended). All in all though, the film lacks the psychological build up and tension upon which stories about haunted locations thrive. Consequently, it is forced to make up for this inadequacy with lots of rated P.G. gore accompanied by mechanistic and predicatable "scares". After suffering through 90 minutes of this, the last minute plot twist comes across all the more pathetic. About the only good thing that I can say for the film is that its explanatory 1963 flash back scenes of how the passengers and crew died made me long for a chance to travel back in time four or five decades and dance to the sexy voice of a bucksome Italian chanteuse on the deck of an ocean liner in a swank tux (minus the decaptitation).

Summary: Me like!!
Review: I love the Dark Castle Entertainment movies...ALL OF THEM!!! Yes the movie went from exciting to tedious then back to exciting. The middle was very...Explanitory. But that's ok. It was still gorey and bloody and it still managed to keep me pleased. I bought it and I give it a five.
