Summary: Queen of the Damned Movie review
Review: I just went to see this movie last night (Feb.22,2002). All I can say is I am EXTREMELY disappointed & hurt. I am a HUGE Anne Rice fan & The Vampire Chronicles are my absolute favorite books. Any other die-hard Anne Rice fans will not like this movie either.
They COMPLETELY changed everything about the story. It shouldn't even be called "Queen of the Damned".I'm not going to list everything they changed because that would just take up to much time & space. PLEASE keep in mind that the people who made this movie had total & complete disregard & respect for Anne Rice's book.I know it sounds silly but I feel betrayed & disillusioned by this so called "adaptation".
If you are true Anne Rice fan & totally love her work don't bother with this movie. You will hate it as I do. If you've never read the book I still don't think you'll like it. It's hard to follow without enough background information & frankly you'll be bored & a bit confused by it.Even if you have all the background information you'll still be confused because they changed THE WHOLE STORY! Throughout the whole movie I kept saying to myself, "That's not right.That's all wrong.That doesn't even make sense." Etc. etc. etc.
THE ONLY REASON I GAVE IT 1 STAR IS BECAUSE THERE IS NO 0 STARS OPTION.
MS.Anne Rice, if you are reading this by some chance, PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE DON'T LET ANY MORE OF YOUR WONDERFUL BOOKS BE DEMOLISHED IN THIS MATTER!IF THEY CAN'T DO IT RIGHT, THEY SHOULDN'T DO IT ALL!
In conclusion,I wish I hadn't seen it.Read the book & forget they ever even made the movie.

Summary: DISGRACE!
Review: I would have given it no stars if i could. THIS MOVIE WAS HORRIBLE! I don't now what they did to get Anne's blessing -- gun to her head, tranquilizers, annonymous briefcase of money, alcohol. I walked out of the theatre not even an hour into it! The acting is like in a bad straight to video movie or some pilot episode for a sci-fi show on Fox that is destined to fail. The book's idea/life force/story was raped and slaughtered altogether. Lestat is very annoying and hollow(they make him look simple). Marius is a cartoon charater and nothing like he is in the book(they make him seem evil). David Talbot(and this before he switched bodies for a younger self) is depicted as a sexy, mainstream early 40 year old: in Queen of the Damned he's atleast older than 60. DON'T go to this movie if you are looking for anything deep or any substance; this movie is strictly aimed at the Matrix/Blade/Marilyn Manson/14-17 year old crowd. The whole feeling of the story is ruined with Godsmack or Korn or Linkin Park being blasted every 5 minutes. Even Anne Rice herself stated that Lestat's singing voice is like that of Jim Morrison's: deep, crooning, passionate...and it was all thrown out the window opting for Jonathan Davis, Marilyn Manson and the like to mess it all up take away any taste or integrity Lestat would have had. The dialogue is embarassing, employing campy and empty catch-phrases that any other vampire movie would contain. As for the rest of the vampires in the film they all looked like circus geeks with speech impedements. This movie is desparate, ill-conceived and embarassing to watch. This is a prime example of selling out. I thought the only rewarding thing would be seeing Lena Olin, but after I realized that Lena Olin actually participated in this garbage I then realized it wasn't worth the wading through the movie to see her...so, like I said, I left. Even Interview With The Vampire was done with elegant passion and a rich, dark, seductive atmosphere; Queen Of The Damned is tripe...I'm very angry. *steams and walks away*

Summary: What a good movie!!!
Review: This is an excellent movie! I read the book and gave it one star, that tells you how much I liked the book (shivers). I was highly impressed with the movie. Lestat is bored. There's nothing worse then having immorality, and being bored. Lestat decideds he wanted to be known, and what the brat king, wants, he gets. Well, some vampires are less than thrilled that Lestat is going public about being a vampire. Lestat brought Akasha, the mother of all vampires to life. The Queen is alive, and wants a King....Lestat. What she wants is simple...hell on earth. This movie has it all. The special effects are incredible. The casting was pretty good. Stuart Townsend was pretty good as Lestat. I pictured Lestat of having more of an ego, but he wasn't bad. Aaliyah was wonderful, just wonderful as Akasha, Queen of the vampires. She's ruthless, deadly, violent as she is beautiful. I cant' say enough good things about this movie. If you like vampires, you have to see this movie. You won't be sorry. I'm not that big of an Anne Rice fan, and I had my doubts when I heard this movie was being made. However, have no fear, this is a outstanding movie. See this movie and pay tribute to our Queen.

Summary: 2 1/2 Stars: Lestat as Jim Morrison?
Review: It seems like a natural progression for the vampire Lestat to go public and become a rock star in Michael Rymer's "Queen of the Damned." After all, he is charismatic, handsome, sinewy of body, quick of mind, clarion of voice as portrayed by Stuart Townsend late of "About Adam" and Dublin, Ireland.
But why did the producers decide to over dub Townsend's voice with one that has a definite Transylvanian twang when Lestat is/was a Frenchman? And why use Aaliyah so little in what amounts to basically a cameo as the mother vampire of all vampires, Akasha?
While "resting" in his coffin for a hundred years or so, Lestat decides it's time to get back among the living and make his mark once again...this time as a rock singer : kind of a combination Jim Morrison and Lita Ford.(He says"I've hidden in the shadows for centuries. It's time for a change.") He fondly recalls his time spent with Marius (a dissapated Vincent Perez..the vampire who "outs" him)and his knack for playing the violin. But instead of becoming the next Heifetz he choses to become Marilyn Manson.
But as luck would have it, Lestat gains riches and celebrity, a groovy pad in the Hollywood Hills and as many nubile young blood donors as he can handle...but he still longs for Love and an eternal mate. He thinks maybe it will be Akasha....but is it?
Michael Rymer's pacing of "Queen of the Damned" is deadly: sluggish and at times amateurish which is a pity as his cast is first rate and the basic idea of the film is interesting. Rymer has turned the Anne Rice source material into a soap opera and not a good one at that.
"Interview with the Vampire," with Tom Cruise as Lestat was not a success but "Queen of the Damned" makes it look like a masterwork by comparison. It's obvious that much money was spent on the decor of the movie...more should have been spent on giving the film an all encompassing style and point of view.
And what of the "Talamascans"? An organization whose motto is to "Observe the dark realm but be not of it?" As presented here they are a bad copy of "Buffy the Vampire Killer's" entourage.
This kind of material needs a strong, innovative director/writer and Rymer is simply not up to the task. Where is Roman Polanski when we need him?

Review: Well, QUEEN OF THE DAMNED is finally out in theatres. There was a lot of hype surrounding this movie. QUEEN OF THE DAMNED is based on the book by the same name -- which was written by Ann Rice. QUEEN OF THE DAMED stars Stuart Townsend as Lestat and the late Aaliyah as Akasha. The movie as a whole was pretty average. Aaliayh's performance was excellent as Akasha. She was yet scary and evil. She portrayed the character very well. QUEEN OF THE DAMNED swirls around Lestat's life.. rockstar and all. Akasha comes in about half way through. That was another thing... I thought Aaliyah was gonna be in the entire movie but whatever -- it was still a great performance. QUEEN OF THE DAMED wasn't as deep as INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE but it's still worth checking out.

Summary: Good movie, but should have been a mini-series...
Review: As a fan of Anne Rice, I awaited the premier of "Queen of the Damned" with much anticipation. The first three of Anne Rice's Vampire Cronicles were in my opinion her best work. I liked the movie and Aaliyah was a fantastic choice for the lead! No one could have portrayed Akasha better than her. I don't think it's a teen-ager's movie as some have called it. Lestat is a rock star. The movie does a half decent job of portraying Lestat as a star. I would definately see it again, however don't expect this movie to follow the story line. They leave a lot out and change the story. If they could have showed the audience more of how Akasha is the "core vampire" and why if she died, then all perish - it would have improved the effect of the movie all-together. Lots of plot changes. They should make a mini-series of the story to really get all of the details in. The story deserves more than that.

Summary: It's unanimous: QOTD is a big, smelly dud
Review: It should be obvious, but every single one of the positive reviews here reflects biased speculation by non-critical Anne Rice or Aaliyah fans, none of whom have seen this movie yet. I have read over ten reviews of this adaptation of the Anne Rice novel written by professional movie critics, and they have been uniform in declaring this movie truly bad, deserving the equivalent of about a 1.2/5 rating. What is bad about this movie? 1) The plot. QOTD is by far the worst of Rice's vampire novels (and I've read them all, both the original and the new Vampire Chronicles) and the movie adaptation renders an already illogical and implausible plot altogether confusing and lacking in credibility. There are numerous plot holes and faults here that render the movie somewhat difficult to understand for those who have not read the book. 2) The atmosphere. It's not a scary movie and won't keep anyone on the edge of their seats. The sole method of generating suspense seems to be loud special effects. Rice's novels are not true suspenseful, frightening horror stories (they don't hold a candle to, say, Steven King's The Shining, for fright factor) but they do have interesting and fairly thrilling plots. Not so this movie. It's just not frightening or compelling in any way. Some critics remarked that the special affects and computer generated graphics were kind of cheesy and generic, also (too much of the same scene of Aaliyah, playing Akasha the god-like mother of all vampires, turning her enemies into a ball of flames). 3) The acting. The uniform consensus is that Stuart Townsend is a talentless B-movie (...) (Peter Jackson fired him in the first day or two of shooting the Lord of the Rings series - that foppish waif-boy-man was supposed to play Aragorn???). Aaliyah, for the brief 17 minutes of exposure in this movie (she died before shooting was completed) apparently looks somewhat stunning, but isn't much better of a thespian than Townsend. No one else rises above the level of mediocrity, either. What was good? A few critics liked the dark atmosphere at the beginning of the movie. A few thought some of the special effects were interesting, particularly the computer effects that gave the vampires' skin that tight, smooth sheen that characterizes Rice's vampires. That's about it though. Overall, when one mixes a bad plot, a lack of suspense and bad acting, it's not surprising that the end result is a bad movie. Rice apparently offered to do the screenplay for this movie for free just to avoid the sort of debacle that she felt resulted from the adaptation of her first vampire novel into the Cruise-Pitt-Dunst movie (her introduction to that mediocre movie withdrawing her public criticism of it and "praising" it was totally incredible), but Warner Brothers rejected that offer. Pity, she probably could have helped this movie get at least another star or two of rating.

Summary: LETS GO TO THE MOVIES!
Review: This is better than Christmas Day! I a glad Tom is not in this one, especially after treating Nicole so horribly! I am leaving my two children at home with dad to go to see this movie on opening weekend! The fans of Lestat need to make this film a big box office hit on opening weekend, so that Warner Bro. will continue to make more Lestat films in the future! We love you Anne!
