Summary: Brilliant, and definitely scary!!!
Review: Stanley Kubrick was one of America's greatest film directors, and I consider "The Shining" to be one of his best works! While he didn't exactly stick to Stephen King's book, the finished result remains a great horror flick, with superb performances by Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duval! This one's a winner!

Summary: Kubrick's "The Shining" leaves viewers frozen with terror
Review: 1) Based on the Steven King novel, Stanley Kubrick's version of "The Shining" paralyzes the viewer with horrific imagery that remains in the viewer's mind long after the film's climatic ending. Danny Torrance is the son of Jack Torrance, a recovering alcoholic, school teacher, and aspiring author. Father Torrance agrees to look after the Overlook Hotel for the winter season with his wife and son. The four-year old Danny possesses an innate ability to see the evil that dwells in the snowbound hotel's past and present. What unfolds is a tale of horror and murder that leaves the audience frozen with suspense.

Summary: The most atmospheric, psychological horror movie ever
Review: Stanley Kubrick created an utter masterpiece with this haunting adaptation of Stephen Kings novel (also kings best book I believe). Jack Nicholson plays the perfect psycho, very convivcing (should of won an academy award for this) The cinemotagraphy is classic kubrick, very psychological. I reccomend this video to anyone who wants a good scare.

Summary: A Great Movie!
Review: This is one of the best 'horror' film, in my opinion, ever made. The directing is awesome. The film doesn't have fast moving cameras and some 'teeny bopper' soundtrack trying to cover up for some second rate movie; the Shining moves at a steady pace with a great music score, giving it a creepy, eerie feel. Just the pure size of the hotel, with those long, dark, deserted hallways and the sense of isolation, would make a lot of people freak out! The acting is first rate, with Nicholson giving an Oscar worthy preformance. Definetly worth seeing and owning. A classic! The movie also has nothing to do with Stephen Kings novel of the same name; aside from Kubrick using some of King's characters. Don't expect the two to be anything alike.

Summary: One of kubrick's art pieces.
Review: Some say this is the beginning of the end of the late director's brilliant moviemaking career. The script is obviously weak. King and his books are partly to blame for I think that most of them do not transfer well to the screen. Probably a bad choice on kubrick's part. A bad script put to the screen in an artistic way the way only kubrick could. A masterfully executed movie but the script cannot drive it. Many of the scenes are visually and emotionally neutral for example the 'blood out of the elevator' scenes which fail to arouse terror. The best part is probably the last from the flashback in the ballroom onwards. Despite all this it is worth having and seeing for it is a piece of art like any of kubrick's productions. A five because it is a piece of art.

Summary: Sometimes horrific. Sometimes not.
Review: Jack Torrence axing away the bathroom door to butcher his wife Wendy was scary. Topping it off with the ever popular, "Heeerreee's Johnny!" was an added frightful touch. But this is the only truly suspenseful scene in the film. Will he hack poor Wendy or not? Didn't it ever occur to her to bust the window completely out instead of wasting the time to try to pry it open? The rest of the film plays very slowly, and sometimes a little rough. The rotting woman in the bathtub, Jack discussing his marital problems with the bartender, and Wendy discovering the repeating sentences in Jack's book didn't send a chill up my spine. I thought it played out more like a potent drama, with a touch here and there of gore (blood gushing out the elevator, two girls chopped in a hallway and a smiling man appearing out of nowhere in front of Wendy with a big gash in his head saying, "Great party, isn't it?") The movie stays on track with it's eerie plot but I think it is miscasted as a horror film. We see Jack Torrence slowly losing his mind in the hotel throughout. It's only inevitable he cracks, so the shock value when it finally climaxes is very little. There are alot better classic ghost stories to choose from.

Summary: MUSIC
Review: I'm not going to repeat what pure genius this movie is, but as a corollary to that obvious fact, my first reaction to "The Shining" was how stunning the choice of music was. Most of the music in this movie was concert music written by modern 20th century composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki, Gÿorgy Ligeti, Witold Lutoslawski, etc., all of whom are Eastern European composers, all of whom have personally witnesssed Nazi and Soviet crimes against humanity, which has made their music desperately haunting, as if one were looking into the abyss of human evil and despair. Kubrick, besides being a visual genius, has an unbelievable musical sense, and chooses the music in his movies VERY carefully. The soundtracks to his movies (which often include music by his daughter, Abigail Mead) are just as interesting as the films themselves. Check out the soundtracks to Full Metal Jacket, 2001, etc.

Summary: Chills and thrills to the end!
Review: I love this movie. The first time I saw it as a young child it scared the hell out of me. And now even today as an adult I still become tense at certain parts of the movie. The Shining is truly one of the best moveis ever made!
