Summary: Creepiness is to fright as four is to one
Review: I would much prefer a film be creepy or deeply unsettling than it be merely a shocker or bump-in-the-night frightening. The Shining is an all-time example of excellence where disturbing images and creepiness is concerned. Plus, the music is right on the dead of center. I must agree with the posters who have below complained of the failure of the studio or Kubrick or whomever to see to it that we had the option of viewing a widescreen formatting of the film. Granted, Kubrick did not shoot it with anamorphic lenses and centers his subjects in the frame so consistently that a failure to in any small degree widescreen the movie is not fatal to the enjoyment of the chills. Still, why not let the viewer make the decision? Perhaps the hellacopter shadow noted below is more egregious and on-going in a widescreen presentation. No matter--aces high. me.WIDESCREEN PLEASE!!!!

Summary: One of the worst film adaptations of a King novel.
Review: El Stinko! Hammy Nicholson overshadows a story that was supposed to be about the boy. Not scary, not intelligent. STAY AWAY FROM THIS GROANER. If you want to see a better version of The Shining see the TV four hour version. It blows the movie version away, while this one just blows.

Summary: Good Movie
Review: The Shining,although it's different from Stephen King's Book, is a very good movie. But I think they should of had Jack take longer to go crazy and start with little subtle things Wendy starts to notice before he 'comes out' as a madman. And I think it should have had a 'prologue' scene with the two girls and the mother getting shased around and killed by that first caretaker. It would be nice if they could somehow add a scene with the hedge animals and the hotel expoloding(which is what happened in the book), but its been too long since the original version and all the actors are too old now. And it wouldn't be the ame without Kubrick. The remake does have the hedge animals and the hotel exploding, but it has crappy acting and a real sorry ending where the dad's ghost appears at Danny's graduation. But the original is the one I'm grading, and it is really good. Shelly Duvall is great as Wendy with her screams and frantic running around. Jak Nicholson is creepy, and the hotel is SCARY. FIVE STARS

Summary: In my opinion,it's better than the book!
Review: OK, so it didn't follow the book exactly. Who cares? I saw the movie as a kid and was fascinated by Nicholson's performance. I read King's book later on in high school and it definitely was much more detailed. However, I could not get any kind of feeling from the book compared to the creepiness that I got from the movie. This is definitely one of the best horror films of all time. Then again, it's one of the best films of all time.

Review: When I heard that a Stanley Kubrick box set of DVDs was being relaeased I was very excited. I also heard that all the new editions were supervised and approved by Kubrick himself before his untimely death. Why then is The Shining portion of the set being released full-frame???? Amazon, please, is this a typo?

Review: The Shining is one of my all-time favorite films. One reason I like it so much: It contains the 2 greatest lines in history of film. " HERE'S JOHNNY!" & " I'M NOT GONNA HURT YA. I'M JUST GONNA BASH YER BRAINS IN! BASH 'EM RIGHT THE F*** IN!" And no "the shinning". The greatest parody of the SHINING has to be the Simpsons halloween parody: THE SHINNING. It is really funny! Homer steals the show, some of the parodies include: (shining: all work and no play makes jack a dull boy) {simpsons: No t.v. and no beer makes homer go crazy} (shining: heeerrreee'sss JOHNNY!) {simpsons: here's johnny! DOH!, daavviid letterman! hi david, i'm grampa. DOH!, i'm mike wallace, i'm morley shaffer, and i'm ned bradley, all this and andy rooney tonight on 60 MINUTES! AHHHHHHH!}

Summary: The pinnacle of Horror films, the world over
Review: Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duvall give both powerful and believable performances as Jack and Wendy Torrance respectively. The real star of this film though is the Overlook hotel itself. The most memorable scene for me personally will always be the scene when Jack confronts Wendy and Wendy actually walks backwards up the huge staircase while at the same time defending herself with a baseball bat from Jack. When viewing pay close attention to the scene when Wendy is left in the bathroom after Jack chops down the door. Listen to the sound of the wind as it gives the scene an errie and chilling effect.

Review: I have heard a rumour..that Kubrick intended for this film to be shown on commercial home video in full-frame format however I am still very confused that such a perfectionist who would apparently demand 180 takes for one individual scene would allow a shadow of the camera helicopter to be blantantly seen at the start of the movie.....I am confused. Will someone EVER letterbox this movie?????????? Warners.....ARE YOU LISTENING?????

Summary: Book Adapation a Little Loose
Review: While we wach young Danny walk into room 237, we sometimes seem to forget that not even the room number was kept the same as in the book. Also, the hotel was supposed to be more luxurious than a Motel 6. Sure, the party room was nice, but the hallways and rooms couldn't even have attractive wallpaper. I guess getting Jack N. to do the part of J. Torrence took up most of the budget to spend on Martha Stuart catalogs. But, still, he is a great actor and the movie still puts you on edge. The 1997 version (with Weber and DeMornay) almost follows the book to the letter. It's a toss-up between this and the made-for-tv '97 version, but doesn't make this version thatbad at all.
