Rating: Summary: Good But Not A Horror Movie Review: This movie is not a horror movie in my opinion. It was a good suspense movie and it had a good plot but it was not a horror movie. Jack Nicholson play's his part vary well as the evil killer. The rest of the cast also dose vary well. This movie is not something to watch with someone, to make the movie scarier watch it alone.
Rating: Summary: THE GREATEST FILM OF THE CENTURY! Review: Jack Nicholson gives a great performance as writer and family man Jack Torrence, who becomes crazy and chases his family with an axe. Packed with extremely kinky nudity, sensational suspense, and graphice violence.
Rating: Summary: Classic Kubrick!!! Ignore the 1-star reviews! Review: Perhaps some of the reviewers here are not old enough to remember seeing this one in the theatres, but (un)fortunately I am. While I was a bit dismayed to see this film was NOT in widescreen, my fears were overcome upon the first viewing. It looks as terrific as the first time I saw it!Pan and Scan? I don't see any of it myself. The compositions look beautiful. What ratio was this filmed in? How much can we possible be missing when scenes look perfectly composed (see the interview sequence), and I didn't catch any awkward panning to catch the action. I love widescreen films, but if every non-widescreen film looked this good, perhaps I could live without it!!! It's my understanding that Kubrick wanted this film (and some of the others in the set) exactly the way they appear! As to the extras on the set -- a great trailer! I remember the first time I saw it and it is still creepy to this day (and as far as I know, it was the only trailer). The documentary (finally available!) is fantastic and hilarious, but wouldn't have been awesome to hear some of Kubrick's own thoughts!!! He's almost absent from his documentary! Fascinating scenes and interviews! The documentary alone is worth the price, especially since this is the only depiction of Kubrick at work that we have. Ignore the ignorant and ridiculous carping about this film and buy it!!!
Rating: Summary: A nearly perfect realiztion of King on the screen... Review: Stanley Kubrick's hypnotic, awesomely paced adaptation of Stephen King's THE SHINING is the closest a film has ever come to realizing on screen the effect of King's writing on the reader. Equal parts descriptive hyperbole and eye-popping shock, never has dread been so convincingly portrayed on film as it is here by Kubrick. From the vertiginous opening through the measured scenes of domestic life at the Overlook Hotel, to the exquisitely framed sequences of horror, this adaptation works on every level. This film, along with the original VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED and THE HAUNTING, is one of the most frightening movies ever made, without resorting to the ridiculous gore of latter-day "horror" films. The DVD is beautifully mastered, and the accompanying documentary is illuminating and fascinating in its detail.
Rating: Summary: I love it! Review: I love this film more than any other horror film that I can count on it, and it's most terrify movie over the decade of Nicholson psycopathic performance. I just love to see Nicholson and Shelly duvall act, because I think shelly duvall is good casted in this amazing film, watch this movie winter time.
Rating: Summary: IT was most spectacle NICHOLSON movie over decade.l Review: I really enjoyed this horror film more than any film that I saw last decade.
Rating: Summary: Sensationally scary!!! Review: This Stanley Kubric's masterpiece inspired of the Stephen King's novel is a must-see, Jack Nicholson is perfect in the character of a manager who become crazy in a mountain hotel. Not for young viewers.
Rating: Summary: a classic accomplishment for Kubrick Review: Curiously this DVD does not offer widescreen (an automatic star loss). The "Making Of" featurette is a charming "day-in-the-life" type of documentary filmed and edited by Kubrick's wife. It opens with her following him into his bathroom and then downstairs for filming. Jack is his nuerotic and entertaining self the whole way. Highlights include the little boy saying confidently that he was probably earning "$500.00 or $600.00 dollars", and Kubrick yelling at doe-eyed Shelly Duvall trying desperately to defend the fact that missed her cue. As for the film itself, we've all seen it. Kubrick's signature is lingering shots with haunting music. Mood is his canvas, and it is very attractive. No other S. King film is anywhere near "The Shining" in class and style. Jack Nicholson's most intense roll to date. I suppose Duvall was very effective in that I spend most of the movie wanting to slap the sh*t out of her myself. Another trailer would have been nice because I don't remember this one. It is merely the elevator door blood thing and the title. Anyway, a nice addition to any DVD collection.
Rating: Summary: Good but not great Review: I just bought a DVD player and made "The Shining" one of my first titles. While I am still very impressed by the vast improved picture and sound quality over VHS, I was a bit disappointed that it was in pan and scan format. This is the kind of movie that letterboxing was designed for. "The Making of The Shining" has some interesting highlights but one must wonder why Kubrick himself wasn't interviewed like Nicholsen and Shelley Duvall. I realize that he is a bit reclusive, but did appear on it so he obviously wasn't against being seen on camera.
