Summary: Finally, a scary hollywood horror film.
Review: This movie is a straightforward, old school horror movie. There isn't as much GORE as you'd think. There isn't as much SEX as you'd think. But for old-fashioned scares, this movie DEFINITELY does the trick. And don't turn it off as soon as the credits start either, the REAL ending is only ten seconds away...

Summary: Wrong Ending
Review: (WARNING! Slight Spoiler!)
This movie is awesome. Wondeful setting. Catchy story. Believable characters. Genuine moments of tension. A real sense of fear. True-to-life gore. In your face brutality. . . but the ending bombs. It's been a long time since I was so displeased with the ending of a film. Okay - this medical student is headed to some appointment when his route is blocked by a car accident. He takes a shortcut and hits a car stopped in the middle of the dirt road. A group of teens. Their tire was popped when they hit some "misplaced" barbed wire lying in the road. And that begins your basic "pick them off one at a time" slasher film. But the movie is truly quality material up until the ending. You see the three killers in the film take out everyone they come across on sight. No questions asked. No hesitation whatsoever. But at the end they only kidnap the last girl. Giving the last guy plenty of opportunity to save her. And that was so not in line with the rest of the film. For the most part the movie is setting up to be an all out gore-fest with a satisfying and original unhappy ending. I mean - don't you love it when the bad guys actually win for a change? Just to break the monotony? Well, no dice. The end of the movie becomes something far more watered down. Like they were trying to give the audience what they think the audience wanted. A big, dramatic, heroic finish. I think it's total BS. All of the teens should have died. All of them. And that would have been a pleasing ending. But of course they convieniantly survive where no one else could. And overcome an imposisble situation, by the skin of their teeth. Of course. How Hallmark. How lovely. How totally unrealistic. This one will surely please casual viewers - who adore picture-perfect endings. But if you are a true fan of hardcore horror, don't waste the money. The ending will dissapoint you intensely.

Summary: Stan Winston effects overcome predictable story
Review: Rob Schmidt's "Wrong Turn" is a contemporary horror film which seems to be paying homage to the great low-budget scare flicks of the '70s. Sort of a merging of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Deliverance", "Wrong Turn" manages to deliver a decent amount of scares. This is thanks largely to Stan Winston's excellent makeup effects. Winston's credits include John Carpenter's "The Thing", "Terminator 2", "Jurassic Park", "Predator", and "Aliens". Winston's work is exceptional especially in the villians, a group of mutated, super-human inbred mountain men. These guys make the hicks in "Deliverance" seem almost charming. Surpisingly, "Wrong Turn" does not skimp on the gore. It's far from the goriest movie around, but it provides its share of shocks and is sure to keep the more squeamish members of the audience peeping through their fingers.

The effects here are physical makeup effects, and not computer-generated. I'm sure there were some digital touches, but they're minimal. Consequently, it feels more realistic and brutal than such CG-fests as Final Destination and its sequel. This helps to contribute to the retro-horror feel. However, "Wrong Turn" is far too slick and glossy to be truly retro horror. Horror films should be raw and dirty, not slick and polished. Had it been lower budget and shot on 16-millimeter film, "Wrong Turn" would have been far more effective and creepy. That's my biggest gripe against the film.

The story is predictable from the start. There are really no surprises whatsoever, and it's pretty obvious how things are going to turn out right from the very beginning. Eliza Dushku does a fairly well job in the lead and manages to be more than just the usual "damsel in distress". Desmond Harrington is appealing, but the rest of the cast just feels like expendable extras awaiting their death scenes.

For fans of modern horror, "Wrong Turn" will probably be a safe bet. However, for a truly dazzling and energetic tribute to '70s horror, I highly recommend Rob Zombie's "House of 1000 Corpses".

Summary: Excellent thriller !
Review: Eliza Dushku and Desmond Harrington gave great performances for this surprisingly good slasher thriller. The story is about a group of young people that are stranded deep in the hill of West Virginia and are terrorized by a family of deform in-breed. There are the usuall gore (Chainsaw chopping off limbs, axe slash through victim's head) but good direction by director Rob Schmidt and excellent performances by the principal stars make this movie so enjoyable and exciting, And great make up by Stan Winston make the in-breed looks awfully scary.

The DVD itself is quite good. The Dolby 5.1 is great as director Rob Schmidt points out in his commentary that the effect sound was carefully placed in the surround speakers to make audience more involved in the story. The picture transfer however is just about average. Both Full Screen and Wide screen are provided. Overall this DVD is highly recommended for the genre and it is much better than others such as Scream or I know what you did last summer.

Summary: LOVE THIS MOVIE!
Review: I love this movie, to the point of where there i covered my binder with pictures of it! The movie is original, and thats what I love about it. I mean, the vilans, are not some sort of imortal creature, that can't be killed, like in Friday the 13th, and Holloween, where jason and michael myers, just seem to never die! The vilans in this movie, are disfigured cannabolistic people, who really played the part well. They looked the part, and convinced you of their character. Yes, it does take place in a woodsy area, but the originality, of the vilans, and the plot, is what makes it unique. In your average Slasher film, the vilan just seems to kill the people for self pleasure, yet in 'Wrong Turn' the vilans end up eating the people they kill. It does seem strange on why they collect cars, but they collect the cars of the people they killed. I love the movie, and how it doesn't always take place on "solid ground" How the characters used trees as a method of trying to get away. I love Eliza Dushku to the fullest, and believe that this is a one of a kind horror flick, that deserves your time, and you'll end up loving!

Summary: Eliza
Review: Eliza Dushku running through the woods in a shapely tank top. That alone is worth the purchase price. She is the only reason I bought Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

Summary: wow!
Review: Usually I don't get scared during movies, but this one almost gave me an ulcer. There were times when you knew what was going to happen (like in most movies), but it still scared me! The ending was really good too.

Summary: Lost a star for originality.
Review: I think horror movies today are starting to take the right turn into theaters. "Wrong Turn" involves a young man heading towards Raleigh, NC for a job interview. Coming upon a horrendous traffic jam, backs up, and decides to take the backroads to go around the traffic jam. Happens upon 5 other individuals by crashing into their vehicle; who by the way their vehicle's tires being flattened by barbed wire. Welp, time to go walking and get some help, while two of the 6 kids stay behind. Chaos ensues! GRAPHICALLY! Very bloody!
What appeals to me about this movie, not the originality (where there is some, but not much) is the fact that a movie about psycho cannibalistic in-breeders has not been done since the mid seventies with "The Hills Have Eyes." But Stan Winston and his genius made this film into a disgusting nightmare that it was made out to be. And more applause goes to the sound crew for creating an authentic sound of the cannibals hacking their kill up for supper. Wow, I mean, very real. My head turned when I heard the authentic sound of...(SPOILER!!!)...a saw sawing through skin and bone.
However, this movie turned out to be pretty much what I expected it to be. Plus, it takes place in the daytime. Even more suspenceful. But, one more thing still bothered me. The hint of Steven Seagal type action that normal human beings would not enact in situations like these.

Summary: Derivative or Homage?
Review: Have we seen it all before? Yes! Immediate influences: The Hills Have Eyes, Deliverance, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday The 13th. A stunning return to the horror genre for Eliza Dushku after the dissapointing trite that was Soul Survivors (and even a link to American Beauty).

The beauty of the DVD format is that you can watch titles repeatedly, something unless you wish to spend the bucks can not be done at the movies. You can stop the feature if needed and of course back up to still the picture and get a good load of that gore!

The film has a great transfer and in all opinion if watched on good equipment has a crisper look than its theatrical counterpart. Unfortunately like most modern horrors ( 28 Days Later an exception )the score is crap and not even the great tunes of Q.O.T.S.A can change this. Crap score=crap atmosphere.
Stan Winston is a fantastic makeup artist though more subtle exposure of the hillbillies would have worked greater in Rob Schmidt's favour.

Although watchable, I must ponder whether the intention of the film was to pay homage to its influences or just flat out copy them in a hope the horror craving kids of today have not seen the above mentioned masterpieces. The Faculty was a homage and a great one at that though I feel Wrong Turn is a bit too derivative for its own good even if it does up the gore quite alot.

Worth a watch, even a couple, but definately not the saviour of the slasher genre!
