Summary: Yet Another Stupid Teen Flick
Review: If Tobe Hooper, the brilliant, maverick movie maker who created "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" back in l973, had patented his plot, he would be richer today than Steven Spielberg. Since that powerful work of art was released into theaters, there have been countless rip-offs. "Wrong Turn" is yet one more. You've got the usual dim young kids doing extremely stupid things. The hero of the movie, for reasons only the writer could explain, decides to take a shortcut from the main highway so he can make an important business date. Naturally, he goes into terrain so primitive you expect to see dinosaurs rearing their heads above the forest. Then he crashes into a car full of more idiots. There's one good shock moment--involving a forest ranger who finally drives up in his van--that does really jolt you. The villians are all rip-offs of the original Leatherface. Thankfully, the relentlessly whining, crying, helpless second heroine lead is killed off. It's hard to believe that her two companions would spend so much time mothering and hushing her would risk being killed to treat her like an infant. Give me that good ole TMC--Texas Chainsaw Massacre--that started the whole durn thing.

Summary: Great horror flick!
Review: Just a few days ago I ordered "Wrong Turn" and "The Hills Have Eyes" and finished watching them back to back a few minutes ago. Even though THHE's was very disappointing, "Wrong Turn" was everything I had hoped it would be. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time and I about jumped out of my skin several times...my only complaint is that the movie could have been longer as I did not want it to end! I won't go into what the movie is about as I am sure others have already done that. I would just like to say that this is a horror flick all fans of the genre should have. It left me wondering why I just learned about the movie last week. Did it not make it to the theaters? hmmm...anyway, get it. You won't be disappointed...oh, and don't pay any attention to those who may give this movie a negative review. I have watched most of the horror flicks produced and this one has moved into my top 20 horror list of all time. It is that good.

Summary: Wow, great horror movie! Finally!
Review: This was a great horror flick, with classic potential! In today's horror genre with it's utterly idiotic offerings such as "Scream", and "Urban Legends", it's refreshing to see a truly scary horror flick with a good storyline, a tight cast, great FX and great direction.
"Wrong Turn" is a return to the legendary cult horror flicks of the 70s such as "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Deliverence". It's got that 70's feel to the filming and offers a bunch of fantastic scares and some terrifying situations!
It's a tale of a group of teens that happen upon a family of murderous inbreds in West Virginia.
Sam Winston produced this, and I think, did a great job. I look forward to see what he comes up with next.
For diehard horror fans, this is one for the collection!

Summary: The best canibal film since The Texas Chainsaw Massacre!
Review: Any people who dis this film don't know CRAP about horror movies! This is the best horror movie of 2003! It starts out with a guy named Chris (Desmond Harrington) trying to take to a detour to get to a meeting. On the way he crashes into a truck full of six college kids in the middle on the road. Both of their cars are totalled so 4 of them go for help while the other 2 stay behind. Of course the 2 that stayed behind are minor characters and the 4 who went are the main characters.You know what's gonna happen.Soon after the 4 kids find the canibal's cabin and each stumble upon something gross. As they try to leave the canibals arive and bring in one of the 2 friends they left behind for supper! It's a great action packed movie with awsome effects, likable characters and very cool death scenes! It stars Desmond Harrington,Eliza Dusku,Emanuelle Chriqui,Jeremy Sisco,Lindy Booth and Kevin Zegers.The best scene is when the 3 remaining friends have to jump 20 feet into a big tree from a watch tower.If you liked Texas Chainsaw Massacre you will love this!

Summary: Another Mediocre Mass Market Horror Film
Review: This one is a disappointment. I was looking forward to a modern variation on the atypical "teens lost in the woods" film popularized in the 1970s. Instead, the film turned out to be another "assembly line" horror film consistant with much of what Hollywood is turning out these days with regard to horror films. The acting is competent, the story is a standard cookie-cutter trek through the woods with a bunch of terrorized kids. Nothing original here -- and no surprises, although the make-up by Stan Winston is noteworthy. I wouldn't recommend this as anything more, than probably a rental on a night when there isn't anything better on the tube.

Summary: Throwback to the '70's
Review: Rob Schmidt's Wrong Turn is a throwback to the mindless horror films of the 1970's. This in itself is not all bad. This movie pays homage to the lost in the woods horror films of that era and borrows quite freely from films like The Hills Have Eyes, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Deliverance. This is not thinking man's horror this is the action packed blood and guts slasher film that is made to get the adrenaline pumping. The plot is simple enough: after a set up car crash on a deserted highway three couples are randomly picked off by cannabalistic mountain men. The question simply becomes one of who will die in what order. It is good to see a film that does not rely so heavily on CGI that the viewer actually understands that there is some acting going on in the film. Not great acting but acting nevertheless. The highlight of the film is the great makeup job done by Academy Award winner and producer Stan Winston on the mountain men that prey on the young travelers. The acting as mentioned is fair and the plot is mindless. But the gross out factor is high. The DVD contains both the widescreen and standard formats. The extras are on the slim side. There are four very short featurettes on the making of the film which boil down to little more than publicity pieces. The commentary is of the throwaway sort with lots of empty space and little real technical information. This is a rental film all the way around unless you are a big fan of the genre. All in all mindless fun. Don't get lost in the woods.

Summary: Don't understand why it wasn't a success!
Review: When you look back over the past eight years you'll notice that horror movies have taken some interesting turns. From 1996 - 2000 horror movies were all about a guy in a mask murdering stupid teenagers. (Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend) Then from 2000 - 2003 it was all about the supernatural side to horror. (Darkness Falls, The Ring, Ghost Ship) There was no classic horror movies created! But now a classic horror has arrived. Six people are stranded in the West Virginian woodlands when they're cars are ambushed by a strand of barbed wire placed by three inbred mountain men. Soon the friends are picked off one by one until only a small amount are left. Will they be able to survive the seemingly unkillable mountain men? The film may be a little too like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre but so what? The cast are excellent. Eliza Dushku is perfect as the heroine and it's actually kind of strange to hear her scream after watching her play the tough-as-nails slayer in Buffy! Desmond Harrington is also good as the lead man but he didn't have to look so moody all the time! The other characters are great especially Emmanuelle Chriqui. I thought she was a brilliant actress! I also liked Lindy Booth. I thought she played her character extremely well. To be honest Jeremy Sisto and Kevin Zegers were also great so all in all the main cast are all fantastic. Well done to the casting director! The film has some really gory moments (barbed wire in mouth, arrow in eye, axe in head) which are very original! The mountain men look so real all the time and there is never a moment when you can say "Oh that is so fake!" which is good. The ending is clever and I hope they do make a sequel. I would only make a sequel though if Eliza Dushku and Desmond Harrington returned. If only for a brief period they would have to return. I think if this film were a PG-13 it would've got to number one! Because come on! Mostly teenagers go to see horror flicks and if a film is rated R you're not gonna go to the cinema with your parents if you're under 17 are you! If Darkness Falls had been an R I doubt it would've got to number one. All in all a great film that didn't get the praise it deserved. Maybe a Wrong Turn 2 can correct it all though!

Summary: ANOTHER WASTED OPPORTUNITY
Review: Good concept. Good cast. Good scares. Good suspense. That being said, the good things about Wrong Turn are outweighed by the wasted opportunities to be unique. Instead, Wrong Turn falls into the realm of typical, forgettable, predictable movies that are being mass produced these days. It doesn't take any chances, it doesn't do anything different and it doesn't leave a lasting impression. The movie builds up into something that is gonna be cool, scary and unique, but eventually you realize that... nope... same old movie, different actors. Another movie that didn't have the guts to break the mold and thus is just ordinary.

Summary: A backwoods slasher film dragged down by bad directing
Review: Having watched "Jeepers Creepers" last week, a horror film with an awesome opening that disappointingly does not follow up on its promise, it was even more depressing to watch "Wrong Turn," a 2003 offering that has one of the least inspiring opening sequences ever. A comely young couple are out in the woods of West Virginia doing some rock climbing when they are basically butchered off camera by unseen forces. But any notion of mystery regarding who dunnit it is quickly dispelled by the film's credit sequences, which offers clippings and photographs about the problems of inbreeding and the legends of the backwoodsmen hiding out there in the forest. By the end of the title credits the only question is how many of these crazy guys are out there in the woods and what specific genetic deformities do they have? Do not worry, I will not spoil what limited amount of fun there is to have here by telling you the answers. However, before those questions can be answered we have to meet the young folk fated to die horrible deaths. Chris Finn (Desmond Harrington) is late for an appointment and ends up on a dirt road going through them thar backhills. After an abrupt encounter with a stalled SUV he meets up with the rest of the menu offerings: the hot to trot Evan (Kevin Zegers) and Francine (Lindy Booth), the happy couple Scott (Jeremy Sisto) and Carly (Emmanuelle Chriqui), and the buffed but recently dumped Jessie (Eliza Dushku). The group separates in an effort to find help and to make it easy for the first of them to die while the rest of the party finds the proverbial shack in the woods, which will get them up to speed on the danger they are facing. Fortunately Chris is a medical student, so whether he is looking at road kill or opening up containers in a backwoods refrigerator, he can identify the sort of animal involved. Screenwriter Alan B. McElroy's idea of grossly disfigured mountain men hunting down young folks is a good enough idea for a slasher flick, although coming up with the cinematic in-breeding of "Wrong Turn" (cross basically any slasher film tha comes to mind with "Deliverance") is a bit diverting since you do not want to be repeatedly distracted during a film by remembering where you have seen similar things before (one episode of "The X-Files" kept coming to mind for me). But director Rob Schmidt manages to make less out of the material on the screen than what appeared on the printed page. The signature sequence in "Wrong Turn" is basically a single shot of an axe wedged into a tree (believe me, you will know it when you see it), but most of what should have been harrowing scenes of horror (e.g., the couple underneath the bed) just do not come off the way they should. Usually when I watch a film I find myself focusing on how a script could have been improved, but this time around I spent most of the time taking the director to task. For some reason I was hoping that the presence of Dushku and Sisto, who have enjoyed major supporting roles on two of the best televison series of the past decade in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Six Feet Under," was a sign that "Wrong Turn" was at least an above average slasher flick. Maybe I am once again guilty of inflated expectations, but the results were very disappointing, because if this is just an average example of the genre that is an even more depressing conclusion. The deleted scenes included on the DVD just provide additional nails in the coffin since watching your friends being butchered does not strike me as erotic and dailies of an actress being garotted with barbed wire is not exactly worthwhile.
