Summary: The best haunted house movie ever made.
Review: I would have to rate "The Haunting" as the best haunted house movie ever made. Since there are no visual effects (blood and guts), the imagination responds to the horrifying sound effects. The director, Wise, incorporates Ealanor's statement about seeing things out of the corner of the eye with visual hints of the supernatural out of the corner of the camera's eye. Check out the face in the woodwork during the bedroom scene. A must for horror movie fans. The house is beautiful, I wish I lived there!

Summary: The BEST
Review: On a stormy Saturday night, crawl in bed, lights turned out, blankets pulled tight and be prepared to be scared to death. After many years and way too many viewings, The Haunting still gets me every time. There are several moments in the film that make the hair stand up on the back of my neck even though I could quote the lines by heart.

Enjoy!

Summary: Prepare to scream!!!
Review: I saw this when it came out in'63...I was 15 and, after having lived through "Frankenstein," and "The Mummy," at a younger age, I assumed I could handle anything....until I saw this!!! I watched it from behind a popcorn box, and almost ran out of the theatre screaming because of the horrible, eerie noises!! And here I am, 35 years later, still unable to watch it by myself. No blood and guts, this one..just sheer terror!!! Grab a friend, turn off the lights, turn up the TV, and get ready to freak out!!! The only other movie I have watched of this genre that has scared me almost as much is "The Changeling," with George C. Scott. Worth checking out.Annie

Summary: Great movie based on a great book.
Review: Excellent adaptation of Shirley Jackson novel. I've seen this movie a dozen times and always find something new in it. The cast is nearly perfect.

Summary: one of a short list of the best horror films of all time
Review: The film eerily follows the book almost verbatim. Shirley Jackson and later Robert Wise created a masterpiece of psychological horror never matched. All is accomplished sans crudity. From the moment you cast your eyes upon Hill House you are under it's spell. A must-have for your library.

Summary: Definitely one of the all-time great modern horror films
Review: Even when "The Haunting" is given one of its rare TV showings, I still can't watch alone, and I'm spooked to the point that I can't sleep that night. Psychologically, the images stay with you, and certainly after all these years it remains one of the strongest tales of ghosts and possessed houses that has ever been filmed. It shows how poor today's so-called horror films are in comparison. I dare you to watch in the dark!

Summary: THE MOST FRIGHTENING OF FILMS
Review: After all these years, I still think "The Haunting" is the most frightening of films..I still remember many scenes and can not watch it again...I had nightmares for years. I wouldn't even let my husband bring a copy into the house. The movie really made an impression on a 13 year old

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: It is the quintessential haunting film.
Review: This movie (especially the first time you see it) is hard to sit through because it is so intense. It is definitely NOT of the blood and guts genre -- it has a great deal of class as a horror film. The actors and actresses in this film are extremely well-cast. Julie Harris makes you feel she is on the edge, and Claire Bloom will make you believe in ESP! Lots of fun if you like a good scare!

Summary: Still a hell of a good scare
Review: This still packs a psychological wallop after all these years. The direction and cinematography are first rate. It scared me stiff when I was a kid and somehow the images of 'Hill House' have remained in my mind. A wonderful, spooky film that lets your imagination run wild....and that's a far scarier scenario than you might imagine.

Summary: What's a horror film without buckets of blood?
Review: Think you need impaled torsos, chainsawed limbs, or hatcheted heads to be scared? Then pop this puppy into the VCR, turn out the lights, and hunker down for the scariest device of all: your imagination. And if you're really brave, watch it alone.

It's hard to believe this is directed by the same man who brought us The Sound of Music. The Haunting moves over you like graveyard fog, and achieves its eerie affect from the simple use of sound and shadow, angle and light.

One realizes that The Haunting isn't just playing tricks on the minds of the excellent cast, but on the viewer's as well.

Most other so-called "scary" films pale in comparison to this, yes, masterpiece.
