Summary: Classic of the ghost/supernatural genre
Review: One of the few, if only, ghost movies I'd want in my video collection. Robert Wise did a truly skillful job of putting onto celluoid the subject of haunted houses and ghosts. Only a few tiny snippets of weak/corny dialogue or scenes in the entire movie, which make the film a thousand times better than the stereotypical spook movie that is overdone and cornball to the 10th degree. I can understand why Wise considers "The Haunting" one of his favorite works.

Summary: An all-around excellent movie...
Review: Although it didn't incorporate a few incidences from the book(i.e. the 'blood' in Theodora's bedroom, Eleanor and Theodora's abrupt personality changes/mood swings)this movie still had a few of it's own original tricks up it's sleeves... You start your journey of absolute terror once you see the untimely deaths of Hugh Crain's several wives(with absolutely no gore at all), and it finally ends at the slightly edited, slightly more satisfying than the book ending, but even then I woke up at 4 AM in the total darkness after having a nightmare about Hill House only to find the bulb in my nightstand light to burnt out... It took me gallons of courage to get up, dash to the bathroom and turn on the light...

This movie is, by no doubt, scarier than the book, however the book has more scary elements which I wish Robert Wise put in the film... I would have loved to see the part where Eleanor decides to have a little stroll through the house whilst the rest of the cast are sleeping...

Anyways, I warn you now, if you intend to see the movie AND read the book if you already haven't, watch the movie first! Otherwise you'll be VERY disappointed... But don't get me wrong! This is a must see!

Summary: The best film I've seen which was adapted from a great book
Review: I saw this film about 7 years ago on encore and absolutely loved it(I will be 17 on tuesday). I cannot wait for the remake to come out in late July. I strongly reccomend reading the book The Haunting of Hill House by Shirely Jackson(if you haven't already)it is a great book and was an even better movie.

Summary: Scared the chickens outta me!!!
Review: What can I say?! This movie is no small fry, showing us the truth about scary movies. No blood and guts needed, just the tension is enough to get you! My boyfriend and I watched this movie together a couple nights ago (after ordering it via amazon.com--- we couldn't find it anywhere else) and let me tell you-- I really think he was more scared than he wants to admit! Poor Eleanore......

Summary: A true masterpiece of horror
Review: This is the way horror movies should be made. Truly terrifying, and no blood or gore in sight--only sound fx, lighting, the best cast imaginable, and that genius Robert Wise directing it all. I first saw this on network tv complete with commercials and in a room full of chattering family members, and it *still* scared me to death. The greatest haunted house movie ever made--no kidding!

Summary: The finest example of gothic horror film making ever.
Review: First viewed hiding beneath a blanket when I was eight years old, this is THE horror film that most lurks in the memory. Hopefully, MGM video will release the more adult version released to television originally. However, it still proves to be the most delicious scare of the genre. Robert Wise ironically directed "The Haunting" in between his work on "West Side Story" and "The Sound of Music". It would not do the film justice to reveal a shred of detail from the plot. Simply sit back - with the light off and curtains drawn - and be taken on a memorable journey.

Summary: A Brilliant Thriller-A MUST SEE!
Review: I don't remember exactly when I first saw "The Haunting" but I do remember how it made me feel. Scared to be in a dark room alone! As other reviewers have stated here, you can see it a dozen times and still be scared out of your wits. This is truly a masterpiece of the genre. Robert Wise, the film's director, uses unusual camera angles, an eerie musical score and sound effects to achieve the perfect mood. Not to mention the wondrous script and actors. Unlike movies of today, it does not rely on gore. I saw a production of "The Gin Game" in NYC with Julie Harris and Charles Durnning. I waited at the stage door to get their autographs. Out of all the work Julie Harris has done all I could think of was "The Haunting" to ask her about. I told her how much I enjoyed the film and asked how was it making such a scary movie. All she said was "It was fun". Well there you have it. You too will have a fun and creepy time enjoying her marvelous performance. Please make an effort to see it and share Hill House with your friends and/or relatives. You all will have a great time you won't soon forget. Hey, it's not just for Holloween!

Summary: Scared the hell out of me!
Review: The best horror movie ever made. No contest. Being a gen-Xer, I was brought up watching slasher flicks and thinking this was horror. I discovered the book -The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson and loved it, and then was overjoyed to find it was also a great film, by legendary director Robert Wise no less! Every thing is perfect from the performances, set design , creepy score etc. This is still the only movie that Im scared to watch alone in a dark room. Don't let the G rating fool you, this is intense stuff! I hear a remake is in the works, but there is no way this film can be improved upon. Please don't it. Cherish this film!
