Summary: What's Love Got to Do With It?
Review: Wong Kar-Wai is possibly the most influential Asian post-modern film maker of the 1990's. His "Chungking Express" is a true masterpiece of film making, and "Happy Together" is a visually stunning work that explores the typically depressing topics of love, loss, betrayal and regret in a dystopian setting. The intermingling of languages is fascinating and makes the cinematography more relevant. Symbolism through repetitive images runs rampant through out the film, though one is left wondering what many represent, if anything. A dark film that leaves you wanting more!

Review: Wong Kar-Wai's HAPPY TOGETHER is considered by more than a few critics to be an important recent "art" film (sorry, Mr. Maltin). The movie is best appreciated on the big screen but video enthusiasts should enjoy it nonetheless. The plot is certainly overshadowed by the images, but that's the point. The film is a road-movie which follows two Chinese lovers trying to resuscitate their dying relationship via a vacation in Argentina (NOT Brazil, as another online reviewer remembers). The movie is predominantly in Chinese (Mandarin?), with a bit of Spanish provided by the Argentine extras. The film IS subtitled, in English. If you like foreign films, you MUST see this film. If you are unfamiliar with foreign films, try something less challenging first, THEN see HAPPY TOGETHER. Why? It's a truly unique film that you haven't seen before. The visuals are truly luscious! Wong Kar-Wai -- with cinematographer Chris Doyle (who recently shot PSYCHO for Gus Van Sant)-- has created some beautiful pictures. It is a great example of late 20th century international cinema. See it already, you Philistines!

Summary: Stunning visuals for this fresh-take on romance.
Review: Yes, we all know the story of on-again-off-again romance. But, this fresh take by Wong Kar-wai on romance comes alive, transposed to the dark tango salons of Buenos Aires. The ups and downs of a Hong Kong couple (gay), is hypnotically filmed by cinematographer Doyle. A landmark in both Wong's and Doyle's careers. The tension in the couple is all the more compelling as they find themselves caught in a foreign world.
