Summary: Karen Black is Back!
Review: "Red Dirt" was a poetic reflection of life in the American rural South. For Karen Black it was a role that was reminiscent of Geraldine Page in "A Trip to Bountiful." If you love Karen Black, then you will adore her here. And if you are unaware of her talent, there is no greater place to discover it. How unfortunate that we don't see more films like this that move to a different pace and don't strive to live up to stale stereotypes.

Summary: Hot, sweaty country boys... what more could you want?
Review: I just rented this movie and it was HOT!!! The two guys in the movie are gorgeous, and we get to see them discover the passion of gay love in an intolerant land. Seeing this movie made me remember the sweetness of my first homosexual experience... and what a memory to revisit! I loved Red Dirt and rate it among the best tales of gay love ever captured on film.

Summary: Impressive and moving film making
Review: The story of a young man and his coming of age - but not in the usual sense. The main character, Griffith, comes to know who he is and what his place in the world is. While the film is visually compelling it is also well written with realistic characters.

The story opens with Griffith and his cousin Emily both dreaming of different paths in their lives. He longs to escape the small town they grew up in and she can't ever see herself ever leaving. Just under the surface there's a sense of desperation in Griffith and Emily - but it takes the arrival of a stranger to bring this out. Karen Black plays Griffith's invalid aunt - a woman haunted by her hidden past and her agoraphobia. As the story develops, the film manages to portray an wonderfully uneasy balance that most films lack - the overall sense of isolation and need to escape with the soul deep bond between Griffith and the land. The ending is anything but pat, leaving open the paths the characters will walk - but is very moving.

By the end of the film, I really felt as if these were real people with real problems - not just hollywood cardboard cutouts. I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend "Red Dirt" as a film that will stand up to the test of time.

Summary: Worth your time, money, and emotions
Review: This movie will leave an imprint on your mind similar to the stain left by walking barefoot on the soil of many southern states. I was glad to see that this film was not full of sex and nudity that is easily found in other movies if that is what you're looking for. You will be pleasantly surprised by the involved soundtrack and stunning cinematography, but the real story here is what shines through and makes you want to watch it over and over. The cast performances by all of the main characters are absolutely amazing. There are tears and there is absolute joy, along with a lot of raw human emotion that isn't over dramatized or out of a bottle. I whole heartedly recommend this story if you would like a gay drama that is more than a few guys walking around in front of a camera making out. I rented this movie and within the first few minutes of the film, I knew it was one I would want to purchase to keep and watch. The story unfolds on so many levels - it gives me the same feeling felt when reading a very well written book, with vivid imagery, characters so real you feel like you're them, and a story that you'll catch yourself thinking back to. Get it - for this price you'd be a fool not to. I can't wait to see what the director comes out with next (this is his first feature length film! amazing!)

Summary: Disappointing
Review: It feels as if this storey goes nowhere.

Acting is quite good and the guys are not too bad looking either.
I suppose its possible to edit this whole film to fit into 10 minutes without losing any story lines.
I was looking for more in this film, I didn't find any value in Red Dirt therefore mine is up for sale.

Summary: Touching
Review: No clubing, drag Queens or getting high here, but a lot of emotions. One of the best films I've seen.

Summary: Just... A... Little... Slow... and Incomplet.....
Review: It appears most reviewer either loved "Red Dirt" or hated it. I certainly wish I'd liked it better. The cinematography is gorgeous (as everyone agrees); I'm okay with the acting; the script, however, slowly, ponderously, goes nowhere--which is the point of this film, I suppose. I recommend renting this film if you're hankering to experience vicariously the life of a young, bored, gay man (but not out to himself or anyone) trapped by circumstances and a dysfunctional, immediate family to continue in an empty, unfulfilled existence in the deep South, rather than take some chances, make some changes and move on.

Summary: No hunky go-go boys
Review: This film is not for everybody. If you are an urban or suburban Gay and you're looking for a movie full of characters and settings that are comfortably familiar to your own big-city gay-bar milieu, you won't find that here. On the other hand, if you've ever lived in the South, or in any rural area where time moves slower and "character" describes more what is within a person than their outward dress or affectations, you will find this very believable, and you will be impressed by the rich, colorful, and authentic people and events in this movie.

No, it's not a "hilarious, predictable, deliriously romantic and sexy feel-good" movie like "I Think I Do."

No, it doesn't have any "aspiring Broadway songwriters" or "hunky go-go boys" or "acidic, motor-mouthed drag queens" like the movie "Trick."

What it does have, as another reviewer here has said, is "profound and multi-layered story-telling at its finest." It's a deeply touching story, with stunning cinematography and amazing cast performances.

Summary: Beautiful, but ugly.
Review: As a gay man who grew up in Mississippi (actually not far from where this movie was filmed), I was very offended by this movie. First of all, I hate movies where the southern accents are over the top and exagerated. A note to anyone reading this review who may or may not watch this film: while people in the south do have accents, they DO NOT sound anything like the one in this movie. Second, the entire subplot involving the love affair between the cousins did nothing but influence old 'southern stereotypes'. I am giving this movie one star because of those two problems alone.
Now I will say something nice about the movie. The camera work is lush and the scenery beautiful. This is an independent film, but you can tell that no expense was spared when it came to the production values. Even the background noise (crickets, cicadias) was amazing. I live in Manhattan now, so I am accustomed to hearing traffic and car alarms. It was nice to hear the sounds of my childhood captured so beautifully.

Summary: this is *not* a gay film
Review: ------------------
PROs
------------------
1) The scenery is pretty.
2) There are some creative nature shots (of flowers and rainy scenes).
3) Griffith is cute.
4) There is not much sex (there tends to be too much sex in gay movies).

------------------
CONs
------------------
1) It's *not* a gay movie.
2) The movie has numerous slow parts that drag.
3) Enough of the crazy mom/aunt!
4) It would have been nice to see more relationship development between Griffith and Lee (not necessarily sex).
5) Did I mention that the movie drags?
6) Too much, long, drawn-out drama with the mom/aunt.

------------------
Movie Summary
------------------
This is *not* a gay film! It's about a lonely guy on a farm. He has sex with his female cousin because he is bored. He takes care of his crazy aunt/mom who has never recovered from the death of her sister and brother-in-law (which she caused by sleeping with him and then they got into a car wreck when everybody found out about it). Griffith rents a cottage. A drifter named Lee "rents" it (works on the farm to cover cost of rent). Lee is gay (but straight acting); he falls in love with Griffith, but does not express his love outside of a roommate and best friend relationship. They both plan to leave the farm to escape the cousin and crazy mom/aunt. Just before they leave, Lee tells Griffith that he is in love with him. Griffith is shocked (and so was I) because he always thought they were just good buddies (which they were). They have a short fight. Lee leaves. Then Lee comes back to apologize for some things he said during the fight. Griffith (a little confused and still dazed) embraces Lee and gives him a kiss. Lee leaves and Griffith stays at the farm, forever destined to care for his crazy mom/aunt.

------------------
The Bottom Line
------------------
There just isn't anything gay about it! (except Lee) Griffith was just a lonely guy on a farm who needed some male companionship (and there's nothing wrong with that...he didn't need nor did he want gay companionship).
