Summary: Heart breaking, respectful and a MUST SEE!!!!
Review: "Soldier's Girl" is an example of the important and well made movies that cable tv is capable of producing. This film, based on the murder of Barry Winchell, is a testament to good film making, good direction and incredible acting. This could have been a movie that focused on the sensationalism of the subject matter but the director made this into a respectful and heart breaking love story.

The story is about a young man based at Fort Cambell, Kentucky, and the harrassment he suffers from those in his barracks over a relationship he begins with a transgendered performer named Calpernia. After meeting her at a club in Nashville, Tennessee, the young private becomes smitten and falls in love, a decision that ultimately leads to his mistreatment by other soldiers and eventually his death.

Troy Garity gives a dignified performance and deserved the attention and the award nominations he received for this role. Lee Pace also does well in his role as Calpernia, the transgendered woman that Barry falls in love with. Shawn Hatosy plays Justin, the young man who sets all the tragic events in emotion. He is a disturbed young man, with a drinking and drug problem with prejudices that he cannot get past.

The dvd also features interviews with the actors as well as the real Calpernia and the mother of victim, Barry Winchell. The dvd is a good dvd overall but it is the film and its message of love and accepting people as they are that is the most important aspect you should take away from this movie. I highly recommend this film. I will be adding it to my dvd collection!

Summary: Thank You
Review: * I'd like to say a special thank you to everyone involved in making this movie. It is the story of my relationship with PFC Barry Winchell and they did an incredible job. Lee Pace brought a real vulnerability and grace to the part of Calpernia. Troy Garity is brilliant and heartbreaking as Barry. The movie is very realistic and much of the dialogue is taken from real life and actual quotes. This story is all true and from the many, many emails I have received I know it has touched the lives and hearts of people across the nation.

Summary: Pure love has no bounds
Review: Exquisite in it's own right. This was your classic portrayal of a closeted "Bunk" mate acting out his transgressions thus sealing the demise of the main character.

It proves to show that love has no boundaries and what lengths people would go to preserve that boundless love.

A very compelling melodrama that makes me wish I was the one getting swept off of my feet.

This is a MUST SEE and MUST BUY!

Summary: One of the Most Heart Wrenching Movie's I've Ever Seen
Review: Few movies really, I mean REALLY, touch my heart! This movie, though short, was well acted, well written, and down right phenomenal with its content. I challenge you to have a "dry eye" by the end of the movie. I cannot imagine the incredible loss Barry's family and Calpurnia must have felt during the period of Barry's death; it had to be mind-boggling at most. From the beginning of the movie until the end, I felt like I knew Barry and Calpurnia personally. I am soooooooooo glad that the DVD will be released next month. It will be one that I can't wait to add to my library. I not only recommend this movie to you, but I implore you to ponder its delicate content, and you will find it absolutely inspiring. Watch and enjoy!

Summary: Heartwrenching and heartwarming
Review: Finally a true depiction of what love without gender boundries can really be. A beautiful love story, truly beautifully acted with a horrific ending. A good education for those who not realize what can exist between two people without regard to gender. That love can grow between two minds and not just between the sheets. Watch with an open mind and come away with a fresh outlook. A must see.

Summary: One of the Best Movies of the Year
Review: I am an avid moviegoer, especially where arthouse cinema is concerned. "A Soldier's Girl" ranks along "Angels in America" as the best movies of 2003 (though neither were technically theatrical releases). Troy Garrity's Golden Globe nominated performance was passionate, touching and sensitive, but at the same time decidely masculine. He and Lee Pace seemed so natural together. Shawn Hatosy (Borstal Boy) gave another captivating performance. The score is quite memorable as well: the Patsy Cline (?) songs were a great complement. Its dramatic layering bears repeated viewing. In this age of CBS-style preferential programming/decision-making, we should applaud Showtime's bravery for producing this minor masterpiece.

Review: I am the mother of a M to F daughter. I watched this film while my daughter was at college, and taped it for her to view. It is an amazing film.

As a mother of a transgender/transsexual daughter it is upsetting to see there are still so many misconceptions about the community.

Movies like Soldier's Girl, Southern Comfort and Normal, etc., will hopefully help others to see that people deserve to be who they really are inside. If people are allowed to be their true selves, what a happier, healthier world this will be.

Thanks to the filmmakers and the stars.

Thanks most of all to the real people who were part of this story, and who had the courage and conviction to let this film be made.
