Summary: Nothing Glam about this Pic...
Review: This movie was a cross between Austin Powers(opening credits) and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (costumes). The film takes place during the upcoming of London's glam-rock movement in the early 70's ( right after flower power and before the punk rock, new wave scene). However, I was glad they included music by Roxy Music. During the glam-rock era it was well known artists like Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music along with David Bowie ( Ziggy Stardust)who fronted the early 70's with this type of music.Though the characters and bands were fictitious in Velvet Goldmine, it was for this nostalgic value that I rented the dvd as well as for Ewan McGregor's excellent acting. After seeing McGregor as a doped-up exhibitionist-rock star, it made me wonder if I was not looking at his character from Trainspotting. The storyline was difficult to follow. By the time you try to figure out who's doing what and to whom, who cares... Anybody who plans to show this in front of grandma or anybody with a weak heart better think twice; there's all kinds of nudity( especially frontal), substance abuse, raunchy rock stage performances, etc. Anybody who thought Prince was raunchy in his Purple Rain heyday needs to take a look at this flick. The film had a very promising story line to tell, yet got muddled or lost. As for seeing it again and again to understand more or discover new information, I don't think so...

Summary: A must have for Christine Vachon fans!
Review: I wanted to see this film because Christine Vachon(Swoon, Happiness, Safe, Office Killer, I Shot Andy Warhal, Go Fish, Boys Don't Cry, etc.) produced it. It really is a great film. Like most great films, It's hard to follow. You cannot watch it just once and form an opinion about it. From the very begining, it jumps throughout time without any warning. It starts with Oscar Wilde and bounces everywhere in between until the year 1984. The more I watch it, the more I can piece things together. Heck, I find something new each time I see it. The soundtrack is incredible. I own it. The movie says in the begining it must be played at maximum volume. That I do. I know my neighbors must hate me. So, if you wanna see a great story with in-depth characters and a killer soundtrack, this film definately delivers. You'll be hooked. Enjoy the journey.

Summary: Disappointed
Review: I am a huge Eddie Izzard fan and I rented this video because he was in it. Unfortunately he is only in the movie for about a combined total of 30 minutes. I thought the plot was very difficult to follow and at times, incredibly boring. I was seriously disturbed by the excessive nudity and rampant homosexual scenes. I couldn't even finish watching the film because I was so disgusted. This film was definitely not what I expected from Eddie Izzard and I would not recommend it to anyone.

Summary: Elegance walking arm in arm with a lie
Review: Two beautiful rock and roll boys get bedecked and bedazzled for a gorgeous film. The plot may get a bit muddled in a couple of places, but who cares? The actors are beautiful and talented, the music is incredible, and the costumes are to die for. It is a must have for fans of glam rock, but can be enjoyed by most everyone.

Summary: Those gay guys can sure rock.
Review: Yeah it's about Gay guys, get over it because many influential artists of our time have done it with another man. I'm not gay (Maybe just not trendy).......but this movie rocks if you can find it in your fathers genes to set asside the whole, Gay thing. You have to own this trip into what makes music and film a necessary bind. Both the music and the narration don't seperate themselves and play along side of one another, rather the music consistetly weaves the narration creating a Rock'n'Roll, Sex and drugs explosion with complex characters and a kickass soundtrack.

Summary: Citizen Kane is glamrockin¿
Review: This movie is like a mixture between »Citizen Kane« and a docudrama on 1970's music and subculture.

The glamrock star Brian Slade(!) fakes being murdered on stage, and on the top of his career. Ten years later, a journalist gets the task to find out whatever became of Brian.

It's about rock, fame, dreams, ruined youth, homosexuality.

Brilliant acting, not least by Ewan McGregor, one of contemporary cinema's greatest talents. Good effects, dream sequences and so on. The story, however, is "far out"...

Summary: Males play a new role in this beautiful glam rock classic
Review: Normally, hollywood will go out of its way to find the perfect looking actresses and they will make them the center of attention... the flower of the film that all the males try to win over. Velvet Goldmine, with the help of gay director Todd Haynes, has shifted its focus to a new light, males. It portrays them as beautiful & sensuous creatures - something that sets this film apart! It was completely refreshing to see this new gender perspective. If you have any sense of art or appreciation of beauty, I highly recommend this off-beat film.

Summary: This movie blew my mind
Review: I just finished watching Velvet Goldmine and it is really a phenominal movie. It mixes narrative in the form of the journalist investigating Brian Slade's disappearance with the wildest fantasy sequences I can remember seeing in a movie. Although I was only a young child in the 70's I felt like I got a good taste of what the glam rock scene must have been like and the way sexual rules were suspended at that time. I was also most impressed with the acting, which was totally believable. Having seen McGregor, Bale and Rhys-Myers in other VERY DIFFERENT types of roles, I was amazed with how convincing they were in this movie, not to mention what a good job McGregor and Myers did on their own vocals. I would HIGHLY recommend this movie to anyone who wants to be completely swept up in a psychedelic fantasy.

Summary: if you like glam rock . . .
Review: . . . this is THE movie. It was originally supposed to be a biography of David Bowie and his interaction with Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, but the director (Tod Haines) wanted more freedom to develop Brian Slade/Maxwell Demon (or should we say, David Bowie/Ziggy Stardust), without stepping over the boundaries that David set.

I do have a discaimer, however: if you are in anyway bias to the homosexual lifestyle, this movie is not for you.
