Summary: The best of the best!
Review: At last a really well done Tai Chi DVD. Navigating through the various stances was simple and The Instructor has a great energy. I much prefer her to all the Male instructors... AAA+ I recommend this DVD to anyone interested in Tai Chi.

Summary: Quick, easy way to learning T'ai Chi
Review: I have never done any kind of martial art what-so-ever. I have been wanting to learn T'ai Chi for a long time, and it has finally happened! The instructor (Jane Storey) does very well when instructing on how to do the T'ai Chi long form. She explains each individual move and gives several demonstrations to make sure you know how to do it. Being a DVD makes it easier too. For those moments when you're not sure about a movement, just hit the back button on your DVD player and you can just keep reviewing until you are sure. I have the first DVD finished and can't wait to start on the second one! I would definitely recommend this to people who want to learn T'ai Chi.

Summary: Relieves stress - renews your energy
Review: I wish the reviewer from China (think what you want, June 9, 2004 Reviewer: A viewer (Shanghai, China)) would have offered an alternative DVD in the review. For us beginners this is a great DVD that makes us feel good - if you know of something that is more accurate, then please avoid the condescention and recommend an alternative item.

Summary: Finaly a Great Tai Chi DVD for Women
Review: I've been looking for a Tai Vhi DVD in the Yang Form for ages, this is it. Everything about it is really nicely done... I even took TV outside one day and practiced in the Garden... That was the best. LOL

Summary: think what you want
Review: If you want to buy this dvd, follow her movements and then tell people (and yourself) that you know tai ji... then go ahead. This is not Yang style Tai Ji Quan. I can only imagine that Yang Cheng Fu must be rolling in his grave with crap like this being passed off as Yang Tai Ji. Maybe it seems cool to tell people "Yes, I do T'ai Chi"... but first, learn how to say it, learn how to spell it, and most importanty, learn it correctly from a qualified instructor. Then, you have the right to say that you know Tai Ji. Fooling yourself is the worst thing you can do. True growth and personal development comes from authentic understanding and diligent practice. But, if you are a shallow-minded, superficial moron that wants to do "T'ai Chi" because it sounds "cool" to tell people you are into "T'ai Chi", then buy this disc, spend a couple hours practicing, then announce to the world "HEY EVERYONE, I DO T'AI CHI but, I can't say it right, spell it right, and I don't really understand a damn thing about it but, I DO T'AI CHI".

Summary: Great way to learn tai chi long form
Review: If you want to learn tai chi long form this is the DVD to get. Wonderful production quality, clear, precise instruction, and shots from different angles make it easy to follow. Some people find the music annoying, others seem to enjoy it. If you don't like it simply mute it as it plays mostly during a non-talking part of the DVD. I only wish Jane Storey made a tai chi short form version--I would buy it in a second. Definitely worth purchasing.

Summary: Beautiful, clear presentation; annoying music
Review: In this video, Jane Storey makes learning T'ai Chi look beautiful, relaxing, fun, and achievable by anyone willing to take the time to practice and enjoy it. Her verbal instruction is clear, concise, and encouraging. Her presentation of the Yang style Long Form is smooth, graceful, and performed in a "tall" posture (the fairly upright position of a beginning student, rather than the low, deeply bent-knee style of a master practitioner.) She makes it look both easy and challenging -- no small feat with a physical art as complex as T'ai Chi!

Her description of the individual postures clearly explains what she is doing; her demonstrations of the Form are photographed from behind, and are thus easy to follow and imitate. An alternative front view is also shown, so the student can perfect parts of the motions and postures that can't be seen from behind.

I began practicing T'ai Chi fifteen years ago. Periodic long-distance moves have interrupted my study several times, but these have also required me to study with teachers of quite a few T'ai Chi styles and levels of expertise. This video is an encouraging introduction to this ancient art, and with its companion volume (Vol.II), it can help a student keep moving forward in the learning process for years.

Two flaws mar this otherwise excellent DVD.

The first is minor, and is actually more a matter of personal preference than a flaw. The lessons are filmed on a rocky, wind-whipped seacoast. It's a beautiful setting, but the distraction of the setting and the constant "popping" of the wind in the microphone dilutes the power of the lessons.

The second flaw is much more significant: the entire video is "backed up" by a musical soundtrack that evokes an atmosphere that seems more appropriate for a high-energy dance club than for the timeless, fluid, relaxing, centering art of T'ai Chi. I'm not sure what to call the music -- Euro-techno ? -- but my spouse and I found the musical soundtrack so increasingly annoying that I cancelled our order for Volume II of this set.

Pity -- if this DVD were re-issued with a calm, relaxing musical soundtrack, or even with no musical backup at all, I'd recommend it without hesitation. Jane Storey's "this is easy, this is fun, and this is really deep and powerful, too" presentation makes you really WANT to learn and enjoy T'ai Chi. It's unfortunate that the fingernails-on-blackboard annoyance of the music makes it hard for me to stay focused on that enjoyment.

AND -- Call me a "purist," but putting a pitch for a futuristic sim-world online game (which, btw, the tech-music seems to fit nicely!) on the menu system of an instructional video is a lot like selling advertising inserts for hardcover books. Tacky move, particularly in a field where authenticity is of primary importance. If I were Jane Storey, I'd be pretty annoyed at that publisher's stunt, one which casts her efforts in a light that is more suggestive of "commercial hack" than "Revered Teacher" !!

Summary: Excellent and calming. Love the music AND scenery!!!
Review: Jayne Storey gives a practical and thorough job of teaching the art of Tai Chi. I found this instructional video to be one of true quality. I really liked the funky music and beautiful scenery. As a beginner, I really needed excellent instruction, and believe I found it here!

I first thought I would NEVER be able to learn Tai Chi, but now I am confident in my style. I owe this confidence to the careful and professional manner of Ms. Storey's technique. This true master of Tai Chi is a superb teacher. I am going to order Volume II as soon as possible.

Bravo!
