Summary: spot light on baby boy
Review: I didn't think it was possible to top Boyz in the Hood and Higher Learning but Singleton has managed to do just that. On the surface this may look like the stereotypical "black hood movie" but proves to be much more. The characters ARE ghetto--yes. But they are also real and honest and beautiful. A powerful and entertaining film that offers insight into an important aspect of the black condition. Singleton doesn't attempt to "cross the characters over" but allows them to maintain their own ghetto-integrity-wisdom causing US to rise to THEIR level. The acting ranges from superb to over the top-excellent.

See for yourselves.

Summary: The Greatest Comedy Ever
Review: 'Baby Boy' is easily the greatest comedy ever made. I mean, to see Tyrese riding around on a totally pimped out bicycle and think he's cool...ahh, this is the stuff of classic film. He cheats on his girlfriend, has some kids, neglects those same kids, and then beats his girl for getting mad at him because he's out drinking and (...) with his homies all night every night. You'd think that all these things would take up all his time and he'd have none left to ride his chromed out bike, but you'd be wrong. He's constantly on it. There's not a single scene in this movie that won't make you laugh. And not only is it hilarious, its movies like this that help to alter the stereotypes that white america has about urban life. A fabulous film.

Summary: Singleton's Best Next to Rosewood
Review: I have seen all of John Singleton's films now. Generally I have critized some of his films in the past and his style but his perspective is fascinating nonetheless and his films are always entertaining. Baby Boy plays out like an inner city soap opera with incredible acting by the entire ensemble cast and some very interesting cinematography. I particularly appreciated that Singleton took the gloves off with this one and didn't play around the bush with the social issues he was exploring as a storyteller. I really thought that this was going to be a bad movie, but I was thankfully pleasantly surprised. The movie carries a great deal of weight. I think it is WAY better than Boyz In the Hood. Can't compare it to Rosewood or Higher Learning because they are really different films, but it blows Poetic Justice completely out of the water. If there are four "inner city films" to see in my opinion they would be in this order: 1. Menace To Society 2. Baby Boy 3. Dead Presidents 4. Clockers. I hope this review has been helpful.
