Summary: A well thought out plot which raises plenty of questions
Review: This film was made in 1983 when the Cold War was still in full swing.The basic idea is that a teenage hacker gets into the NORAD mainframe and sets wheels in motion which bring the US and USSR closer to war. A lot of the action takes place at NORAD HQ under Cheyenne mountain. Computer geeks will love it as the screenplay is pretty well researched with the appropriate military acronyms and computing terms being used. It's a well thought out plot which raises plenty of questions such as the role of humans in the military decision making loops. It makes computing seem relevant and interesting and surely that's a good thing? Bloopers: 2 F-16's are launched... they turn out to be F-15's. The bottom line is I was thoroughly absorbed for the whole 108 minutes.

Summary: Great, scary on how the government can fail totally
Review: Really one of the greatest movies about hacking. But it goes a lot further than that, it shows and questions how much we ought to trust the government. It also raises interesting questions about man vs. machine, and apart from that it gives a great picture of the Cold War, and the paranoia during it.

Summary: What do you think this is, a documentary?!
Review: Of course it's impossible to trigger World War III with a home computer (haven't we all tried it at some point?!). This is a 1) a thriller, and 2) a GREAT thriller! And that talking computer brings a smile to my face every time...

Summary: . . .Yeah, right . . .
Review: This film came out just in time to exploit the world's fear of hackers. To the computer literate, it is about as believable as the average slasher flick -- unfortunately, there weren't many folks who knew any better in the mid 1980's. In fact, a Federal judge based his personal opinions regarding computers, modems, BBSes and the people who would own such devices on his having seen this movie. It was entertaining, but check your brain at the door.

Summary: Simply A Classic:
Review: This is as stated above, a classic computer thriller put on the movie screen in the early days of personal computers. This movie actually inspired myself and a number of good friends in the early 80's to learn more about our computers and the future of the industry in general. Just a fun movie, and will bring alot of people in their middle to late 20's back to the days of Atari 800s & Commodore 64s (or hey, an IMSAI 8080 if you were/are lucky to still have one.) END

Summary: A hacker classic, entertaining
Review: Yes it's dated, yes it's far-fetched. But it's probably the best commercial hacker movie ever made. Broderick is convincing as the computer whiz about to start armageddon. Computer buffs like myself can't help but appreciate this film's relatively fair treatment of the subject but at the same time, true campiness. It'll never be considered a "great film", but it's a must-see for the techno-savvy and those who remember home computers and have a sense of nostalgia. Also recommended, if you like this... Sneakers. Summary: Dated but still worth watching.
Review: When this movie was released it was very up to date with the technology it featured. In this day of laptop computers and Internet access to mobile phones it certainly looks dated but put that aside and you are still left with a really good movie with a plot idea that still works today.
The story revolves around an underachieving, bored teenager (played by a very young Matthew Broderick) whose main interest in life is his computer. From his bedroom he can alter his school grades, reserve flights, and download software, all by hacking into other computers. While searching for new games from a software company he comes across a set of titles he assumes are games and decides, with his girlfriend, to play Global Thermonuclear War. Unfortunately it isn't a software company he has hacked into but a military system and he is playing against NORAD's computer. When the realisation hits that the NORAD computer, when it's turn comes round, will launch atomic missiles for real, the race is on the stop the game.
This is still a gripping film that can well pump up the tension even after several viewings. Recommended

Summary: Kept me on the edge of my seat!
Review: I saw this movie for the first time many years ago. Granted, I don't like a lot of "out there" movies, but I was surprised when I realized I was actually sitting on the edge of my seat during the last 15 minutes or so of this movie.
I won't give away the story line, but the movie is done in such a way that you're pulled into the story and the ending is one of the best climatic endings I've ever seen. (The Sting was probably the best movie ending I ever saw!)
If you let yourself go with the story and get involved in the characters, I think you might find yourself sitting on the edge of your seat, too!
DEFINITELY a fun, engrossing, PG-kinda movie. Highly recommended!

Summary: war games
Review: Sure, it's a little dated now, but this movie is still very enjoyable to watch. The story is great and the actors are all perfectly cast. This is definitely one of Matthew Broderick's best movies.

Summary: Damn this is a great movie
Review: This is perhaps the first movie I remember seeing in the Movie theatre. I saw it a couple of years after I got my first computer (a trusty Commodore Vic-20). I always wanted to become a good hacker as the lead character was. I always dreamed of changing grades and launching world war 3. I was so enthrawled with NORAD and the possibility that they had the ability to start such a war that a few years later I would join the Air Force myself.
Anyways... The movie is great. I saw it in the theatre, I bought the VHS, and now I have the DVD. I am not gonna get into the specifics of the movie because it's so straight forward. Kid likes computer, games, starts a countdown to war on this super computer, must stop the war, is successful at stopping said war, yada yada yada.
If you remember the movie you will buy the movie. It's also a great mirror into the 80's. This is what we all thought was cool. Damn we were dorks..
