Summary: Great, except for....
Review: ...the desert subplot.

It had NO relevance on the rest of the story. You could yank it out entirely and the movie would be much better.

As for the rest of the film, wonderful. The acting and action were awesome. This movie is truly a tribute to the old chinese martial arts movies. It's the best example of the genre.

This movie would get 5 stars if not for the innane and protracted desert scene.

Summary: An entertaining movie though hopelessly overrated
Review: Don't get me wrong. This was a fun, fun, fun movie. I just don't think that it was Academy Award material. The cinematography was good, I admit, but was really that mind blowing ? When I say cinematography I am talking about cinematography. Many people confuse cinematography with effects and/or the final results of careful digital compositing. Look at some of these sences. Some are pretty washed out and very flat. The interior shots, especially the bar fight, are almost amateur (again, seperate in your mind, the great action sequence from the actual quality of the lighting).

As far as the story goes, I feel that the two stories - the story of the older couple and the story of the younger couple - could have been better integrated with more creative editing. It is as if you see one film for an hour and all of a sudden you are yanked into another for 40 minuites and then returned again. But you know that Ang Lee that wanted to integrate the stories more smoothly or else he would not have tried to include flashes of the caravan scene earlier on. He tried, but he didn't quite get. Again, don't get me wrong, Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh have great chemistry, but I'm talking here of the flow of the movie.

This film was touted as a great "woman's lib" film. I can understand how someone might think so, but Ang Lee is no progressive ! Think about how the movie ends. It shows that a woman can't actually have it all. In fact the story is: when a spoiled young girl rebels, a really cool guy who was trying to help her gets killed. Just because you have heroines jumping around and kicking ..., it does not make it a "woman's lib" film.

I'll say it again. This is a good film. I liked this film. Go see this film. But don't let the hype make you see more in it than there is. There is a Taoist/Star Warsian lesson here: Don't let the masses pull a Jedi mind trick on you !

Summary: Amazing, beautiful, awe-inspiring
Review: This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The fight scenes are arguably the best I have ever seen. They are beautifully, intricately, perfectly choreographed, no easy task. (I am a martial artist myself, so I know the immense skill it takes to be able to pull off moves like those.) The scenery is beatiful, and the story is amazing. The main plot is the recovery of the Green Destiny, a sword of nearly mythic proportions which has been stolen, but it is the subplots that truly make the movie. Two seperate love stories unfold, friends become foes and vice versa. The female characters are truly strong, but are not carbon copies of each other, as too often happens in movies with female leads. No simpering women waiting to be rescued here, no coyness, no trying to catch the man. And, also, no happy ending. If you have a tendency to cry at movies, be sure to have a box of tissues handy; you'll need it. This movie touched me like no movie has for a long time. It was, in a word, awe-inspiring. Watch it with the subtitles, because the beauty of the Mandarin language is part of what lends so much beauty to the film. Within five minutes you won't even know you're reading subtitles. I could sit and watch it in its original language and without subtitles, just to be that deeply immersed in it. The actors are superb, you don't need to understand their words to know how they are feeling. This film transcends language, culture, and time. It is truly "one of the greatest movies ever made (Joel Siegel)".

Review: This movie is hard to describe. Very enjoyable, not boring, not an average love story...just great. Enjoy it!

Summary: Excellent Martial Arts
Review: This film is one of the best films I have seen because it had an excellent soundtrack, martial arts and storyline. Michelle Yeoh, Chow Yun-Fat, and Zhang Ziyi do an exceptional job of acting and fighting. It was not extrememly violent because there was no bloodshed, and it was all martial arts using swords. I highly recommend this film!

Summary: Are there people who still haven't seen this?
Review: It has stumped me for years why people insist on seeing movies with English dubbed over other languages rather than reading subtitles. This is a marvelous movie about love, fairy tales and honor. I was moved by almost every aspect of this film. The performances are excellent and I would hate to see them ruined by american voiced re-recordings. If you haven't seen this film (are there any of you out there?) buy or rent this today and let the magic spell be cast over you.

Summary: CAN WE SAY THIS IS A CHINESE STAR WARS? I THINK WE CAN.
Review: Tell me what you think. Is this a Chinese Star Wars? I think it just might be. Regardless this film is simply awesome. I hear there is a sequel. Do not be surprised if it becomes a trilogy or even better release prequels. My only hope is that Jar Jar binks stays away. Buy it and enjoy. I know I did!!!!!

Summary: Pretty Good
Review: This action-packed foreign flick will knock your socks off as Michelle Yeoh dazzles with her own stunts. Though the story is silly and predictable, this movie is very watchable for the same reasons that the Matrix is: jaw-droppingly cool fight sequences.

Then again, the Matrix had a cool story. This movie doesn't. Another complaint: the first segment of the movie takes place in the dark; it's impossible to see anything!

Subtitles annoy me as well, since all the translations aren't quite the best.

Michelle is hot, though, and leads the way in this flick. Don't buy it until you've watched it, though.

Summary: A beautiful, well-made movie
Review: I have to say that out of all of the movies that I have seen with Kung Fu and Karate and Tae Kwon Do, and such, most of them have been the most horrible movies ever which combine silly humor, terrible plot and sorry acting. This movie does not fit the trend because it is full of beauty and has great acting as well as an entriguing plot about a warrior's quest to fulfill his life and a daughter's quest for true love. There are plenty of great things to say about the movie, but most of them you would have to see this great movie to find out for yourself. Buy it.
