Summary: An Untouchable Masterpiece
Review: The Untouchables is one of the greatest gangster movies ever made. By simply looking at the cast of the movie it is apparent that it is a must-see film. The film stars Kevin Costner as federal agent Eliot Ness, Robert De Niro as gangland kingpin Al Capone and Sean Connery as Malone.Directed by Brian De Palma, the man who introduced the world to Scarface. The Untouchables is his greatest directorial achievement to date. The soundtrack is brilliant, it is solumn in some parts but overall it is a blend of classical opera music and a jumpy "Gangster Movie" soundtrack. The film has a fantastic script written by David Mamet. However, the film's success must be awarded to the actors. Sean Connery was awarded in 1987 by receiving the Academy Award (Oscar) for an Actor in a Supporting Role. I believe that Connery deserved the Oscar; firstly because he had never one an Oscar before and secondly because his acting in the film is astonishing. I have rated this movie with five stars because it stands in my collection as one of the greatest movies ever made. The Untouchables stands proudly alongside such previous gangster films as The Godfather. The DVD transfer is excellent. The picture and the sound are extremely clear. Although the lack of special features is frightening; since the DVD only boasts a Theatrical Trailer. Also the DVD is presented in widescreen I recommend that the film be watched in this format so that its full potential can shine.

Review: Need I say more, fantastically beautifull print quality, scanty extras though, makes it a bare bone experience. If actual print quality is what you care about though and you are fan of this film, buy it!

Summary: It's A Great Movie : ignore Kevin Costner and you'll love it
Review: The main problem with this film - Kevin Costner. He's wooden. Now that we're past the main problem with this film - let's get on to the good stuff. 1. Sean Connery - don't buy all the rumor's that he won the Academy Award for this film just as a "gift" from the Academy. That Academy doesn't hand out gifts. This is a great role for Sean Connery and he's excellent in it. The actual award is "Best Actor In A Supporting Role" - and that it is. He's ingrained himself in this portrayal of a working-class beat cop. 2. Andy Garcia - what's he doing here? Just being incredibly charming and stealing a whole bunch of scene's. Particularily the wonderfully framed ( and quite famous ) staircase scene in the train station. 3. The cinematography is amazing. The blocking is great and helps pace the film. You won't realize how great it is until you start to think about how GOOD the film looks. Not just that it's nice to look it - the film has presence. 4. Robert DeNiro - as Capone. Come on? Shouldn't that be enough? He's one of the defining actors of our time. He's great here. It's a small part but he sinks his teeth into it and comes out on top. 5. Brian DePalma - he's a very underated director and this is one of his best films. It's worth the money - add this film to your collection. Here Endith The Lesson. Best Regards, turtlex

Summary: great movie
Review: This may well be Brian De Palma's best movie. The cast alone says this, ie. Sean Connery, Kevin Costner, and Robert Deniro. Costner plays a Treasury Department agent (FBI) during the Prohibition Era who is assigned to Chicago to investigate the dealings of Al Capone. Connery plays a police man who is tired of seeing Chicago being bought by Capone, so him and Costner along with a Top Notch Police Academy trainee, and a FBI accountant agent band together and become the 'Untouchables'. They refuse to be bought by Capone, and mathodically stop his organization by cutting off Alcohol supplies to Chicago. The Untouchables take losses, by losing Connery and the other FBI agent, but in the end, win the conviction of Al Capone on Tax Evasion. This is a truly incredible movie, all the cast members were selected perfectly for their parts and it was truly entertaining from beginning to end.

Summary: 4 star story minus a star for two reasons
Review: This is a fantasic story, and of course it is since David Mamet is responsible for it. But what is up with the incredibly cheesy music?! And not only is it just plain bad, but it is constantly qued at the wrong times, yuck. Not only that but Kevin Costner, enough said on that. Besides all that, Sean Connery is great and the story is great, directing is ok. So, 4 star movie made 3 by the music and Costner, what were they thinking? DVD itself is also good, the picture and sound are solid.

Summary: Fast Moving, Well Paced
Review: I think that pretty much sums it up. Perhaps a bit too fast paced? A top notch film centering on the well-known cohort in crime, Al Capone (Robert De Niro) and his Federal nemesis, Eliott Ness (Kevin Cosner). The sets are saturated with the feel of 1930's Chicago and the charaters are well developed. Sean Connery plays a particulary convincing role as a cynical, straight beat-cop surrounded by official corruption. Only complaint I had regarding the film had to do with a good part of the 'untouchable' team being killed off (not much room left for a potentially good sequel). Billy Drago plays a fantastically despicable Frank Nitti, but then again, the audience is left wondering about the rest of the Capone gang. Short-comings aside, this is an enjoyable flick suitable for teens and older (a bit too much blood and gore for the younger set). Well put together and acted out, you'll enjoy the film if you like cop shoot 'em ups. ~P~

Summary: Well Done Action-Adventure In Epic Style
Review: I probably prefer Robert Stack's version of playing Elliot Ness in the old "Untouchables" tv series but I can certainly see why this film was and is a crowd pleaser. I saw it originally in the theater and its epic scope probably works best there. However, it is fine on your tv screen. Director Brian DePalma gives the old story of the federal agents vs. gangster Al Capone first class big budget treatment. One sees Kevin Costner early in his career where he adopted a persona that became much loved by the public. He is earnest, idealistic, a knight on white charger kind of fellow, faithful, honest and trustworthy. It works in this movie even though that really doesn't capture the real-world Ness. Costner used this persona in most of his other films as well but the public has grown tired of it and him in recent years, especially as he seems to really be a very different sort of person from this screen persona. Andy Garcia was the big acting discovery for me in this film. I thought he was marvelous and was going to have a big leading man career. Why it hasn't been as big as Costner's is baffling to me. DeNiro is great as Capone; a bit over the top but this was needed to counter Costner's bland goodness. Connery does one of his better acting jobs and gets an Oscar for it here. The big scene in the movie is the shootout at the train station. Those really into the action-adventure genre will really love that scene. For me personally this wasn't worth really seeing twice but once is a good night's viewing and I recommend it for that. Hubby enjoyed it both times but less the second time at home as well.

Summary: Good telling of a familiar tale.
Review: We see Costner as he starts to become the all too serious actor, trying out the role as straight arrow (and family man, which Elliot Ness was not) which he reprises in "JFK" as New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison. Before he gets schooled by the irrepressible Sean Connery he is a choir boy who piously says "I have taken an oath to do everything - under the law - to get Capone". He is transformed into a man who blows the head off a corpse to extract a confession from another man, and then has no compunctions against throwing a mobster off a roof (and yelling a smart... comment after him) rather than committing to the system of justice. Seeing this seamless change in Ness is interesting, to say the least. Sean Connery, as is his way, steals half the show as the long time Irish cop (or the "whore with a heart of gold") Jimmy Malone, who convinces Ness that if he wants to beat Capone, he must fight Capone's way. He deserved the Oscar he got for this role, very complex (but inherently and consistently decent) gruff old cop, doing things "the Chicago way". DiNero takes the other half as the best Capone ever on screen. The story goes that not only did he add fifty pounds to his then modest physique but he affected Capone's style of changing custom made shirts and silk boxers several times daily. He becomes Capone and reaffirms his place as the most convincing (to my mind) actor of our time. He is almost charmingly malevolent when he describes the neighborhood where he grew up as one where "You could get farther with a kind word and a gun than you could with just a kind word". Minor gaffes for those who want to be critical. As another noted, Frank Nitti survived Capone's downfall, and ran his mob. Anyone familiar with the law knows that divorces are not tried in Federal Court (where tax evasion cases like Capone's are), and juries are not switched in mid trial, even in the roaring twenties. Again, these are not enough to take away from an otherwise outstanding movie. I was turned off by the train station climax with the slo-mo, guns-flying-through-the-air, baby-in-the-stroller ballet. I think that scene would have worked better cut in half and run at normal pace. Great score and fabulous costumes and sets. All in all, an entertaining film.

Summary: Pretty Good Movie, No Special Features...
Review: I love this film simply because it really seems to take you back to this era. Sean Connery provided a great performance, but I do sort of think that Kevin Costner wasn't right for the part of Elliot Ness, he just didn't come off they way I thought the character should have. But De Niro gives a great performance (when has he hasn't) and the direction is wonderful. Great sets, great cinematography! But, there are no special features, maybe a trailer, but for this film - one of the all-time favorites there is not a special feature about the making of it, no interviews or commentaries. There is probably going to be a special edition in a year or so, so I would wait to purchase this one!
