Summary: good movie but i liked it more when it was called Braveheart
Review: This movie was good, but it was too much like braveheart, a guy, doesn't want to fight, someone kills his family members and so he leads the said country to beat the british. even though it is very similar to braveheart, which is my all time favorite movie, it warms my heart to see those dirty brits die, just kidding, england rocks.

Revisionist history is pretty hard to stomach especially when it's disguised as supposedly high entertainment for the educationally oppressed. THere are some very glaring mistakes:
1. Slavery is non-existant! ... At least not on Mel Gibson's plantation. When his 'slaves' are set free by the British, one says, "No sir, we're not slaves...2. Mel Gibson's character brandishes a Cherokee hatchet because he's a supposesed vertren of the French-Indian war of the 'Last of The Mohicans' fame... 3. The acting is tragically bad...

Summary: Portal into history
Review: The first time I saw this movie was late on July 4th. It was an incredible experience. I had no idea what was sacraficed for our country to declare independence from the British, but this movie hit it home with an immersive story line, wonderful characters, and intense scenes. Whether you're a historian or a war-movie fan, you won't be disappointed with this one.

Review: This movie is pretty much Braveheart. The scotts are Americans, and the Brits are still Brits. The beauty of that is: if you wished Braveheart would go on for another three hours! You got it right here.

Summary: Terrible pseudo-historical nonsense
Review: This is perhaps the worst film about the Revolutionary War ever made. I suppose historical accounts of British troops weren't scary enough for the producer, so he transformed them into anachronistic Nazis, burning townsfolk in their churches and summarily executing those suspected of disloyalty. The fictitious Benjamin Martin and his progeny are inflated with so much virtue, charisma and martial prowess that they overshadow the events surrounding them. The entire issue of post-revolutionary slavery and racism is whitewashed out of existence in a manner that would be silly if it wasn't insulting. Awful stuff, even if you intend to give the silver screen devil his due. Hopefully, true patriots can still THINK.

Summary: My Favorite Movie
Review: No matter how many times I watch this movie,I never get bored with it. There are enough little things in the plot that you will notice something new every time you see it. While not completely historically accurate, the plot is still compelling. The acting is great! Each person is completely in character. I fell in love with this movie and I hope that you do too!

Summary: A disappointment by the cookbook
Review: 'Braveheart' was a marvel. 'The Patriot', to my disappointment, is a string a timeworn Hollywood war movie cliches. I found myself at times cringing in embarrassment for the filmmakers as their absurd concoctions rolled off the screen accompanied by heroic music designed to tell us "Hey, here's a climax!". Just how many times can Mel Gibson nail a Redcoat between the eyes with a *thrown hatchet* at twenty paces? And how likely is it that one enraged Mel Gibson aided by his two terrified pre-teen boys could wipe out an entire platoon of British regulars? This is not a serious war movie, this is comic book capers. Others have pointed ot the historical inaccuracies and unwarranted Brit-bashing. I was relieved to confirm my suspicion that there is no record of British regulars burning a church full of colonist civilians. Does Hollywood never get the sense that they shouldn't slander whole countries? Sheesh. OK, maybe I'm cranky because I just took my family to see the new musical 'Chicago' because it won Oscars, and it turned out to be mostly mind-numbing, bottom-feeding, Hollywood-self-indulging dreck with some admittedly good actors who nonetheless had to hide the fact that they couldn't dance even when mostly naked in front of my teen-aged daughters, and...OK, I'll really stop now.

Summary: Ok. but not great
Review: For really a first time try, the Revolutionary War movie
The Patriot was pretty good. It was bloody at times but it showed an accurate, or almost accurate, view of how it really was. A little on some of the historical characters in the movie, Benjamin Martin was a take off on Francis Marian, a back-woods general that was known by the British as Swamp Fox. Marian and his men played a major role in South Carolina Revolutionary War. Col. Tavington was a take off on
Banastre Tarleton. Tarleton was a violent British calvalry leader that was known for his cruelty. There are a few other things that I'll point out. At the battle of Lexington and Concord, one of the tactics of the colonist militia was to get behind stone fences, trees, and rocks and fire at the British from all sides. The British did not know how to handle this kind of fighting! In The Patriot what I saw was almost a lack of the brilliant planning that the patriots used! There was one seen were the patriots capture a British supply wagon. Instead of using any kind of tactic, they came out in the open on the road and tried to ambush them!
They ended up paying for their stupidity because Col. Tavington just happened to come up at the right moment! Another thing that just didn't work in the movie was when the patriots took back their men that the British had captured. Instead of raiding the
fort or capturing British soldiers to exchange, they made
scare crows and dressed them in British uniforms! They did not have any British prisoners to exchange and hoped that the British were as stupid as they were!
This would have only been tried, and only succeeded
in the world of Hollywood. The last thing that I will bring up is the seen were Tavington burned the town church with people inside it. The thing wrong with it is that there was no effort to escape. Overall though, the Patriot was ok. I thought the last battle seen was well done.

Summary: Splendid scenery
Review: I'm not one for war films usually, but I liked this one. The filming is beautifully done and for me there is enough personal plot involved, it's been ratified that way. I don't really know anything about 'ancient' American history so I'm not going to comment on whether or not it is accurate - I have no idea if it is or not. The acting is good as well as the scenery as I've already said and it's good for being at battle movie! :-)

Summary: A Worthwhile DVD
Review: I'm not going to waste your time retelling , for the umpteenth time, what "The Patriot" is about, or its inaccuracies. Most of the reviewers before me have done a fine (and sometimes not so fine) job doing that already. Instead, I will explain why I feel this is a very good movie and would make a worthwhile addition to your DVD library.
When a movie is historically accurate ("Gods and Generals," for instance), it gets panned because of the lack of political correctness, or it's too slow, or overly long, etc. When it isn't historically accurate ("The Patriot"), it still gets panned for not being historically accurate. You can't win!
I found The Patriot to be an engulfing movie filled with suspense, excitement, humor, drama, and, dare I say it, enough historical accuracy for the viewer to get an understanding of the time and events in which this movie takes place.
I guess what appeals to me most in this movie is the fact that they do not attempt to bring the late 20th century mores and morals (or lack of) into the 18th century, as too many of today's Hollywood flicks make it a point to do ...I had to laugh at the fact that these liberal do-gooders were so upset that there were children in "The Patriot" who actually were allowed to brandish a (gasp!) musket! C'mon people! This is supposed to be a movie representing life in the late 18th century Revolutionary War time. Kids with guns was as common and accepted as kids with skateboards today - more, in fact. These revisionist historians would prefer to 'Disney - fy' our history and remove any truths they deem politically incorrect.
There are wonderful examples why this movie is slightly above many others when it comes to the period in time it is attempting to revise. For example, the old custom of 'bundling,' where one would lie in the same bed as their sweetheart fully clothed and sometimes restrained as to ensure no funny business could happen, takes place in this movie, as does some of the archaic language from the time period, used in the dialogue ("take me in his stead!").
It's these sort of subtle historical gems that helps me to overlook the inaccuracies of the battle dress - not that I am happy about that inaccuracy at all. But, unless you get a truly passionately produced movie ...we sometimes have to, unfortunately, settle for a bit less. But less is not always bad.
One day, I hope someone does the Revolutionary War right and produces/directs the ultimate movie about the birth of our great nation...But, until then, "The Patriot" and "The Crossing" will have to do.
