Rating: Summary: An 80's Adrenaline pump flick! Review: For us older folks, Tom Cruise looks like a kid in this movie. A big casting mistake with Cruise and McGillis as love birds - no chemistry here. A better than average video transfer but the audio is so-so. The action sequences speak for themselves and made this movie a real show stopper. I really liked the rivalry between Cruise and Kilmer for the Top Gun trophy. Once again, Paramount has taken a diamond and turned it into a lump of coal. No extras, irritating menus and no printed info to speak of. Still, if you like this movie, the DVD is a lot better than VHS any way you cut it.
Rating: Summary: IF YOU REALLY WANT TO SEE A STORY OF 80'S SEE THIS ONE! Review: I LOVE THIS STORY AND THE BEST OF ALL IS THIS SENTENCE,"I FEEL THE NEED...THE NEED..FOR SPEED".
Rating: Summary: a definite "guy" flick Review: But hey Tom Cruise is in it so it's great for ladies too. This is a great action movie and really makes you want to be just like Maverick and become a pilot! Good flight sequences and sound track. Plus a great love scene too.
Rating: Summary: Totally Awesome !!!! Review: When this movie came out, down here in the South Pacific, I thought that it was totally awesome. I watched this movie more than any other and when I realised it was on DVD and a zone 1, I brought a allzone player specifically. This movie rocks !!! And I agree with another reviewer with regard to the opening sequence. Sensational !!!!!
Rating: Summary: The Dolby Surround Breakthrough Review: This movie is a must for the serious home theater buff. Top Gun was truly ahead of its time in its use of the Dolby sound format. It was this movie that got me excited about home theater years ago...
Rating: Summary: Good film, mediocre disc Review: I agree with a previous review indicating that Paramount needs to get a clue, or rather they need to spend a few extra bucks and not be so cheap to produce better quality tapes and DVDs. I have this on tape (widescreen) and found the quality awful. I rented it on DVD and was not that impressed with it. One way to force them to do a better job is not to buy these versions or to write and insist that they up the quality of their work.
Rating: Summary: Love the movie, but the disc gets -2 Review: I ordered this DVD as soon as it was announced, and I'm glad that I own it (I absolutely love Top Gun, and the DD 5.1 track is very nice), but Paramount needs to get a clue! The video transfer is better-than-average, but there is some MPEG artifacting (especially in the widescreen cut), *no* extras, and the menus are rather annoying. Top Gun is a great movie, definitely worth buying if you enjoy it, but compared to the disc Gods (New Line, Criterion, Warner), this is hardly a DVD spectacle. There are far better demonstrations of what the medium can do in terms of audio (Fifth Element, Armageddon, Ghost in the Shell), video (LA Confidential, Tomorrow Never Dies:SE), and virtually all discs have more extras than this. Shame on Paramount for making a wonderful movie but a far-below-standard disc.
Rating: Summary: If You Only See One Movie From The 80s, See This One Review: Top Gun is one of those movies that excellently portrays the macho, patriotic, slick and arrogant styles of the 1980s that President Ronald Reagan's tough-line policies and patriotic attitudes generated. I was only five years old when Top Gun first came out, and I loved every bit of it. While the acting is a little cheesy, the storyline a little flimsy, and the undertones rather sexist, one of this film's biggest highlights are all the slick cliches. How could any of us forget:"I can see it's dangerous for you- but if the government trusts me, maybe you could." "Actually I've only done this twice. First one I crashed and burned." "And the second?" "I don't know. I'll tell you tomorrow but it's looking good so far." "I'm holding on to close. I've lost the edge." "You don't own that plane, the taxpayers do! Son, your ego's writing checks your body can't cash!" "I feel the need...the need...for speed!" "You were alot like your old man. Only better...and worse." Of course, the Navy recruiting efforts and Pepsi advertising in this movie seem a little overt, but all in all, it's a good movie if you want to see all the 80s stereotypes played out. It's one of those films that earmarks a generation. I really miss the 80s when I watch this movie. I mean this film really demonizes the Russians and makes Americans look great (it makes the Evil Empire look even more Evil). If you want to instill a sense of patriotism in your kids (and yourself) buy this film. Sure, it's propoganda at its best, but hey, it really makes you proud to be an American. Mister Gorbachev, tear down this wall!! (Oh wait, it's already down)
Rating: Summary: Great Entertainment Movie! Review: You should never judge a movie beyond its entertainment value unless it is historical. My Top Gun tape is worn out! I don't know whether I should buy another one or not. I love the camera work, the music and the movie stars in the film. We all growing old, but the memory we share associated with the film is forever young! Of course, it is fake. The jets actually fly so fast that no 30 fps film can capture it. I heard the pilot had to slow down in order to be shot in the film. Nevermind the reality! This is a film, a great film for entertainment!
Rating: Summary: Goofy recruiting film with some good flying sequences Review: I was working on the F-14 program at Grumman when "Top Gun" was released. The only more embarrassing movie featuring our products was "Flight of the Intruder". Since the Tailhook scandal in the early '90's, the behavior of Maverick and his buddies, previously only sophomoric, now seems recklessly foolish. The real star of the movie is, as it should be, Naval Aviation. The opening scene of carrier flight deck operations is terrific - sadly, the movie is all downhill from there. Modern fighter planes like the F-14 are not utilized like WWII era P-51's, as they are in this movie. The reality is much more complicated, and much more interesting, than the nonsense presented in "Top Gun". As for the acting, every member of the cast (with the possible exception of the always annoying Ms. Ryan) has done better work elsewhere. The script is hackneyed, the situations unbelievable, and military life has never been like it is in "Top Gun".
