Rating: Summary: A must-see for Titanic buffs Review: -This is a two-part mini-series made for TV, for the most part I really enjoyed it. I am a big Titanic buff and I'm fascinated by the true event. The only two problems I saw with this film was that the real-life character of Thomas Andrews(the ships builder)was for some reason left out of the film. The other problem was that I couldn't stand the actress who played Alice Cleaver(another real-life character),for the most part she was annoying and I can't understand why anybody would trust her with their children. I'll admit that some of the other characters might make this film seem like a soap-opera, but understand thats how it was for those people. One character who standed out was Tim Curry(although that rape scene should not have been so Graphic). Bottom line its a good movie but if your're looking for something else on the subject try the 1958 movie A NIGHT TOO REMEMBER.
Rating: Summary: Far more genuine acting than Cameron's film Review: As far as the special effects, of course Cameron's version wins. Anyone could see that. But I feel that Di Caprio and Winslet didn't quite make me feel like they were really in the disaster. To me, they looked like young Hollywood actors in costumes. I feel that the 1996 miniseries actors were more adjusted to their roles and really appeared more realistic to the time era over 80 years ago. I truly believe the 1996 version has acting far better than the main characters in Cameron's film.
Rating: Summary: Not impressed Review: I am a huge historical Titanic buff, and this movie was truly dissapointing to me. The plot was thin at best, the cast, though superb, turned in a rather blase performance. This protrayal didn't capture the spirit of the distaster as some of the best documentaires and movies have done. As a fan of this historical event, I was truly dissapointed in this very "Hollywoodized" attempt.
Rating: Summary: Good movie about the Titanic disaster Review: I didn't see the Titanic movie that starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet but I saw this one that starred George C. Scott, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Peter Gallagher and I like it though I could have done without the nasty character played by Tim Curry and what he did to the young immigrant girl and for that reason I can't give this movie 5 stars, I like Tim Curry but I just didn't like the character he played, but there really were some great scenes in this movie especially the scene when the ship was sinking and they showed all the people who didn't make it off and that was really sad especially the children who didn't make it off and It just made me think of the real people who actually lost their lives during the real Titanic disaster that's how powerful that scene was.
Rating: Summary: ONE WORD: STINKS Review: I DISLIKE THIS MOVIE BECAUSE THE SETS ARE DISSIPOINTING,LACKING THE BRIGHT COLORS THE 1997 FILM GAVE PROVIDING A SENSE OF WARMNESS,AND HURT,KNOWING IT WASN'T GOINNG TO LAST FOR LONG.SECOND,THOMAS ANDREWS,MY HERO,IS NOT IN THE MOVIE.THE STORYLINE WAS ALSO DISSIPOINTING.
Rating: Summary: Good Viewing For Buff's Review: i have been i titanic buff for about 7 years now. i've read every book and seen every movie including this one.The sets are quite good and its pretty accurate. But the f/x look like something a chimp on a laptop made and the performances are enjoyably hammy(except for George C. Scott, who makes a terrific Capt. Smith). Its nowhere in the same league as titanic (1997) but is a good view if your in the mood for ANOTHER titanic movie.
Rating: Summary: Amazing acting and historical accuracy Review: I just watched the CBS miniseries, and I think it outscored the Cameron version on many levels. First of all, for the budget that it was shot for, it certainly accomplished the recreation of the 1912 disaster both realistically and dramatically. Secondly, the film utilized the rich history surrounding the disaster in telling the story. I sometimes felt in the Cameron film that the story could have been set on any ship. Thirdly the acting was superior. As the 'Leo Dicaprio' role, actor Mike Doyle did a far superior and much more emotionally convincing job than what was seen in the Caneron version. Time Curry, Peter Gallagher, Catherine Zeta-Jones, George C. Scott, and Barry Pepper round out this immensely talented and moving cast. I hope they re-air this some time soon on TV.
Rating: Summary: Good Titanic Movie Review: I like this "Titanic" movie. The acting is OK but nothing to write home about. The special effects were not that good, but it was a low-budget mini series, what did you expect? something that James Cameron would make? It's a good movie and I will buy it when it's available. Why should everybody make fun of this movie? Every miniseries on network television will have bad special effects and acting.Thats why you don't see them in movie theaters.
Rating: Summary: OK film Review: I like this release because its nearly three hours of uninterrupted film, where if you tried taping this off of television when it aired years ago you would suffer the commercials. This movie is not as bad as some people make out- I dont know why people even like this story in the first place, unless it makes them feel good that they are alive and warm while some people died a hundred years ago in a big boat. Tim Curry's character is ridiculus, but he plays the part well- hes not a bad actor at all.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely wonderful Review: I originally saw this movie when it was on TV as a mini-series. Though I enjoyed it (with the exception of the Tim Curry role), I felt at the time that it lacked something. Now after having seen James Cameron's extravaganza that was so ridiculous and boring, my appreciation for this movie has gone up.
The characters are well acted and the scenes provide a glimpse of the Gilded Age and the majesty of the Titanic. As other reviewers have noted, the script in this movie blends some of the roles and does cut a few corners presumably for the sake of saving time. While certain of the technical aspects could have been better, the details of the ship were nicely done and the characters were quite believable. The story itself was interesting - as opposed to the juvenile plot devised by Cameron, and the actors (George C. Scott, Eva Marie Saint, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Peter Gallagher) were excellent! I especially liked Marilu Henner's portrayal of Molly Brown - the best I've seen yet.
If you are looking for the best movie on the tragic events of that night in April 1912, get the 1958 movie, A NIGHT TO REMEMBER, with Kenneth Moore based on the book by Walter Lord. It is THE definitive movie on the sinking of the Titanic based on the hearings held to look into the reasons for the disaster and actual accounts of those who survived. The ship's interior settings in this film were lovingly recreated based on information on the Titanic and actual film of her sister ship, the Olympic. The realism is palpable and some of the scenes are absolutely heartbreaking. A NIGHT TO REMEMBER is a film that provides the appropriate irony, tragedy and solemnity that such an event deserves and is well worth seeing. As a runner up, this current film, TITANIC, with George C. Scott, et al is worth seeing as well.
