Rating: Summary: This movie has it all Review: Upon watching this video, my intial impressions were that this was yet another dull family drama. But 2 minutes into the movie, I was proven most wrong. I was immediately enraptured by the heartfelt storyline and the intense atmosphere which seemed to convey a sense of realism, which made it seem all the more personal. The acting is absolutely superb, with all the cast (in particular Brenda Blethyn) portraying their roles with great emotion and sensitivity. One must wonder as to why this movie did not receive any Academy awards!!!Overall, I found this a thoroughly intriguing movie, with the upside being that I can watch it whenever I want on video!! Most highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: best movie of the year!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: Beautiful, interesting comedy-drama,with great direction by Leigh and wonderful acting by all, especially Brenda Blethin. She deserved Oscar, but the Oscar went to McDormand who was find but not great.Everyone should see this movie, because every family can find itself here.
Rating: Summary: Mike Leighs best??? Review: Just maybe his finest work. As ever very moving and often very funny with wonderful perfdormances, most especially from timothy Spall. there are minor faults of course (it wouldnt be a mike leigh without them), but is there any director so skilled at tackling real issues and genuine experiences in such a sympathetic and entertaining manner. No. Superb stuff. Buy it and enjoy..
Rating: Summary: A brilliant piece of realism. Review: This movie made me laugh and cry. It was so real and so human it was like somebody took a camera and hit it in the walls of the house of a real family going through all this. These are the films that deserve the awards. Pictures like this one rarely come out anymore so catch this one. It's a triumph for Mike Leigh and I simply loved Brenda Blethyn's performance as well as Marianne Jean-Baptiste's. Truly this was the Best Picture of the year.
Rating: Summary: Witty, charming and provocative... Review: After I turned off the VCR, I thought, "Gee, I really liked that movie!" Several days later, I've thought about it a lot and have felt compelled to see it again. I find I really loved the movie and the message it sent my soul. The story is truly wonderful. The family dynamics are so real. They have mixed humor and tradgedy into one big ball of entertaining fun. The story line hit close to home. My husband and I (caucasion) and our two adopted daughters (african american) are able to completely empathize with the characters and their issues. It was difficult to understand at times (not the story, the language -- british and with lots of quiet talking and tones) but I sat on the edge of my seat so as not to miss any of the wit and humor of the characters. It was a compelling and rich movie and the characters were incredible. Great choice for a Friday night at home with your partner and friends.
Rating: Summary: It should have won for best movie of the year Review: This is one of the movies that you can watch again and again - it is such a fresh, original movie! It makes me cry even after repeated viewings. A must for any video collection

Rating: Summary: AMAZING...WHAT IS ESSENTIAL IS INVISIBLE TO THE EYE. Review: ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES EVER! It is so touching and so beautiful. Cynthia's brother is the one who really says it all when they are at the birthday dinner...you MUST see it to hear what it is...and it will make you realize that what is essential is invisible to the eye... Does color matter at all...???? NO!!! If only we all could realize this. BEAUTIFUL, TOUCHING, WELL ACTED, deserved all awards that it got...and then some. SEE IT!
