Summary: "How you gonna make a DECENT movie...
Review: ...about people who make DIRTY movies?". That question has to make this film a hard sell in some places. Plus, I read a blurb somewhere that said the flick has "very little porn". I went "say what?" What we have here is the story of three people in the porn industry of the '70s: a filmmaker named Jack (Burt Reynolds), a veteran actress of his (who's also sort of a co-producer) named Amber, and a teenager named Dirk (Mark Wahlberg) who Jack discovers working as a waiter in a nightclub. Of the three, Julianne Moore as Amber steals the show. Jack wisely pairs Dirk with her in his onscreen debut, and she proceeds to lead this nervous rookie through what is this film's most explicit scene with gentle hints and cues (after all, at this point he's still just a scared kid who wants to get it right), sincere compliments and warm smiles. It makes the scene more touching than raunchy. Later in the film, we learn that she's like that with all of Jack's younger players--they nickname her "Mom". Offscreen, she's in a nasty child custody battle (her job doesn't help matters), so maybe it's predictable that she'd tend to "adopt" younger co-workers on the job. It shouldn't surprise anyone that the adult film business has more of a tendency to chew people up and spit them out than is the case with its mainstream counterpart. The suicide of one young actress several years ago prompted an industry insider to comment that her death indicates a need for people in the industry to "take care of each other". Whether intentional or not, the character Amber in this film symbolizes that. A couple of things puzzle me, though. I'd heard somewhere that this film is loosely based on the career of porn legend John C. "Johnny Wadd" Holmes, but at one point, Dirk mentions Holmes by name, saying that his work's misogynistic tone isn't something he intends to emulate. Also, the film's title led me to believe that the song "Boogie Nights" would appear in the soundtrack--nope, not even when they roll the end credits. It's just the name of the club where Jack first meets Dirk. Spielberg this film ain't, but don't confuse it with the stuff offered by mail order porn distributers, either.

Summary: Very slow. Many pointless scenes
Review: This movie was a bore. It had many long, drawn out scenes that added nothing to the plot or the interest. It was all I could do to get through it all. I wish I had rented it. Now I own it and won't likely view it again.

Summary: Amazingly good!
Review: When I first heard of this movie I tought the subject matter was disgusting. I refused to watch it in the theater. Then person after person told me how wonderful it was. I thought the world was doomed. Finally I gave into temptation and rented it to see how great it was.

This movie is very good. I was immediately sucked in the minute the opening chords of "The Best of My Love" started and Burt Reynolds (his best performance) walks into the disco club in a long single take shot. The story is about Dirk Diggler (a kid with a dream of being a star). Next thing you know he is recruted to shooting porn movies with Burt Reynolds. Of course about half way through he beings abusing drugs and selling out and he goes through hell to learn his lessons. What I thought was pornography turned out to be a nineties classic.

Don't get me wrong. While the film is a masterpiece in all ways that make a film a classic and really is not all that offensive it should not be viewed by certain people. There are highly explicit sex scenes and the coccaine abuse is fairly graphic as well. The music is very well chosen as well and the acting is outstanding. Paul Thomas Anderson made a hell of a movie and I can't wait for his next film "Magnolia".

Summary: A mastefully filmed picture. Moving, Vivid, Unforgettable
Review: In one word... AMAZING. This is easily one of the best films of the nineties and in my opinion, one of the best of all time. The movie combines comedy and drama beautifully. Burt Reynolds, Heather Graham, and Mark Whalberg are all excelent in this film but it is Julianne Moore who holds the picture together with her depiction of the sad-eyed porn star, Amber Waves. P.T. Anderson is the next Quinten Tarantino. I think that Boogie Nights should have swept the 1997 Oscars and Julianne Moor should have definatly recieved the top prize for her daring performance. Exceptional!

Summary: Worst Movie *Ever*
Review: This is without a doubt, the worst movie I have ever seen. It was boring, disgusting, and just plain BAD. When I watched this, I couldn't wait for it to end. The fact that Mark Wahlberg is in this doesn't help any.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: good film
Review: this film is what staying alive should have been.you know you close down saturday night fever and then? this would have been the perfect conclusion to that masterpiece.instead the honors go to this film.while not quite as good and as original as snf it's a good film for what it does and shows.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: intense
Review: Great entertainment. The "drug ripoff" scene near the end of the movie is classic black comedy and is on par with Fredrick Forrest's "vigilante" scene in "Falling Down" or "Butch's watch" in Pulp Fiction.

Summary: JULIANNE MOORE DELIVERS!
Review: Boogie Nights is a great film. Julianne Moore proves that she is one of the best and most versitile actree working today. She deserved the Oscar for her subtle performance in this epic film. She will, no doubt, earn anouther nomination and possibly a win for P.T. Anderson's upcoming Mag-no'li-a. JULIANNE MOORE IS EXQUISITLY AND EXCEPTIONALY SUPERB!

Summary: to hell with the one-star ratings on this movie
Review: I recently watched this movie on a Saturday night with some friends of mine. Some of my friends had been raving on and on about this film and I wanted to see, for, myself what all the commotion was about, needless to say I fell in love with this film in the first hour. This film clearly depicts the life in the 1970's with (of course) the drugs, sex and rock 'n' roll. I became angry at why people thought this movie was unplesant, trashy and badly directed. What I personally believed these people thought was that they really didn't get the feel of this movie, the pure essence and amazing acting made this film what it is today. The innovative acting (by all actors/actresses) made this film an immaculate piece of work. You have to read between the lines and forget about the porn material, and focus on the originality this film produces. For those of you who had doubts on this film, I urge you to watch it again, underneath all the porn material (although there is very little) and drugs hides an amazing film about the virtues of life in the 1970's. In a nutshell an amazing film.
