Summary: Great atmosphere, weak resolution
Review: Sean Connery is a Sherlock Holmes-like Franscican monk who, accompanied by his novice (Christian Slater), investigates murders in a remote abbey where the Devil is rumored to stalk the halls. The story builds slowly on a solid foundation of strong performances and wonderfully gloomy and forboding atmosphere. Unfortunately, the plot vaporises just when it should intensify, with the introduction of F. Murray Abraham as an inquisitor who has had dealings with Connery's character in the past. Another distraction is the awkward introduction of a beautiful peasant girl whose major role in the film seems to be to inject a little T&A into this world of cloitered monks.

Summary: The most important historical novel
Review: I think this novel is the most important historical novel in the modern literature, so the movie is a good complement for the people who have read the book. It's one of the best performance done by Seann Connery. I recommend this film for all film-lovers, because it's one of the best films all times.

Summary: moody historical whodunit
Review: Faithful to the book by Umberto Eco, this film is a lot of fun -- dark labyrinthine passages and strange characters populate this isolated setting. Sean Connery is terrific as the visiting cleric, and a very young Christian Slater plays his companion. I wasn't sure a film could do justice to the remarkable denoument of the book, but everything here is great, and makes you appreciate the Middle Ages in a less-than-romantic way.

If you like mysteries, this is a good one. If you like history come alive, you will enjoy this.

Summary: The Name of the Rose
Review: One of my all time favorites! It's a brilliant, thought provoking, and clever piece with good acting from a young Christian Slater. Sean, of course, is always good. The cinematography, scenery, and dialog are wonderful!

Summary: As good as it gets.
Review: If you want to get a feel for the beginnings of our modern civilization, this movie is as good as it gets. The sets, the actors, the script, the feel, the whole package translates the book so well you don;t need to read it, but after you see the movie, go ahead.

Summary: Weak
Review: This film was a major disappointment. I recently finished reading "Name of the Rose" and not only does the film grossly deviate from the text, but the acting was very dry and uninspiring on all accounts. This is yet another example of the motion picture industry trashing a literary work of art. Comparing this film to Eco's masterpiece is like comparing "The Scarlet Letter" with Demi Moore to Hawthorne's book.

Summary: One of the GREATEST films I ever seen!! Definately!!
Review: I really LOVE this film SO much!! It describes the 13th century, and the monks and the abbey so good, that it almost feels like your in the movie. I've seen it over and over again, and it never stops fascinating me. Has to be seen!!!!

Summary: What a great movie
Review: I just watched this movie last night, and WOW! Although the beginning was a bit slow, this movie was incredible. As just a mystery, this movie would easily get 5 stars, yet the epic 14th century monastary setting, and its intricate politics make this movie incredible. Although the ending took me completely by surprise, it was exactly how I would have wanted it. I've read the book and it differed from the movie, yet it was nice to see that the filmmakers left in some of the dry humor from the book. The irony in one of the last scenes, as the monks calmly stand by as innocent people burn at the stake, yet try their hardest to save their library and its obvious crimes from fire, is incredible, and makes for one of the most lasting scenes in modern film history. This movie is a blue-chip classic, and is one of the top 10 movies I have ever seen.

Summary: One of the best depictions of 14th century northern Italy
Review: This movie was simply brilliant. The movie was one of the best depictions of 14th century northern Italy. One could only wonder how life may have been then and what may have gone on inside the concrete walls of the Monasteries. One could also only imagine how far the religious leaders during their time could go in order to conceal books and manuscripts that did not agree with their teachings and religious beliefs. Perhaps one of the most thought provoking movies of all times.

From this movie, we can imagine that monasteries may not actually be as holy as we have been taught to believe. We do need to question authority and not take everything for granted. A judgement just because passed by the holy inquisitor does not have to be correct. He may be more interested in saving his faith and gaining the favor of the Pope rather than the pursuit of truth.

We also learn the power of the Pope during the time. Pope was pretty powerful with pretty amazing powers. He was the King of the Kings. He had the power to judge the judges. He may not have been as forgiving and as kind as the Pope as we know it in the late 20th century.

Another thing that was pretty amazing is to see autopsies being done even in the 14th century. The knowledge of the human body may go back much beyond we seem to realize. Also the fact that Christian Slater chooses his master over the girl he really loves. I can't imagine this during our time.

In short, I highly recommend that everyone, at list in the Christendom (Christian world) to watch this movie. This kind of setting has never been done before. Totally out of this world, got to warn you though, beginning may be a little slow.

Summary: Brillant! Truly a great medieval story.
Review: I can only imagine what it would be like to live back in the 13th century, however this movie made me feel like I was a witness to those times, few movies can do that. Some might say the starting of the film was slow developing, but this was nessasary to establish the setting like any great story should do. The ending was perhaps the most powerful part, with Christian Slater's character ending the story with a haunting power that makes a contemplater question life's choices by what he says. Sean Connery is great with a great cast, Please PUT IT ON DVD.
