Summary: The Bed You Sleep in
Review: "The Bed You Sleep in" by Jon Jost, is a beautifully crafted film set amongst the landscape of Oregon. It came as a complete surprise to me, having been introduced to his work for the first time, via a friend, and not knowing what to expect. It's a film that manages to be both thought-provoking and disturbing on the one-hand and also lyrical and a visual pleasure to watch. Viewers will find their patience rewarded, (arguably the pace is slower than what we have become accustomed to in mainstream Hollywood films), as no other film I have seen in the last five years looks at family life in America with such acuity and frankness as this minor gem by Jost. Superb also is the acting by Tom Blair and Ellen McLaughlin, reaching new levels of intensity. Throughout the film we always feel that we are party to extraordinary events occuring just beneath the surface of small town American life. Check out also the luminous photography by Jost himself, featuring many special effects that evertheless always add to rather than detract from the storyline.

This is a film builds and builds to a final shattering effect.I for one was reduced to tears and this will be a film that will remain with the viewer long after the final credits.

Summary: the bed you sleep in
Review: Acting is superb, but the long tedious shots of the small town are as exciting as watching an X-Ray film I kept wanting to fast forward.Watched it once and then straight into the never watch again basket.

Review: This film blew me away, but I am a sucker for the excrutiatingly long shot. The best film I have seen in years.

Summary: FIVE STARS FOR THE FILM, ZERO STARS FOR THE DVD
Review: This is definitely one of the greatest films ever made, arguably Jon Jost's best film to date. However, this DVD's treatment of the film is atrocious. I have 100s of DVDs and I am unusally forgiving about technical quality, especially when a company choses to release an excellent hardtosee film like THE BED YOU SLEEP IN. However, as a concerned consumer I feel compelled to say that, technically, this is the single worst DVD I own. The image constantly flutters, as though you're at the movies and there's something wrong with the projector gate. You'd do much better with the VHS tape. At least then you wouldn't suffer incessant picture jitter. I'd think twice before buying any DVD from Vanguard Films again.

Summary: my take on the movie
Review: This was a fascinating film and in my opinion, the whole point of the srtuggle was caused by the rape of the forests by a normal man who did not realize his actions until it was too late.
Sure there are long, slow shots, but worth setting the tone. Music was also perfect.
