Summary: Great movie, but it's missing the best song!
Review: I was recently in a local production of "Fiddler on the Roof," and during rehearsals I came to love this enduring musical of love, family, and of course, tradition. So I bought the DVD, and it definitely did not dissapoint. All of the characters are so wonderful, especially Tevye. And that scenery--wow! The only drawback was the absence of the song "Now I Have Everything," which in the stage performance is sung by Perchik when he and Hodel become engaged. It was one of my favorite songs from our production, and it would have added greatly to the movie. So really four and a half stars...it needs the song for five! Aside from that, this fantastic movie has become a favorite of mine. "In our little village of Anatevka, you could say that every one of us is a Fiddler on the Roof!"

Summary: FABULOUS FIDDLER
Review: A wonderful retelling of the Broadway production. Topol is flawless as the dairyman who talks to God and Rosalind Harris (Barbra Streisand look alike)is astounding as his eldest daughter. It is beautifully filmed on locations in Yugoslavia.

Summary: Skinny Letterbox
Review: "Fiddler" is a great movie, but the presentation on this DVD is a letterbox so narrow it makes viewing uncomfortable even on my 32" SONY. This is the kind of widescreen you're better off not buying unless you have 16:9 screen ratio. I won't be buying one for a couple of years so this purchase was a waste. I love this move, however. Happily, I have it in full-screen VHS. Had they only used a wider letterbox, I could have stood it, but the screen is mostly black. Be forewarned.

Summary: I Never Tire of This Movie or Music
Review: This is one of my all-time favorite movies. I have watched it so many times. I'm really happy to finally own it myself. No one could match the performance of Topol--I love to hear the music over and over. The story is timeless. The scenery is fantastic. What else can I say?

Important note for overseas viewers: I am in Morocco, and have multisystem machines, which include NTSC. However, when I ordered this DVD, I discovered that my machine must only contain the CANADIAN version of NTSC, which is a lower number than the U.S. version. So it only plays in black and white on my television. Before your DVD player (or video player, if you order that version) has the 4.43 NTSC. This is a movie that is REALLY important to see in color, or you miss all the details in the scenery.

Summary: It Could Have Been Filmed Yesterday
Review: Sure, it's not a substitute for studying Torah or Talmud, but it doesn't pretend to be either. It is simply one of the best musicals of all time; with characters one cannot help but call one's own. I use it in my classes when we talk about tradition: yep, college age kids who listen to Rancid and the Dead Milkmen (ironic, huh?) always come back with the same observation: "I can't get those songs out of my head!" If that isn't the sign of a classic, what is? It is a beautiful, haunting film of strength and hope, of courage and commitment. I love it now more than ever. For three hours, anyway, I'm not so goy!

Summary: Really Is A "Special" Edition
Review: Fiddler on the Roof is a wonderful musical and one of my very favorites, combining the right touch of comedy and fun with a serious, meaningful plot. The movie version was very well-made and well-cast, especially with Topol as Tevye -- who could have done it any better? The songs and musical routines are fun, memorable, sometimes even pretty, and many have become classics.

The best thing is that this Special Edition DVD really does offer some special bonuses, not least being a full-length version of the film with Topol's running commentary, which reveals some genuinely interesting information about the making of the movie and the actors, etc.. You also get commentary from the film's director, as well as a never-before-released song that was edited from the film. So if you were thinking of buying this musical, go ahead and get this edition!

Summary: Fiddler on the Roof
Review: Fiddler on the Roof offers a snapshot of life in a Jewish village in pre-revolutionary Russia, and introduces us to characters who are both thoroughly likeable and interesting. We experience the story through the eyes of Tevye, a husband and father watching his daughters grow while the world changes around him and as he attempts to preserve the traditions which previously offered stability and comfort to him and his people.

Although the setting and plot are undenyably serious, they are well-balanced by Tevye's ability to take things in stride and to maintain his wit and well-developed sense of humor.

Summary: Timeless Masterpiece!
Review: An incredible tale of heroism! Topol is perfect as Tevye. In the film, he makes me laugh and cry, love him and hate him. Undeniably accurated form a Jewish perspective, this film was way ahead of its time. The plot, is very serious, even stressful, and does not end on a happy note, but it will leave you thinking! The music is stunning and John Williams' orchestarations are first rate. The cinematography captures the raw essence of the movie, rather harsh and cruel. Perhaps the best thing in the movie is Isaac Stern's violin playing. What a boon to have this on DVD. The dream sequence along with fabulous dance sequences, lead me to my final conclusion that I would rate this in the top 5 movies of all time.

Summary: Tradition... fantastic!
Review: Fiddler on the roof is by far one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces of our time. The cinematography is amazing. The way every thing connects pulls the viewer inside and out of the story. This is shown through Tevye's monologue's. While involving the audience, he almosts asks for our opinion. Through this movie you will see that tradition may not be the most important bind holding together a family but the families individuality that makes it strong. Countless thumbs up for Jerry Bock's "Fiddler on the Roof"!
