Summary: Great intent, delivery falls short
Review: This film did not live up to my expectation. It lacked a much needed authenticity. I found the flow of the movie to be choppy and inconsistent. The subject matter is begging to be explored; this movie only exploited it. At the end, I was left feeling teased and unsatisfied.

Summary: pretty good, but a little depressing
Review: This film was directed and acted very well, and the film-makers struck a nerve! Although it was a little unsettling to watch the characters use each other out of selfishness, the film was generally interesting and captured two groups of people that (honestly) annoy/intrigue me: (1) ignorant White people who think that imitating ANY aspect of Black culture is appropriate or 'fun' and the young women who throw themselves at any Black man JUST BECAUSE he's Black (I love and respect my Brothers, but in the end I think we all know what is really important); (2) Black people who ONLY see a way out through rap/music/entertainment. I am not discouraging anyone from persuing their dreams, but the last time I checked, not every White girl can 'sing', nor every Black man play ball. An education (where-ever you may find it) is always more enduring and valuable. enough of a rant? peace.

Summary: Forget this!
Review: This gets 2 stars for having an interesting idea. In the end the filmmakers know nothing about hip hop, and even less about the young black and white people who are attracted to this lifestyle. It wasn't a movie instead it's a long drawn out essay that asks the question (literally many times)why are white kids attracted to hip hop? While all the black kids act ill without an intelligent bone in sight. Mr. Toback do some research!!!!!!

Summary: Mostly plotless, totally pointless
Review: This is what happens when you make a movie with no script. It's basically a bunch of actors arguing with each other in character. Language, sex, violence...it's all here, but none of it for any discernable reason. I think a couple of the scenes were actually written. These form what little plot there is. There is a funny scene with Robert Downey Jr. coming on to Mike Tyson, but that's about it. I'm sure the filmmaker was trying to make some really profound point, but it's totally lost in the swirling, directionless flow of ... that is this movie going down the toilet.

Summary: Absolutely Terrible
Review: This movie could have been so amazing. The premise was great -- a study of black and white relations among the youth, and the way that power, money, respect, ambition, and just plain "coolness" blend together.

Unfortunately, it's a painful disaster. It is slowpaced and incredibly awkward. The love scene between Schiffer and Power is representative of the entire film -- clunky, mildly confusing, silly, and entirely unsatisfying. People have negative made comments on these boards, but no one seems to focus in on how incredibly bad the acting and storyline are.

The director bludgeons you with any point he is trying to make, using a documentary filmaker that bonds with the students in about 14 seconds to make his points, since subtlety doesn't work. Just in case the points made by the documentary aren't enough, he has Schiffer read (or massacre, depending on your interpretation of her acting) selections from a term paper she is supposedly working on. Need more? Phillips' father is not just an ordinary white man, he's an upper crust snob with an affected accent, a black servant, and an amount of money that only the actors and director of this film would find average. Who could ask for a more realistic canvas on which to draw conclusions regarding race?

Downey and Stiller are both terrific actors. Downey is great here, possibly the only good performance. Stiller isn't --his scenes are about as taut as an unused pile of rope. Power is a pleasant surprise. Tyson is terrible. He acts like he is reading a script placed just off-camera. Ghetto Jedi? What? Yoda wasn't a good actor either, but please. I guess the novelty of Mike Tyson didn't affect me like it did other reviewers.

I was very excited about this movie, since I live live in Los Angeles and previously lived in downtown Richmond. Although I am white, I have not been part of the majority in years. Sometimes being on the inside, however, makes the clunky efforts of academic, out of touch directors look all the more exposed.

I give it two starts for effort. It still makes you think, as any movie on any true issues will, and I appreciate anyone's willingness to tackle tough issues.

Summary: Great Movie!
Review: This movie is a profound look at the Hip Hop culture. I waited for a long time to see this. Toback did a greta job casting Mike Tyson in this movie, he was much needed. The all star stellar cast turns in profound performances. All around great movie that makes you think, laugh, and be shocked! 2 thumbs up!

Summary: Great Video
Review: This movie was excellent. It shows how white teens today try to be like Black Teens. its not racial or ignorant it's reality, especiallly in New york. I'm a teen myself from Brooklyn new york and alot of white teen try to be black so they can feel they can fit in. Most people think it's a racial movie its not. Look at eminem and bubba sparx they try to be black i think white people take this movie the wrong way anywasy its a great movie and i think it deserves 5 stars coming from a black teenage girl who lives the life and does not judge it. so beofre you write about it or talk about it live it know the facts and not opinions

Summary: I want two hours of my life back!
Review: This should have been a good movie - great cast, director, the camera work is glossy and gorgeous . . . but there's just no plot. There are too many characters, and none are given any depth - as an audience you just don't care about any of them. If you're a fan of any of the cast, and are hoping to buy this to see them (like I did for Elijah Wood) then DON'T. Chances are, they'll have only a few minutes of screen time.

The highlight of this movie was the sheer comedy value of watching Robert Downey Jnr flirt with Mike Tyson. The downside to this movie is . . . every other minute. And why Tyson should be given any screen time is beyond me. He is just as obnoxious and base as in real life and should not be glamourised in any form - which this movie threatens to do.

I'm sure there was a noble idea behind this movie, but it seems to have been lost. Save your money.
