Summary: This sassy bird will find a way into your heart!
Review: When I first set down to watch this movie I wasn't sure it would be up my alley, I don't usually like animal stories where you hear the animals talking because, well, it is so [unrealistic]. But you know, parrots really CAN talk, which helped this movie have a great realistic feel to it, even though Paulie turned out to be much more, well, expressive than the average parrot! He is a sassy yet charming bird with an attitude that will have you in side splitting laughter! His story starts out with him living in a dark dreary basement in a cage by himself, and he is discovered by a man who wants to know his story. Paulie won't talk at first, but eventually tells the story of his life, from when he lived happily with his child friend Marie, and how he was taken away from her and then proceeded to try and find her and ended up with different people and adventures. "Paulie" is entertaining throughout with a very nice ending. I bought this movie for my collection since is such a nice family movie.

Summary: Excellent movie for kids and adults
Review: When I go to the video store to pick out the evening's entertainment, I don't usually make many good movie decisions. By picking "Paulie," I finally got one right. I got this movie for our five-year-old daughter and I grudgingly decided to watch it with her. It was a fun, intelligent and heartwarming movie. I laughed out loud at parts, and my little girl cried at various parts -- both with sadness and joy. After watching it, she said it's now her favorite movie, passing "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and "The Wizard of Oz." Pretty tough competition!

Summary: Decent family fare
Review: While "Paulie" can be endearing and has moments of enchantment, it follows a formula so old that it's more than a bit frayed around the edges. A little girl is separated from a beloved pet. The pet has many adventures trying to find the little girl. He is finally caught by a team of scientists, who the formula dictates nust be insensitive and mad. A sensitive employee with a low paying job saves Paulie. The inevitable happy ending follows.

Of interest to me is that the director, John Roberts, has just one other film to his credit. This is the marvelous family film, "The War of the Buttons" [1994].

Paulie looks very realistic, except when he flies. When he does this, it looks like he's being moved around on a string.

There is a plot twist at the end, which adults will already have figured out, but which will surprise children.
