Rating: Summary: Good Acting, But Where's The Gratitude? Review: I was dissapointed with this movie. I've been attending AA meetings for over 2 years, and have never been to a meeting where not one person is grateful to be there! I am surprised that AA let them even use their program name. Even in early sobriety, i was happy to have a place to get help. Most alcoholics i know are happy not to HAVE to drink anymore. If i ever went to a meeting like this, i would want to drink too. By going to meetings, i learned how to live! I am forever grateful to God, and AA, for letting me live a happy, and sober life. I have problems like everyone else, but through the program of recovery, i have learned how to try to live life on life's terms, and to turn my will and my life over to God. These are all suggestions i have learned in the halls of AA. This movie shows only half of the picture of a meeting. The acting was very good, but i wouldn't want a person to think this is what it is all about. If i saw this before i got sober, i woould have never got there. There are so many miracles in the halls. And being a drunken slob for 17 years, and not being able to go 1 day without a drink, this program has showed me how to do this. Bill W. would be dissapointed.
Rating: Summary: Not a true picture of AA Review: I was horrified when I viewed this movie. One thing AA strives for is singleness of purpose - there are other programs for addicts, shopaholics, etc. What went on in the film more resembled a meeting in a treatment center (where nobody there has more than 2 weeks sober) than an AA meeting. There was not one positive role model in the movie, other than the chairperson, and clearly he had lost control of the meeting. Richard Lewis was touching, but profanity like that from the podium is hardly the norm. No two people talked about the same topic. Barely a mention of steps, traditions, sponsorship. Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob would roll over in their graves. If you are considering AA, please know that this movie is NOT what AA is about. Hope is found in AA meetings. People share their experience, strength, and hope. Lives are saved there. Shame on Richard Lewis for distorting the fellowship like that. If this is really his vision of AA, no wonder celebrities can't stay sober.
Rating: Summary: Must see for all in 12 step programs and those considering Review: This film brings home the reality of addiction. The performace by Richard Lewis is academy award worthy.Makes you do alot of thinking about your own abuse of whatever substance.Well worth the price to add to your DVD collection.
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: This film hits the nail right on the head. Great performances, powerful dialogue.
Rating: Summary: This IS NOT alcoholics anonymous Review: This movie does a very good job of portaying an alcoholic that has not yet found the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. The AA meetings in this movie are packed with self centered selfish and restless, irrtable and discontented people who meet to share their misery. Real AA meetings offer experience, strength and hope, and the solution to how an alcoholic can live happy lives without alcohol.
Rating: Summary: A Toast to this movie! Review: This movie made me want to sit down and have 5 or 6 Long Island Ice Tea's while I watched it. As one actress in the movie said, "I want to drink and drink and drink, and then I want to drink some more!" Very effectively captures the world of the addict.
Rating: Summary: Great characterization by Richard Lewis Review: Thoughtful and well-written character-based movie and incredible, realistic, gut-wrenching dialogue. And what a great job Richard Lewis did! But...is this blasphemy?...the movie made me want to drink.
Rating: Summary: "My Name is __. And I'm an Alcoholic." Review: Truest Portral of Alcoholic Recovery I've Ever seen (outside of the actual rooms of AA).
Rating: Summary: Not a true picture of AA Review: What originally interested me in seeing this film, was the original premise. Richard Lewis is an alcoholic in recovery who has undergone a lot of personal tragedy, and decides to pick up the bottle again. However, what this movie could have been did not quite pan out. While it certainly tries to portray the insidiousness of alcoholism, many other films do this more potency and accuracy. Furthermore, the AA meetings are more like group therapy and everybody is incorrigably depressed and immersed in their personal problems. The movie would have better served if it had provided some comic relief, lighthearted moments, OR hope to show contrast with Lewis' own inner darkness.
