Rating: Summary: Average Barrymore Conedy-Drama. Too Serious. Review: Riding In Cars With Boys is a Comedy-Drama about 2 girls: Beverly and Fay who grow up together in a small suburban town during the 50's and 60's. Beverly's father has major plans to get Beverly into a good college, and Fay has plans to have sex with every boy in her class before she's 17 [LOL]. During the late 60's, Beverly and Fay go to a party at a Fraternity House, where they meet two boys: Raymond and Tommy. That night, they go to a park, and, their car breaks down. Bored, they resort to having sex...with no protection. They both get pregnant, and must marry the boys. Beverly's parent's are ashamed at their daughter, and Fay's parents wouldn't care either way. But, for the next 10 years, things happen...very bad things. Beverly finds that Ray is and has been addicted to herion, since they got married, and Fay finds that when Tommy went out into a war, he met a girl, and had sex with her. Beverly and her son, now 6 feel as though they are alone in their lives, other then the company of Fay, who comes over frequently. But, things get so out of hand, that Beverly and Ray get divorced...and Fay moves away to stay with reletives, since she can't support herself.Riding In Cars With Boys suffers from having a much too serious plot to work with, and a bland screenplay, which leads us back and fourth from the present to the past. The performances are very good, Barrymore and Murphy's in particular. James Woods is quite good as the father, although you dislike him at many point during the film...which I guess is good in a way, no one is perfect. The film starts out very good actually, with Barrymore as a young adult, and Fay as a boy-loving girl...but then we get into the drug addiction part of it, and it takes a turn for the worst... Riding In cars With Boys is a chick flick, for those who can handle stupid stuff.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful movie! Review: My husband and I both saw this movie at the theater and loved it! We were ready to go back again. I am thrilled to see it available on DVD. This is a movie about a girl who makes one bad choice after another, and her parents unfortunately make plenty of their own (i.e., they make her mistakes even worse with their "fixes"). It is at times heartbreaking and at times hilarious, the story of a girl-mother and her relationship with her loser husband and her son, to whom she really doesn't become a mother until years after he is born. It is a story about a woman sadly watching her dreams lived out by everyone but herself. The critics did not like the fact that the story does not include how she got from her pathetic life to the life of a successful writer, but in my opinion (and my husband's), that didn't matter. The real entertainment was her younger life and how she FINALLY realized how she was her own worst enemy. This movie is well worth the money, and you will want to watch it again and again.
Rating: Summary: GREAT MOVIE Review: i thought this movie was awesome. i'll admit it was a little long but i enjoyed every minute of it. i am a huge fan of drew's and this is one of her best. Not only does drew give a great performance but so does steve zahn. in fact all of the acting was absolutely fabulous. though i did do a little more laughing than crying i would still consider this a drama. i would recommend this movie to anyone
Rating: Summary: New Movie in my ALL TIME Top Ten! Review: What a wonderful surprise for what we anticipated, based on the coming attractions, to be a simple movie, to be an emotional roller coaster from the seemingly innocent pleasures of being a young teenager to the heavy responsibilities of parenthood and all the complex relationships that go with it. Penney Marshall is a genius, and Drew should get "Best Actress" for this one! I'm adding it to my all time top ten movies! The characters made me laugh through my own tears. From a chick's perspective, it doesn't get any better than that!
Rating: Summary: VERY INTRIGUING Review: I saw this film and it is a wonderful flick. I would refer it to people that like dramatic comedies because it's exactly what you're looking for. Drew Barrymore does an amazing job in this movie. She's a beautiful woman as it is, but this film makes you respect her even more.
Rating: Summary: Great Movie- Truly Terrific Review: This wonderful movie by Director Penny Marshall asks the question: Are parents to blame for the wrong choices of their children? "Riding in Cars with Boys" involves wrong and right choices. Because the class "Mr. Popular" insults the class "live wire" consolation is given by the class "drop-out" and the "live-wire", aptly played by Drew Barrymore is "knocked up." What do you do about that in the late 1960's. You marry the class "drop out" and deal with the results usually unhappily. The results entail about 20 years of troubles, joys, disappointments, triumphs, and growing up experiences. This true story does not fail to satisfy. Barrymore is good, but so is James Woods as her caring but sometimes insensitive father (who may have saved himself a pile of troubles if he had just bought that bra she wanted for Christmas when she was 13.) It spans the live of Beverly Donofrio from age 15 to age 35. Drew Barrymore does a very good performance at all ages. I've never seen any of her other work compare to this performance. What we have here is a comedy-drama about relationships between parents and child and parent as child and child and best friends too. Touching and tender the movie is just right to bring back hilarious and not so funny memories of what it is like to and what happens to girls who go around, "Riding in Cars with Boys." and, too, what it is like and what happens to boys who go aound "Riding in Cars with... (you get the picture).
Rating: Summary: *Yawn*... Review: To begin with, I've never read the book that this movie was based on, so please don't interpret my review as a commentary on the real Bev's life or memoir. Okay...the movie. To summarize neatly: Bleagh. The most obvious flaw lies in the weak script, which consists solely of empty "heart-felt moments", strung together to cater to the stereotypical "chick-flick" audience. Pretty insulting to the average viewer's intelligence, really. On-screen tears (which "Riding in Cars" has plenty of) do not a fine movie make... What bothered me most is the lack of attention paid to Bev's character, beyond that of a clichéd teenage mother. Allegedly, she's a gifted writer, but the plot gives no indication of that, regardless of it's supposed importance as the driving force/goal in her life. Instead of proving herself a worthy candidate for the ill-fated scholarship, the character's dialogue is - at best - vapid and flakey. And the illustrious novel that she writes...when did she write it? How did she write it? Marshall definitely could have expanded on the "struggle" (or so it's indicated) that Bev endured in order to write it. Instead of adding this dimension to her character, the script relentlessly depicts Bev as a weak caricature of a young mother and reveals little beyond that. Another gripe is the exclusion of a large chunk of Bev's (and her son's) life, which leaves a lot of unforgivable holes in the story (i.e., what's with his passionate resentment/attachment to Bev? when did she become such a self-centered ice queen? et cetera). I realize that it's difficult to condense someone's entire life story into a bite-sized movie venture, but that's no justification for leaving out so many significant developments in the main characters' respective lives. Why did this movie merit two stars instead of one? While "Riding in Cars" was an unquestionable waste of my time, it wasn't the *worst* movie that I've ever seen. The attempted miscarriage scene was at least slightly amusing...I admit to laughing a bit at that one. My recommendation? Wait for this one to grace the Blockbuster shelves and save your money.
Rating: Summary: Jerry Springer is the missing "star" in this dog! Review: This movie is horrible! Take a Springer show, add a couple of A-list actors, sell the heck out of Drew Barrymore then put Penny Marshall as director in bold letters. Save your money! Not even James Woods with a beer gut and his trademark attitude pulled this one off the floor! They should put the Oprah "O" on movie ratings too so I will know what NOT to see! LOL
Rating: Summary: A must see! Review: Definitely a must see! I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It's a movie that really makes you think, and as we know, these are becoming more and more rare these days. I really enjoyed Drew Barrymore's performance. It was all so real! The movie can be a little drawn out at points, but overall this is an A+ rated movie! :)
Rating: Summary: It made me cry several times, I LOVED this movie. Review: While I am a Drew Barrymore fan, I went to this primarily because I willl see anything that features the gorgeous Adam Garcia. What I found was a movie I loved immensely, and one that made me cry at several points. I know so many young girls who should SEE this movie immediately. And Drew Barrymore deserves an award for her performance, to be sure. Adam Garcia fans will have to adjust to his American accent, which he pulls off pretty well, but there are times it seems just a bit forced, or that you can detect just a hint of his usual Aussie accent. It was a movie I intend to watch again and again, and will buy as soon as the DVD comes out. I can't say much more without revealing too much of the story. I highly recommend this movie.
