Summary: the 411
Review: This movie contains a lot of nudity as the movie critics have already explained. However, one thing that a particular movie critic said that I highly disagree with is was his description women in a scene where everyone is in robes and masks. The critic said that their breasts were artificially enhanced. Upon further review, the actresses in that scene were all natural. The tell-tale signs of breast augmentation were not apparent. Oh yeah, and Tom Cruise does a great acting job.

Summary: An unforgettable experience!
Review: This is probably the best movie of last year along with Fight Club and The Sixth Sense. It's just Kubrock at his very best. What I like so much about Kubrick is that his films are so unique. They are different from all other films. He has takled every genre but made his films different from everyone else. This rates among his best work along with Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket. Tom Cruise gives a really solid performance and should have been nominated for this role. This movie is an unforgettable experience and you will see different things with each viewing of it. A true masterpiece.

Summary: People have no clue
Review: I work at a major video store, and I can't believe how much people HATE this movie. 9 out of 10 people feel it's terrible. I never hear anyone complain about "The Bone Collector" or "Stigmata", which are truly pieces of garbage. I do feel "Eyes WIde Shut" was marketed completely wrong. People just don't like movies that are different. People usually complain about this movie being slow. They usually say, "It's so slooooww." Does every movie need to be fasssttt? It is only slow if you have some problem keeping your attention span focused. This is truly one of the most engrossing and brilliant films I've seen in a long time. There is nothing else like it, unlike the other titles mentioned above, but still people love to hate it. The music, acting, cinematography and pacing are PERFECT. There may be a few minor flaws, but the strenghts outweigh them 10 fold. If you don't watch this movie because your friends tell you it's awful, that's your loss. Go back to your "Double Jeopardy" and "American Pie" and let people who KNOW what the cinema and Stanley Kubrick are all about.

Summary: My review of Kubrick's erotic psychology:
Review: EYES WIDE SHUT 1999 / Traumnovelle 1925 -- "Dangerous Art" ?

There the defining questions are always : How so? To What? To Whom? It is well known, among scholars, that Nietzsche said : "I believe that I have guessed some secrets of the highest man's soul. Perhaps everyone who guesses them is destroyed." (Trnsl., Thomas Mann; 1947.) Kubrick's so refined adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler's Freudian/Nietzschean novel of fin-de-siècle decadence, at this climactic turn-of-the-century and outset of a new millennium, takes the form of his culminating masterpiece of cinematic art and sophistication. And is, in a word : Great !

His filmed tribute to and like celebration of all the deep-psychological Mystery in the human condition, reconstructs anew and actualizes those earliest discoveries which motivated very passionate collaborative exchanges between the psychiatrist and the novelist. Indeed we may well contend that our extremely talented director was once again "ahead of his time" with this last film and his own breathtaking exploration of the dream-like reality of the human Soul !

Such examples of the "dangerous" variety ARE perhaps that which is why "we have Art..." at all; that is, "to keep us from perishing from (mere) truth ! " (Nietzsche). It is regrettable that undue impediments have been imposed on our sharing in his "vision" ! http://www.indelibleinc.com/kubrick/ewspetition.html

Summary: It's about us
Review: Once again Stanley has the last laugh. People balk at the "slow, fragmented, boring, trite construction of the plot and dialog". Well, folks, that's the point. Always experimenting with new ways to construct a film (don't forget that the "two film" construction of Full Metal Jacket was reviled when it was released only to be praised later) he has given us this time a picture of ourselves in our daily trite, fragmented and ,dare I say, occasionally complex lives. Our dreams, and dreams are a central focus of this film, impact our conscience and sub-conscience with every bit of force as "real" events. It can be said that our dreams help create our waking life and our waking life creates our dreams. So once again, Stanley merely holds up the mirror and we often do not like what we see.

By taking us on a journey through the intertwined dream/real lives of Dr. Bill and Alice, Stanley has given us a precious gift though which to view our own lives. All of the poeple in the film play day-to-day roles that are, in many ways, at odds with who they really are. The incongruity between the inner self and what other people see helps to set both Bill and Alice on their respective journeys of self discovery. But who's journey of self discovery are we watching at any given time? Ah...one of the secrets of Eyes Wide Shut that will only be given up with time.

Mysterious?...yes. Frustrating at times?...you bet. Richly rewarding if given the time?...absolutely.

Watch for colors, double characters, self warning, clues as to whether scenes are "real" or "dream".

One important thing to point out. In the scene where the note is passed to Dr. Bill through the gate of the Orgy house, he looks up at a security camera. The camera is pointed at US..."stop this line of inquiry or there will be grave consequences for you and your family". Indeed.

Summary: Movie should be XXX
Review: DO NOT BUY THIS MOVIE! This movie is rated incorrectly. There should be a better warning of it lewd content. Beware, this is a horribly written/directed movie which belongs among the ranks of B-Playboy flicks for the sexually frustrated, devoutly immoral persons.

Summary: A really bad film!
Review: How could anyone make a boring movie involving murder and sex? Well, Stanley Kubrick has! This film trudges along at such a slow pace that even the most devote film enthusiast will be fighting to stay awake. At 2 1/2 hours, the film is vastly overlong and this is evident from the first scene that involves a party that never seems to end. The acting is okay although Nicole Kidman's character is annoying. Fortunately, her scenes are minimal. Photography and set decoration is excellent with rich saturated colors and impressive houses and decor. This is the film's only redeeming quality. The whole feel of the film can be summarized by Nicole Kidman's final line. Stanley Kubrick has made some of our most memorable films and it is sad that this had to be his swan song. And how wasteful that the actors involved in took so much time out of their lives. Truly one of the worst films I have seen in a while.

Review: The people who gave this one or two stars don't know the first thing about cinema. They should stick to Batman.

Summary: One of Kubrick's best
Review: I know alot of people didn't like this film when they first saw it, I didn't eather. But when the DVD came out i rented it just to give it another chance. The first time through i found it odd, overly ridden with sex and sluggish pacing made a bad movie. But the second time around it was a whole different experience. It made a hell of alot more sense and was at times haunting to watch. If you are one of the people who didn't like it the first time through see it again I'm sure you'll like it much more. You may find a respect for the filming and the story that you may not have had, I know i did. Just watching Kubrick's steady-cam work is breath taking. I do have to say that Kidman did a pour job in this film, her drunk and high scenes were a little more than comical to watch. I've always loved Kubrick's work and the first time i saw this film i was dissapointed that this was how he left the world but the second time through it has become one of my alltime favorite films ( and I have seen alot). I encourage people to take another look at this film it may change your mind. Sadly though the DVD left in the CG figures in the orgy scene and stand out due to a pour mat job but that is the only down side to the film.

Summary: The only thing my eyes were doing was fighting to stay open
Review: I and the entire row of people that saw this movie were bored out of our minds. I actually fell asleep at one point. The charactors were unlikeable. The plot was unfathomable. The "point" was missing. And, the story was plain, old boring. I agree with some of the other reviews - rent before you buy or you might be sorry.
