Summary: A great film about the true heroes of the Civil Rights Mov't
Review: The Long Walk home is a stunning tribute to the individual women and men who contributed to the stugggle for human rights in 1950's America. This film brings to life Dr. King's belief that the true heroes of the civil rights movement were the people who were willing to make sacrifices in order that all could enjoy freedom. Each year, I show this film to my students at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School, Hicksville,NY. Its portrayal of the Montgomery Bus Boycott reminds us that empowered people can, and do, make a difference and that social change never happens by itself.

Summary: The Long Walk Home
Review: The Long Walk home was a very informative and pleasurable movie. I first viewed the film in morality class. I thought it was just going to be another boring movie but to my surprise is was excellent! The movie provided an excellent view on the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the prejudices that were faced by the people living in Alabama at that time. The movie presented me with a clearer understanding of the boycott as well as the moral issues that were faced by those who were affected by the boycott. The characters in the movie were captivating. They were so strong in standing up for their rights. Odessa despite the long walk refused to ride the bus and Miriam despite her husband continued to drive in the carpool. The movie proves that one person can make a difference and change the way others think.

Summary: The Long Walk Home
Review: The Long Walk Home was an excellent movie for all generations. It was very informative as well as touching. The movie was about the time of racial segregation and how families were affected by this era they were living in. The movie shows not only how African American families were affected but how the differences of opinions in white families were affected also. Even husbands and wives did not always agree on what was going on. This film is one to be remembered because it showed the truth, and even though the truth is not what many wish to see, it is the facts. Odessa showed courage, love, and most of all faith. Odessa was a great role model through the movie to Mary-Catherine. It was obvious in the movie that Mary-Catherine looked up to her. I would recommend this movie to many people of all ages and especially high scholars because it taught me a lot about how we got here today. The most important it showed me that it is ok to stand up for what you believe in.

Summary: Fine film marred by sappy ending
Review: The Montgomery bus boycott certainly is promising material for a powerful film and, for a while, I thought that this film would deliver on that score. The cast is excellent. All of the reviewers have mentioned Sissy Spacek and Whoopi Goldberg, but it should be pointed out that Dwight Schultz also turns in an excellent performance as Spacek's husband. He exemplifies one of the major strengths of this film. Too often white racists are portrayed as rabid, villainous characters with whom it is difficult to identify. This is comforting to white viewers because it allows them to put psychological distance between themselves and those other "bad white people" who are nothing like them. The southern whites in this film are "just plain folks" not so different from the people I meet every day.

The problem with this film is the major way in which it cops out at the end. The film begins quietly and builds to a climax that promises to be quite intense and potentially devastating. Well, I won't give away what actually happens, but I will say that it is a healthy dose of love-is-stronger-than-hate sacchrine that is completely at odds with the rest of the film. What a miscalculation.

Summary: Amazing and worth watching!
Review: The most amazing thing I noticed is the opening scene where the black women are waiting for the bus. They get on, pay their fares, then walk back DOWN the steps, go to the BACK door and get on! I had to watch that scene over again because I just could not believe it -- that black people could not even walk THROUGH the bus to the BACK. And I'm sure it's a true -- and horrible -- depiction of how they were treated at that time. I highly recommend this film and watch it frequently. The acting is very believable; Whoopi and Sissy are exceptional.

Summary: Christian morality and The Long Walk Home
Review: The movie The Long Walk Home was a brilliant movie which shed a new light on the interaction between blacks and whites in the 1950's in Montgomery. Odessa, portrayed by Whoopi Goldberg, was a black woman - a tower of strength. She knew her beliefs and followed throught with them. Miriam Thompson, portrayed by Sissy Spacek, was also a beautiful character. She overcame the fear of her individuality and good morals - and she went against her husband and most of the white population to support the hated, oppressed black population. Marting Luther King Jr. once said, "the real heroes are those who courageously and with a majestic sense of purpose face erring and hostile mobs and agonizing loneliness". Truly, Odessa and Miriam were the real heroes, along with countless others who stood up for their beliefs. The movie The Long Walk Home was filled with truth and beauty, honesty and emotion. Seeing the movie in my Christian Morality class, I was at first a bit skeptical. However, by the end I had fallen in love with the wonderful film. It taught so much and I learned several important lessons about true Christian Morality.

Summary: An Epic Movie
Review: Their forbidden friendship changed a nation. Two women, black and white, in 1955 Montgomery Alabama, must decide what they are going to do in response to the famous bus boycott lead by Martin Luther King. An all-star performance from the entire cast. The emotions were so clear and vivid, I felt like I was actually living this event with them. This movies displays the sturggles as us Americans had to overcome. Not only with the African-American's but the women's role in life as well. Sissy Spacek as Miriam Thompson, plays a great "speak when asked" housewife. She goes through major changes in this movie. Whoppe Goldberg, is playing one of her best roles ever. The calm neutrality she has when she gets slander after slander. Lexi Randel as Mary Catherine, is a remarkable. She plays a child taking in all of the events that happen, and to not forget this when she is older. To learn from these events. The rest of the cast all adds to the great movie.

Summary: An Excellent Movie
Review: This film brilliantly depicts how ugly discrimination is. Discrimination of any kind is as ugly as ugly gets. "The Long Walk Home" is just one example of the many forms of discrimination.

I am a huge fan of Whoopi Goldberg and she is a fantastic actress whether in a comedy or a show such as this - The Long Walk Home.

One can also appreciate the sense of helplessness of Mariam Thompson played by Sissy Spacek. The desire to do what is right and the desire to honor her husband's expectations.

A great film, a part of history that should teach all of us to embrace and celebrate the differences in societies, cultures, races, and the differences in all of us.

Summary: Great movie concerning black's struggle
Review: This is a marvelous film that gives an accurate account of life in the middle of the 20th Century in the Southern US. I couldn't wait for it to come out on DVD. And what did we get? The usual horrible ARTISAN shoddy worksmanship. The DVD has no extras, not even a trailer. It is in full frame instead of widescreen. But most important, the print is terrible. It is very soft, as if it is a copy of a copy. There is no sharpness to it at all, and colors bleed. It is as bad as Artisan's "The Quiet Man." Artisan should not be in the DVD business, as they have no concept of quality. I would be ashamed to work there.
