Rating: Summary: Christine's Review - The Long Walk Home Review: 'The Long Walk Home' was an excellent film. It was very informative and educational, as well as pleasurable. In Montgomery in 1955, life was difficult for those who lived there. I think this film was a great portrayal of how hard everyone's life was and the changes they had to make. Odessa Cotter and Miriam Thompson, two central characters, teach us an important lesson for other to live by. Miriam doesn't allow her husband, Norman, to tell her what is right and wrong. Miriam doesn't let him control her actions. She realizes that helping with the carpool and supporting the boycott is the right thing to do. Odessa is very strong while all this is going on. She has hope of a new order. At first, I was skeptical on all the violence and racist language, but later realized that having it all gave a more practical view and a better understanding on how harsh life was and what everyone had to deal with. I recommend and encourage everyone to see this movie, if not already seen. Even if you're not into this kind of historical background, it's still very good and enjoyable to watch!!
Rating: Summary: Portrayal Of History Review: After watching the movie, The Long Walk Home, I looked back and realized how enjoyable and knowledgable it was. Even though it has some sketchy scenes that may be offensive, it gives the movie more realistic characteristics. I had the opportunity to watch this movie in my Christian Morality class at my school, and I feel that it was a good example to use to express ideas of morality. (Hint: good for teaching teens about concepts of morality for all of you teachers). In general, it gave me the sense of what things were like back then, and it took you into the life of a black person trying to be and equal in a country that would not except her. The Long Walk home illustrates how one radicalist is willing to go against everyone just to do what is right. In the end, a bond is formed between people of two different worlds. Please consider this movie, because it's a good way to educate everyone about our countries history.
Rating: Summary: Montgomery Bus Boycott Review: I believe that this film was a great success. The film discusses many important issues that will in the end be a great help to others. Watching this film in class as an eleventh grader, I thought it taught me alot of important ideas. A little background information of the film "A Long Walk Home"is, it is about the famous bus boycott, that signifies the starting of the civil rights struggle in Montgomery, Alabama. A Black women Odessa Cotter is a maid for the Thompson family. The boycott occurs and this well loved women finds many opsticals starting to occur. Tension grows throughout the film, which also helps in making the viewer more focused on the main idea of the film. I would say that the main topic or point that the film illustrates to its viewers, is to believe in yourslef from the start. Follow through with your dreams. This film also made me remember a little saying that I knew as a child, "Believe in yourslef right from the start, if you have a BRAIN you'll have a great and truthful HEART".
Rating: Summary: A wake up call to all who watch this film. Review: I cried like a baby at the end of the movie! Though it was told with a child's words and from the perspective of the white family, this movie was really about everyone, regardless of color. Anyone seeing this will surely rethink the lines of prejudice in their lives and how it impacts everyone. This was Whoopie Goldberg's best work since the days of her stand up comedy routines. And who DOESN'T enjoy seeing Ving Rhames? This is one POWERFUL movie. It will make every Afican-American want to sit in the front of the bus.
Rating: Summary: A moving story about growth, pride, and courage! Review: I loved Sissy Spacek's acting in Coal Miner's Daughter and I loved Whoopi Goldberg's performance in The Color Purple. Several years ago, I was browsing through titles in video rental store, and stumbled upon The Long Walk Home, and noticed that both Sissy and Whoopi were featured. Intrigued with the combination, I rented the video, and was MOVED by the story, and impressed with the work by Sissy and Whoopi. The story was very evenly presented...the characters' divergent points of view were fairly and accurately represented. That first rental resulted in a purchase, which I've watched periodically with great pleasure.
Rating: Summary: The Long Walk Home Review: I saw the movie The Long Walk Home in my Morality Class at school. I loved the movie. The film helped me see what it was like for the people who tried to live ordinary lives during the Montgomery Bus Boycott. It helped show how it effected their lives and how an ordinary person could help people realize that what they have been following is wrong and how they really believe the otherside. The movie also helped show how Blacks were treated back then and how racist people were during that time. The movie The long walk home showed how bad Black people lived compared to how the white people lived. In the film i think that the filmmakers did a good job when they showed what it was like during the time of the montgomery bus boycott. The movie The long walk home helped people realize how badly Black people and people who were not racist were treated and how they were an outcast to society.
Rating: Summary: A Truly Heartwarming Movie Review: I saw this movie in my morality class. I was not expecting such a gem. This movie made me realize the hardships that those African Americans living in the south had to go through. The movie made me realize that even one person who belives in their heart that something is wrong with their society can change it. This is an excellent movie and I encourage all to watch it. You will be hard pressed to find such a heartwarming, compassonate movie.
Rating: Summary: A Long Walk Home is wonderful Review: I thought that the Long Walk Home was a wonderful movie. I loved how they showed the things that were going on during that time in history. I also liked how they didn't base it entirely on the people of history that you knew but the people that you rarely heard about. It also showed how a young lady was not afraid of standing up for what she believed in and what she wanted to do. It showed how two totally different people were able to come together as one. It helped you realize that no one is truely different but all the same and when they put their differences aside anything can be done and any difference can be made. This is a wonderful film and it is a definite five.
Rating: Summary: An Amazing Journey Review: I thought The Long Walk Home was a captivating movie that captured the struggle that people faced during the civil rights movement. It is aimed at giving the viewer an in-depth look into the lives of everyday people who were in some way affected by the bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama. Oprah Winfrey plays Odessa, an African-American mother who works as a maid in a community divided by racist beliefs. With depth and poise, the actors bring alive the stories of families who were at the heart of segregation--some wanting to end it, and others fearing what would happen if it did end. Seen through the eyes of a young girl who grows up realizing that black or white, we're all human beings, the movie is a portrayal of a part of our American history that we must all be made aware of. I strongly recommend it for anyone who is looking for a good movie--and a good lesson!!
Rating: Summary: Great movie concerning black's struggle Review: I thought this movie was a great movie. It depicted the black struggle in the Montogomery Bus Boycott very well. It was very relasitic in showing the inequality that the black people faced in that time period and how many white people were so racist and unfair to them. It also shows how some white people were very helpful and supported the boycott (Miriam). I believe that this movie is a greta movie to make all ages aware of was really occured during the black rights movement. It teaches you alot about the different views of people and what it is like living as a black person and a white person during this era.
