Rating: Summary: A fine productiuon Review: Although I consider Gennie James as one of the most annoying child actors in the history of cinema (just listen to her wailing Southern twangs),I think this version of Burnett's book works beautifully. Now being taken forward to the days of WW1, we meet the grown-up Mary and she remembers back to when she first came to Mistlethwaite Manor after her parents died of the plague in India. Billie Whitelaw and Derek Jacobi add to the films dramatic power.
Rating: Summary: Another Gem from Halmark Review: This is one of my favorite movies ever. This version tells the classic story beautifully. It's great to watch the transition Mary goes through of being grouchy and snobbish to optimistic and strong-willed. You get to see a similar transition with a number of other characters as well. All the while Dicken remains ever friendly with a slight mysterious edge as a creature of nature. Additionally, the use of Chopan's Nocturne in the soundtrack makes the emotion in this movie all the more powerful. A caution though: the beginning might be too much for younger children. In India, Mary finds her parents and servant dead or dying and then her doll is taken away and burned in the fire. This is, however, the only part with such distresses.
Rating: Summary: Choose the 1993 version, good reason they remade this! Review: Mary Lenox is a troubled young child who looses her parents to an epidemic in India. Just as we become intrigued with the exotic landscape, we are transported to the English countryside where she goes to live with her rich uncle in a monstrosity of a castle. We are not sure why she does not seem to show sorrow for her parents death until this is revealed. During the day she finds happiness in trying to find a way into the secret garden. After meeting Dickon she finds a soul who loves gardening as much as she does. Dickon is a character who seems to know what will happen in the future and has a way with animals. He even claims to be able to talk to them. Soon, she finds happiness in trying to find a way into a secret garden she has heard about. In addition, she is on her way to making peace with herself and starts to think of helping others. There are many scenes which are just slightly scary and unexplained things happen. We suspect her sickly cousin Colin's mother may be helping Mary find her way to the garden. Only, she is a ghost! Mary is interested in finding the door to the secret garden and takes Dickon into her confidence. One night she hears someone crying and is driven to find out what is wrong. What she finds leads her to learning lessons about friendship. Keeping secrets, mischievous adventures and gardening become a part of her day. Mary learns that flowers are not the only things that can bloom with a bit of nurturing. The film begins and ends with a black cat, yet this cat is by no means unlucky. In one scene Mary says: "As long as my mind was filled with ugly thoughts, I didn't have room for a pretty one." She is the positive force in Colin's recovery and is rewarded for her efforts. The garden has both a tragic beginning and a happy ending. My niece Ashley helped me write my review and thought Dickon was rather cute. We both agreed, we want to see the 1993 version by Agnieszka Holland with Kate Maberly who I assume from the reviews of that particular version did an excellent job. The acting in this particular version was really inexcusably awful. I must be truthful, even my niece though so. We still were able to enjoy this movie but will soon be watching the 1993 version. There are still many lessons to learn from this version, if you can overlook the acting. The scary castle held my nieces attention and I loved the scenery.
Rating: Summary: This video stinxs! Review: I love the Secret Garden but this video just stinks it all up! The girl that played Mary was utterly annoying, the way she said, 'CurtainS and fountains of roses." was HORRIBLE! Notice how i say HORRIBLE! The boy that played Colin was also annoying, after someone says something he'l say, "I like that curtains and fountains of roses," and blah blah blah BLAH! Dickon was okay, he wasn't the greatest, and i didn't like how he could see the future, he was a STRANGE dickon. Doyour self a favor and DON'T REPEAT DON'T Buy this video.
Rating: Summary: Secret Garden - Hallmark Review: This has to be one of my all time favorite Hallmark movies. I have seen other movie versions of "The Secret Garden," all of which seem much darker. I have to say, Hallmark has made the most enjoyable version of "The Secret Garden" to date. the childeren in this movie are wonderful. Child characters: "Mary Lennox," spoiled, lonley, sad child. Taken from her home to live with a guardian in England after her parents death. "Dickon", Mesterious boy who communes with nature. "Colin," son of Mary's guardian, is hidden from society. In the movie Mray sets out to find and unlock the secrets to the mesterious garden, making friends along the way. The scenery in this movie is breath taking at times. One of Hallmarks best! A must have for any Hallmark Hall of Fame fan. Good to have in any movie collection!
Rating: Summary: On my Top Ten List Review: This film is on my top ten Favorite-Movies-Ever list. I have seen this movie almost a hundred times. NO KIDDING! My family used to tease me when I was younger because I looked and acted just like Gennie James in her portrayel of "Mary"(stubby nose and all). The storyline is wonderful. Small changes from the book only added to the mystery of the story, leading to the heartwarming ending. The ending, which is not part of the book, gets two thumbs up. I always imagined a better ending to the story and this was it. Though, I have always secretly wished Mary had wed Dickin, Colin grows up to be a hotty. The casting was perfect. I couldn't have casted it better myself. I have read the book and these actors fit the description I pictured in my head as I was reading it to a "T". Gennie James is definitely the brattiest of them all. And last but not least, the music of Chopin gave so much feeling to the theme. It was slow and moving. The kind of melody that gets suck in your head and you can't stop wanting to hear it again. In fact, if anyone knows the name of it please email me: Aurora9725@aol.com. Obviously, I love this movie. But it is just my opinion. See it for yourself to believe.
Rating: Summary: did the writer even read the book Review: I don't know who wrote this movie but it has nothing to do with the book. Only in the beginning did it even resemble the orginal story. but after that it went down hill. they changed everything. First by making Mary and Colin not cousins was wrong and then at the end to add things to it that weren't in the book. First of all the story ended after Mr. craven discovered his son could walk and the garden was reopened but in this movie they had to add what they thought would happen when they children grew up. If you are going to that at least it should have been Mary engaged to Dickon instead of Colin. especially since they were cousins and it seemed like Mary had a little crush on Dickon. so my advise is if you want a copy of this movie check out the other ones or do not read the book.
Rating: Summary: Not as Good as Another One Review: I would like all of The Secret Garden movies but I like the one with Maggie Smith in it better. This one is a little boring and harder to understand than the one with Maggie Smith in it.
Rating: Summary: what movie where you watching? Review: The setting was brilliant and the children were NOT that bad. Michael Horndern as Ben Weatherstaff was wonderful! Have you ever seen his King Lear? And the Chopin muisical score was great! Lighten up, relax, take a deep breath and just enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Secret Garden Review: I first heard this story when I was in grade school. It was wonderful then and almost 40 yrs. later it is still a wonderful story.
