Summary: Do NOT buy the audio cassette
Review: Fine story. Great reader (Claire Bloom). However the quality of the audio is INEXCUSABLY bad! Was the audio engineer asleep?
This was my fist venture to buy a non BBC tape. I regret it!

I highly recommend always buying BBC books on tape -- it is guaranteed QUALITY.

Summary: depends on the version you saw first
Review: This is my absolute favorite version of The Secret Garden. It is probably because it is the first one that I saw. Now I compare all the other version to this one. It is most enjoyable. Mary is not annoying, she is just played differently than in the other pictures. It is a wonderful movie, Hallmark did a great job.

Summary: good, but...
Review: this movie is okay.I think its nice, but i think ill stick with the 1993 version with kate maberly . The girl who played MARY LENNOX was annoying.COLIN was horrible ! And so was DICKON. The story is all messed up. COLIN and MARY were supposed to be cousins, they were not supposed to be married at the end , and DICKON ...it was horrible that he had to be dead. What most annoyed me,was the girl who played MARY.She was terrible. The story, i would give it a 4 ,the actors (wich i didnt like)i would give them no stars if possible.

Summary: The best Secret Garden!
Review: This is the only presentation of the Secret Garden that my wife will watch! We have watched all of the others and none are close to this one. The actress who plays the Mary Lenox is simply the best as she turns from vixen to princess.

Summary: Garden therapy revives children in England.
Review: Mary Lennox is a pitiful, spoiled little girl whose parents die in an earthquake, and she is sent to her maternal uncle- by marriage to live on his melancholy estate in England. Anger drives Mary, not just because she has lost her parents and her the life she knows, but also because her parents paid no attention to the little girl who was being raised by servants. When Mary arrives at her uncle's home, she finds more of the same, except that the servants expect her to be more independent. Spoiled, Mary is angry by the loss of control of her world. One day, while exploring the vast grounds of the estate, Mary discovers there is a secret garden with no known key to the door. Mary becomes determined to find a way inside the garden, and when she does she transforms herself and all around her. A lovely story for children and adults.

Summary: Childhood favorite
Review: As the first film version of "The Secret Garden" that I was ever exposed to, this movie holds a place in my heart. Maybe that's why I rank it above other versions, but, honestly, I've found the other ones disappointing. When my copy was inadvertantly destroyed years ago, I had hoped the new (1993) version would be a sufficient replacement, but I was dead wrong. This 1987 version may not have the most talented of a cast, but they make for a more enjoyable time for the children watching.

Summary: Two thumbs down, WAY down
Review: This film did nothing but annoy me. It only moved me in the sense that it made me mad. This book was read to me at the age of 7 and was the book that made me fall in love with literature. I own several copies, anniversary editions, blah blah blah. I'm telling you that this film is not true to the intent of the book. What is up with the weird Dickon in this film? I really didn't appreciate this version killing him off in the war and I don't care if I passed on a surprising tidbit because this is NOT in the book. Dickon is magical enough without adding the weird stuff this film does. The Kate Maberly version captures the essence of the book best. The film moves from dark images void of life and spirit to colorful imagery of spring, new life, and newfound joy. Your emotions move with the film and the images follow the transformation of the central characters as they find hope and love. This version lacks the artistry and emotion of the book. Stick with Kate Maberly. The only changes made are at the beginning to save time.

Summary: my favorite version
Review: this was the first version of the secret garden that i saw, and personally, it's my favorite. the children really weren't as bad as most people claim, i'm sure if you're actually british, the accents probably won't sound perfect, but come on people. the girl in this version (as opposed to the wb one), i think did a much better job of being a snobby, obnoxious little brat. the boy playing colin was very irritating and whiney through most of the movie. that's the whole point. they're not supposed to be cute lovable little kids, they're terrors who gradually change through the movie. you're not meant to start out liking or pitying them. Barret Oliver (dickon) is one of my favorite actors(also bastien in neverending story), and the other versions just aren't the same without him. also, derek jacobi is excellent as the recluse father.

Review: I know that some people read these reviews, but decide to find things out for themselves. Trust me. DO NOT buy this movie. It is terrible. This is truthfully the worst movie I have ever seen. The acting is dreadful and the changes made to the plot completely destroy the original meaning of the film. If you are looking for something similar to the book, try the Kate Maberly version. That one is, in my opinion, by far the best. Please, don't waste your money on such a pitiful excuse for a movie.

Summary: The Secret Garden
Review: The Secret Garden By:Frances Hodgson Burnett The Secret Garden starts out in Misselwaite Manor. The main character is a girl named MAry Lennox who is a orphan that nobody likes because she is stubborn, very mean, and ugly. She has no respect for anyone. She lives with her Ayah that feeds and clothes her. Later on in the book when her Ayah dies of sickness. Mary gets put into a orphange. A little boy, Basil, that lives in the orphanage makes fun of her name and gives her the nickname Mistress Mary, Quite Contrary. Then she goes and lives with her uncle. I think this book is okay, but it kind of drags along. I give it three stars.
