Summary: Suprisingly Good.
Review: Wow! I was totally blown away with The Hurricane because I was hardly expecting much of a movie. I didn't even want to see this but I was bored one day so I decided to go. It is now on my top 30 movies! Denzel Washington and Vicellous Reon Shannon are amazing actors, and both deserve to at least be nominated for Academy Awards.

Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter (Washington) is an excellent boxer, never lost a match. He is loved by many, but when he is accused of a crime he didn't commit, he gets put in prison for life sentence. Meet Luei (Shannon) a 11 year old boy who one day picks up Carter's book. He is intrigued and desperate to brake Carter out of prison. That is where it all begins, the fight to get out, the friendship to die for and the love to cry for. Unmissable.

Summary: If I could give it 10 stars, I would
Review: A brilliant, unforgettable, gripping account of boxer Rubin Carter's innocent inprisonment in the 1960s. I saw this movie in January, and since then I've seen it four extra times. Washington, my favorite actor of all time, delivers a performance so remarkably touching and effective, I cannot believe he lost the Oscar. This man's performance grabbed every emotion I've had. It made me bawl my eyes out but feel hopeful. I can say, without effort, this was the best performance I have ever seen in my life. And Viscellous Reon Shannon, playing Lesra, the young man who is inspired by Mr. Carter's book, "The Sixteenth Round", and fights his way to get him out of prison. Rubin Carter, as you probably know, was jailed with Mr. John Artis in the sixties, after being wrongfully convicted of murder. Twenty agonizing years later, Rubin Carter was freed from a New Jersey prison. This movie is inspiring and splendidly written. Norman Jewison created, along with an outstanding cast, what I would call the best movie I have seen in about 2 years. While not every fact was exact, I would go with the argument, "if you want to see the full story, read the book". This was a movie, therefore, not every fact could be portrayed. I still loved it, and I cant wait till it comes out on video. Bob Dylan's beautiful song "The Hurricane" was made in a fight for Rubin Carter's freedom in 1973. I hope you love this movie as much as I did. I will always remember it.

Summary: One Of The Best Movies I Have Ever Saw !
Review: it's One Of The Best Movies I Have Ever Saw ! great .. not words ... to good to be true ... no words can discribe this kind of movie ...

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Overly long and inaccurate, liberal paranoia.
Review: If this movie was presented as a work of fiction, it might warrant a higher rating. Do not misunderstand. Denzel Washington is a master of his craft. The supporting cast does a fine job. But the plot is too incredible to be believed by any rational person.

This is, essentially, a work of fiction with _composite_ characters (particularly in the case of the bad cops) who say and do things on the screen that they never did in real life. As we know all too well, a botched prosecution does _not_ mean innocence, in fact. I am hoping that we are not favored with, _The Juice_, anytime soon.

Almost unbearably long and preachy, this movie will be enjoyed and no doubt cited by supporters of the convicted cop-killer, Abu Mumia Jamal. Watching it, I had the uneasy feeling that there is some sort linkage being attempted between the two cases.

It came as no surprise that this depiction of the criminal justice system as an "establishment conspiracy" was directed by Norman Jewison, who also brought us the implausible and overblown _And Justice For All_.

Contrived and unconvincing, I walked away feeling that, "The Hurricane," should be back behind bars. Simply awful.

Summary: Far from perfect
Review: The Hurricane is a gripping cinematic experience and not a historic biopic that uses all of its resources to research and accurately present an event or topic (as a point of fact, films that do the latter are usually devoid of any real substance - Titanic (obviously not true) is an example of a film that worries more about meticulously recreating a historic event but can't tell a story to save its life).

That being said, there are many things about the film that just plain don't work. The villainous police lieutenant was an irritatingly shallow character and as a rule, I typically despise films that have villains who perpetrate evil acts for reasons that do not benefit themselves. But, I don't view the Hurricane as a film that is just about overcoming wrong done against Carter by outside forces. It is more about the war that wages within and this perfectly displayed in Washington's emotionally bruising performance. The three Canadian figures were equally shallow except benevolent and I was also concerned with how the story completely dropped the young man convicted with Carter except for one minute later in the film.

With all these complaints, I can barely explain why I found The Hurricane so effective and moving. The best I can offer is how the film (rather didactically at times) dealt with two contrasting emotions: the rage and hatred that had consumed Carter's life and the simple joy that came from having one single person who offered his belief. The complete scene of Lesra's first visit (from the visitor's lining up, the prisoners being strip searched to the visitors leaving) was the best of the film.

Whatever made The Hurricane effective to me, it certainly was not the idea that it was a true story. But I would like to address the issues that were brought up in earlier reviews. The fact that Rubin Carter was not that great a boxer was something I suspiciously felt upon first viewing the trailer (since I never heard of him) so I never offered one iota of belief to that notion. As to whether or not Carter is a "good" person, I don't know where to begin. Being court martialed is in no way a measure of this, especially a black soldier in those days. Jackie Robinson was court martialed as was my grandfather and half his unit. They routinely held black soldiers up to stricter codes of behavior for whatever reason. Failing a lie detector test means nothing for one important legal reasons. Someone can't be forced to take one, meaning that we know if someone takes a polygraph, they must have volunteered. This is why it is not admissible evidence. I personally believe these things would not have added to the story if they were in the film. I am suspicious that they were not put in the film in order to paint a better picture of Carter but there's no way to prove that Jewison didn't just omit them because he felt, as I do, its irrelevant. After all, the script never blatantly lies on any of these issues.

Summary: Denzel at his best
Review: You already know the drill, Denzel plays Mr Hurricane who was wrongfully convicted of murder.

The film traces Rubin's experiences through prison, his many appeals and his relationship with "the Canadians" who helped him so.

Denzel's portrayal is beyond reproach, he turns in a stunning performance and I am dissapointed that he did not win the Acadamy Award for this. No offence to Kevin Spacey who was also brilliant in American Beauty, I just think Denzel turned in a powerhouse performance that moves the audience and deserved more.

In some ways, if you have seen Malcolm X, the prison scenes and Rubin's growth in prison will remind you of the same character growth Malcolm went through under similar circumstances.

I was a little dissapointed that more of the trial was not explored. For any who want to know more about this, I recommend you get a copy of "Hurricane" and read in much more detail how sickening his setup was and give yourself a better insight into not only Rubin, but the Canadians and Lesra.

All in all though, this was a fantastic film that I am sure you will enjoy thouroughly. Can't wait for the DVD version, I already have a spot reserved !

Summary: This is a great movie!
Review: This is by far one of the best films ever made.

It's about a boy who is brought up in a racist environment and when he is 11 years old, stabs someone important to the community. He is sentenced to jail for 10 years. After he comes out of jail, he becomes a champion boxer. After a night at a club/pub, he is sentenced to life-time jail for murders he did not commet. During this time, a boy finds the life of him very interesting and writes to him. They keep writing to each other and they meet up often. It become a duty to get the innocent guy out of jail. After 20 years of being in jail, he finally realeased.

This is a great movie. Dienzil Wasington is a very, very good actor. Well Done!

Summary: AWESOME!
Review: I thought The Hurricane was the best movie I have seen in the longest time. Washington brought the story of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter to life. I think Washington, is well over due for a Oscar.
